Pacific Star: Dad’s Daily Red

Dad's daily red

The Harvest Market in Fort Bragg never disappoints. French Husband, Chelsea and I gathered grocerys for our sejour at Westport. In our grocery cart, stuffed between breakfast, lunch and dinner for the next three days were a few bottles of wine. One of them bought because the label was intriguing: "Dad's Daily Red".

Westport

My heartstrings were playing as I cooked our dinner to the sound of the waves crashing. French Husband poured a glass of wine that Julie and Bill (the owners of Westport House) had set aside for us. We noticed that the bottle of wine was from the same winery as Dad's Daily Red, and that the winery was a mere stone throw away. We decide to go visit the next day.

Sally, the owner of Pacific Star greeted us as if we were old friends. Dad's Daily Red is named after her Father. We raised our glasses in honor of him. My eyes glistened as Sally talked about her dad… The thought of her father, my father, Westport, serendipity, life…  a rich harvest.

We drank on the edge of the cliff near Westport and as the sun starting to disappear Sally invited us to come over tomorrow… to help with wine making.

  1. Corey, this trip has just been magical. What a treat it is to check your blog every morning and read about another serendipitous event. People are so attracted to you because of your joie de vivre!!

  2. This trip will give you memories to last a lifetime. Thanks for taking us along. I can almost hear the waves crashing, half a continent away.

I think I’ve driven by that winery a few times. Is it on the slopes above the ocean, just south of West Port? I’m jealous….I haven’t been over to Ft. Bragg in a couple years. Enjoy!

  4. Your ocean scenes of Westport remind me so strongly of the coastline around Cape Town, on the tip of Africa (same climate as California and same combination of oceans, mountains and vineyards). No wonder this place has a special hold on your heart.

  5. Isn’t it wondrous how some of these moments just seem to pop up in life? Gracious folks and unexpected moments that thread us all together. I know that should Dad’s Daily Red ever cross my starry path, I will pluck it up like the grapes you will soon be making into wine, and I’ll tip a toast to you – and my dad.

  6. That was a lovely way to remember both of them. I’m sure they smiled as you lifted your glasses.

Cheers ! Bon sante ! JX

  8. Happy Wine Making……Happy Family, you are so blessed.

  9. My sweet Father took us on a wine tasting tour near his home, somewhere you would never think there would be wine made. It was the best time and we brought home a box of wine!
    Love all your California stories……

  10. How special to honor your Dad’s by sharing wine together on the cliffs above the ocean. You are indeed having a wonderful trip with special memories created all along the way.

  11. Karen, I bet I’d enjoy South Africa’s coastal scenery too! Corey’s oceanside photos also remind me of the Azores. In fact, before my first trip to the Azores, Farmboy Husband was looking at some of the glossy travel brochures I’d received, and commented on how much the northern California coastline must have reminded the Azorean immigrants of home.
Re “Dad’s Daily Red”: My father was a teetotaler, and so am I, so I’d need to toast him with some fruit juice. All that really matters is wanting to salute him, of course, not the beverage.

  12. My favorite place to be…Fort Bragg/Mendocino area! So peaceful…

  13. That is a beautiful part of California. I am from Northern California, but now live in the Los Angeles area. What a treat to be able to go back to your childhood memories! Enjoy the rest of your trip and thanks for taking us along! 🙂

  15. oh my, this has been a fabulous journey. I keep contrasting your life in France, your life on the motorcycle in Europe, Your life these past weeks, California…..aren’t we blessed? I am a 15 year ovarian cancer survivor and life is to be celebrated and enjoyed. My husband and I now have 5 grandkids and travel constantly, too.

  16. I love this. My dad drink a glass of red daily–“for medicinal purposes.”
    😉

  17. You are a blessed woman Corey! Kimberly

Does helping with wine making involve stomping on the grapes to add a hint of French accent? Vivre California wines…loved worldwide even my many a Frechman.
