Halloween Costumes from the Past

Happy Halloween!

Chelsea and Sacha were little the last time we spent Halloween in the States.

This is me when I was two. My Mother loved to make Halloween costumes. I am so glad she put an undershirt underneath my bikini top.

Here I am a year later: Trick or Treat! I am dressed as an Indian maiden. My mother made my costume from a burlap sack. I grew up on a farm (see the cows in the background,)  feed sacks made great Halloween costumes.

Note my little hand sticking out, I am not posing. I remember this moment like yesterday… That costume itched! I stuck out my arm because my Mother told me not to scratch, but that costume was rough! Dig the moccasins?

This is me at three years of age, the last Halloween photo of me and my Mother's Homemade Halloween costumes… I bet you thought you were going to see me in costumes from the age of two to fifty some...sorry ghouls. Though  I wish I had a photo of when I was dressed as a lady bug at twenty-eight. Or a photo of myself dressed like a mermaid and out of gas on the freeway at midnight, or the time my Mother dressed me up as Marilyn Monroe when I was around five years old.

My Mother made matching Mr. and Mrs. Ghost costumes for me and my brother. My brother (Marty commentor name: Orama) is younger than me, my Mother wanted me to dress as the Mr. Ghost since I was taller. I threw a fit and refused to be the guy at Halloween.  My Mother was disappointed but agreed.

I love the eyebrows, don't you?

Halloween tonight! Chelsea is in New York (She will be a leopard.), Sacha is going as a pink pig, his cousin is going as a big fluffy bunny, his other cousin is going as a butcher, French Husband is wondering what this is all about.

What will you do this evening?

Thank you for this wonderful Halloween morning gift – you are simply adorable in these costume blasts from the past! Reading about the bikini top (who’d have thunk!) made me laugh out loud: I had been so distracted by guess what the necklace was made out of (dried fruit and peanuts in the shell?), that I had not even noticed your were wearing a top! The big brown bag, so stylish (“Early Bloomingdale’s”?), you are wearing them so gracefully, Grace Kelly would have been proud of your sense of style (same in the Pocahontas costume – are you still carrying your handbags like that?).
The ghost! So much better than what I sewed for my kids (their costumes looked more like they were stolen from the K.., what with the hoods I put over their heads)! How could you breathe? The little breadbasket on top is adorable, can’t figure out the alien “receiver” sticking out of it. Must be a California thing! 😉
Rumors are that little ghouls and witches may show up at my door tonight. I’ll have to go to the gas station for some candy (I hear the little Hallo-Wieners are setting their bets on us, American roots and such). Meanwhile, I am enjoying the gift of time, that extra hour we got back at 2am is just what I need to finally feel in sync with time again!
Happy Halloween to all of you and everywhere,
    hugs,
    Merisi

  2. Wonderful, wonderful photographs! I totally agree with Merisi that you looked too adorable, and yes, how on earth did you breathe in the ghost outfit? Come over and see how little English cherubs prepare for Halloween!

  3. Have a bootiful and spooktakular Halloween
    Love you

Loved the photos! Wish my mom had taken pics of us way back when….and I do mean way back!! We were usually ghosts, witches, cowgirls or bums ~ easy to make costumes. And we used old pillowcases for the treats. My mom couldn’t sew, so we had to create costumes that didn’t require much extra work. Since no grandkids….yet…I especially love the little ones that come to the door. They are so excited and just darling in their little outfits ~ just like YOU! Annual block party on our cul-de-sac tonight, which makes for good fun. Don’t have to answer the doorbell ~ kids just come up to the party and get their treats.
And what is Chelsea doing in New York?? You slipped that in quietly 😉

Love, love, love your outfits! What a slice! You don’t see costumes like that anymore. Darling little pose you have as an indian. Glad you explained the hula girl’s bra. That is so cute! It makes me laugh. Love the ghost hat, too.
No halloween hijinx for me tonight. I’m in the middle of nowhere (Agua Dulce). No parties or trick-or-treaters here.

  6. A slice of the past and so delightful. I love these type of homemade costumes. I was a witch, or course, and a cowgirl, a refrigerator (don’t ask) and once, my best friend and I went as Texaco Gas Pumps. I don’t remember which one was regular and which one was super, and, oh, yea, we were freshmen in college.
Trickers and treaters don’t come to our door here, as we are too far off of the road and they can get much more candy in a more conventional neighborhood, so, we are off to my sister’s house, which is converted into a haunted house (and I mean the inside). I hope I’m not too scared. Boo!

My sister and I never had children, so when our baby brother had a son, my sister was very excited to be part of that poor child’s Halloween! She would dress him up as funny clowns, take tons of photos of him and then just laugh her butt off. She was evil but in a loving way. I just watched this ritual and I guess it was her way of mothering him as an Aunt.
I love your photos of you as a child, how precious. Be glad you didn’t have my sister as an Aunt…tee hee

  8. Love those costumes – I was Pocahantas in 1964 and it was a fvaourite! My favourite part of Hallowe’en is about 4:00 when you know the anticipation is getting sky high; it truly is the witching hour when the children begin to change.
But I also love the kids coming to the door, their excited happy chatter, and the sound of them calling to each other throughout the neighborhood – it’s such fun!

  9. Happy Halloween!

Wait a minute! When did Chelsea go to New York? Did you mention that in an earlier blog post, but I just missed it? Isn’t she enrolled in classes at SFSU? Maybe Chelsea can guest-blog her NYC sojourn for us, since we know she’s inherited her mom’s photography gift.

thanx for the treats. you were a darling kid. Bestest,Denise Happy Halloween to all of you. FH must think we are wierd, maybe, but we have a good time.

  12. well as for me i’m hoping no kids come up to our door since we haven’t got any treats for them. and i don’t like to disappoint. though it’s really rare here in Southern France. as you know here we are passing a quiet Toussaint, All Saints’ Day, thinking about our passed away friends and relatives. with the customary chrysanthemums.

You were adorable in your homemade costumes!!! My grandmother made me a witches costume one time when I was at her house on Halloween. I didn’t bring anything to go trick-or-treating in so she had some black material and sewed up a skirt and cape and my aunt had a witches hat from a party and I looked great!!! Thanks for reminding me of that…I had 3 trick/treaters…a princess, a cowboy and a black cat with pink fur trim and pink ears…all about 4-5 yrs old….SO CUTE.

You are so cute in these costumes. Tonight I will have a new costume that I won’t leave : A costume of mother

  15. Ever cute!

  16. Love the old photos and great costumes!

  17. Great Halloween memories! Thanks for sharing. Tonight I took my two exchange students from Taiwan trick-or-treating. They had never been before and had a fabulous time. One dressed as Death, complete with the sithe, and the other was a ninja. They made a haul, but unlike our American children, weren’t very interested in the candy bucket at the end of the night. What fun children are!

  18. Wonderful photos :}

  19. Shelley Noble

Oh goodness! How adorable you and your costumes were. The unpictured stories sound just as delightful!

  20. Hand out candy and greet all the kids we do and don’t know. I was running late today so didn’t dress up but wore fairy wings on top of my headband and painted my face. A quick butterfly but everyone “got” it!

  21. Aww…these pics are priceless.
