Snow in Provence

Fountain under snow

Images and text by: Corey Amaro

Yesterday it snowed.

Like dusting sugar powder on a cake.

Fountain in courtyard

As the minutes passed, the dusting gave way to icing.

Snow in provence

Snow in Provence is like having your cake and eating it too.

It only lasts a day or two.

Sweet but no snowman.

Garden chair in the snow

Watching the snow fall on the garden chair was like watching the hand of an artist painting.

Adding just the right amount of color, capturing the light, steady strokes…

Courtyard, snow

Our courtyard became a winter wonderland, if only for a day.

  1. Snow, snow all around,
    Gently covering the ground!
If you go to http://www.piip.org you can see our front yard.
    Love your photos, Corey.

  2. love your photos … thanks to your photos I may like snow

  3. I don’t live very far away from you but we had no snow yesterday ๐Ÿ™ only hail. and now it’s raining… I love your photos, lucky you could capture the so fleeting moment of beaty!

  4. Snow here, too (and it will stay until late April). Quite cold today, -20 C. People still skiing and ski jumping, FIS World Cup/ Nordic Opening going on. Hubby went to watch the competition on the spot, I prefer staying inside.

  5. I live in a winter wonderland! Your courtyard looks stunning, Corey. I especially love the photo of the chair. After all, God IS the original Master Painter!
    Happy Sunday!

  6. It snowed here in the Lot as well. And some lingers on the grass and on the terrace today.

  7. Is it the snow, your talent as a photographer or the “French-ness” of it all that makes these scenes so lovely? Maybe it’s just your romantic heart.
Whichever it is, thank you for sharing the photos.
You can keep the snow, though! LOL

  8. it must be just beautiful. silent.
where I live? yesterday it was hot and humid, today it rains and the mist rolls in..

  9. Lovely courtyard, beautiful photographs. It is 5:00 a.m. and snowing softly. Perfect for cross country sking right from the terrace and across our fields.

  10. So beautiful.. the snow and your shots
Being on the other side the world the weather is very different.. 30c last week and sunny… but only 20c and raining this week… variety!!! One day I’d love to see a White Christmas… it’s on my bucket list..
Have a great day… ciao Julie

  11. Here in my part of Pennsylvania, we have had murky skies, around 25F at night and in the 40s for the day. Snow on Thanksgiving but today is just dawning and i see blue skies already.
Which is good…i need the sun to shine on this first day of Advent!
Your pictures are amazing. i love snow and hope we, too, are graced with it.

  12. No snow, but cold temperatures. We have pretty blue skies today.

  13. It is cold but no snow here in Ohio….your courtyard is wonderful!!! I love to watch the snow…it is beautiful.

  14. Florence: windy and rainy. It’s about two months that is raining.
    Marigio Lol.

  15. Right now is raining, and is about 6C.
I hope we will have snow on Christmas Holiday.
Love the photos, and your courtyard is a very nice place to stay, eat, read ….when is warm outside:)

  16. Love the courtyard, love the piip frontyard too! We have no snow here in southern Massachusetts yet. I love the first snowfall of the year, still waiting.

  17. I l0ve your Garden. I would be sitting out there every day in summer if I had such a beautiful space. It is the same here in Georgia when it snows. It is gone before you can put your mittens on. Have a fantastic Sunday!

  18. Here in North Carolina, it’s 32F, the freezing mark, but sunny and ckear. It’s been a mild autumn for the most part. We’re wondering what kind of winter though!

  19. What a peaceful way to begin my day! Thank you so much. I love to watch it snow, the calm and quiet is so wonderful.
I am also in Ohio (Northeast) and it is cold, but sunny. All I want for Christmas this year is for it to snow the week that my great nephews and great niece are here from Florida. They have never seen snow and I want them to be able to play it in, make snow angels and experience the beauty.

  20. No snow but it’s cold here in Western NC. My cats are curled up by the woodstove and I’m getting ready to go make another cappuccino…

  21. I’m an American who lives in Zurich; it’s cloudy today with a bit of snow on the ground (an inch, perhaps?) The temps are a bit chilly, but not terribly cold.
I only found your blog recently, and am enjoying it very much. Your photos are beautiful.

  22. Absolutely freezing here, usually 10 degrees colder than you – I monitor it daily with envy !! Too cold for snow yet I think although the north of the country has lots. I bought the last sledge in the town for Grace but as yet it remains in waiting. Very pretty pics Coco, my luv, Jx

  23. It is 77 degrees, bright, blue skies and white, fluffy clouds. Not a chance of snow, so thanks for sharing yours.

  24. I think these are the first pics I’ve seen of your courtyard…which is so charming! Soft rain last night here in So. California and cold {well, when it gets down to 38 degrees at night…that’s cold for us}. I filled my front porch yesterday with poinsettas for the holidays. Do you have those in France during the holidays or is there another flower in abundance?

  25. beautiful photos! It’s time for me to start missing winter again ((
It’s around +21 here in Hong Kong, pleasant enough … but I need my four seasons.

  26. I love your courtyard! And it looks absolutely magical in the snow!

  27. We have a wet deck here in the Pacific NW – but 6″ of snow just melted away! Yes, we had a white Thanksgiving which was a first ever for us. Dreamy courtyard, Corey, – doesn’t snow just give everything a blanket of loveliness (until one has to travel!)

  28. We have about 5cm of snow on the ground. The high today will be -7 with a chance of snow.
I didn’t need the weatherman to tell me it would snow today. Every Canadian knows that on Grey Cup day, it will snow. What is Grey Cup, you ask. It is the equivalent of the Superbowl and it is being played in my hometown this year. Lots of excitement here the last few days. At the beginning of the week, we had lows of -27 and highs of -19, then bam!, the next day we had a high of +5. Crazy weather.

  29. Today it is sunny and bright and no snow.
    Love you
    Big Hugs
    Love Jeanne

  30. Awwww, the French even do snowfall beautifully. Here in Southern Ontario, Canada, we enjoy a mixed bag in the winter months. Currently we have snow and I’m watching the swans on the river convincingly ignore it as they follow the current to who knows where.

  31. Last week, it was -25 but it’s now a balmy -14 with about a foot of snow on the ground.

  32. Sipping coffee and dreaming of your part of the world. Today in San Francisco..cool, clear and bright.

  33. Your garden looks lovely with its dusting of snow.
Hoped to go to our cabin in the mountains, but neighbor warned us to stay home, 4ft of snow, no snow plows, and no power. (Power finally came on after 6 days and 13 hours.)
Feeling kind of cosy here. Forty three degrees in Sacramento this morning. Rain on and off. I wanted to go ice skating on the outdoor rink, but I’ll wait until the skies clear up.

  34. Just a dusting of snow around Pittsburgh, PA., yesterday AM too, but no big deal here this time of year.
However, having grown up snowless in the SF Bay Area, I find snow highly overrated. Every autumn I dread our impending long, cold, snowy northeastern winter more and more because the older we get, the harder winter is to cope with.
Would love to move back to the mild, snowfree Bay Area.

  35. Wow! I wish it would snow in Willows! It’s so pretty! It is blue skies with white clouds but it’s freezing.

  36. Soooo beautiful, Corey! I Love how the fountain looks with the gentle dusting of snow. Holiday love to you and Yann…

  37. This is so beautiful. Here in the South island of New Zealand we are expecting 28C (83F) and it will be humid. It’s nice that summer is starting but snow is my favorite of all weathers.

  38. Here in Saskatchewan (Canada) we’ve just come through a week of 25F-below but now it’s warmed up to about 5F-below. And we have at least a foot of snow.
Around the province there has already been some tragic loss of life due to the danger of icy roads, and fog and snow resulting in poor visibility. It is very sad and it happens every winter.

  39. Out my window – dark grey sea with white caps, clear, clear sky with wispy white clouds, on the coast near SF.
    Stunning photos of your courtyard!

  40. ChicagoSheila

Bright, sunny, but COLD (41F)in Chicago today!! At least it isn’t snowing…yet.

  41. Here in Eastern Washington we are having freezing fog, 15 inches of snow on the ground with more to come. It was pretty a week ago, but now we are getting cabin fever.;) Thankfully the twinkle lights are up and on, making me happy. Have a wonderful week, Corey.

  42. We must have sent you our snow, it looks just as pretty in your backyard as it did in mine. It’s pretty mild here today.

  43. It’s a beautiful sunny day here in San Francisco Bay Area!
    Your photos are amazing Corey!

  44. Corey, love your picture postcard photos! Those irons chairs are calling my name. ๐Ÿ˜‰
The weather channel says we’re having mostly cloudy day, 72 degrees. But as I’m writing this enjoying my cup of java, the sun is peeking out…you never know how it will be on the island!

  45. C, your pics are incredible! dreamlike . . .I would love to learn more about how you taught yourself to take such awesome shots.
It’s 50 and sunny here in the MD/DC area, with many many cars topped with trees that will soon be adorned.

  46. Your garden looks like it would be magical in any weather! We had snow yesterday as well, it didn’t stick, but things felt quite blizzard-y and winterish for a while there. And now it’s just coooooold! I think making hot chocolate is my next activity ๐Ÿ™‚

  47. Snow for a day or two is always so beautiful!
It does make my heart sing and your courtyard is gorgeous.
Here it is gray skies with the threat of rain. By far not as pretty as a light dusting of snow.

  48. Overcast and about 40 degrees here in Minnesota. Not one of our prettiest days, but as a recently transplanted Iowan, I am learning to enjoy the beauty of snow. (actually not all that different from Iowa’s weather!) Fortunately, we have many of those soft, magical snowfalls in the course of the season, so that keeps us going. Lovely photos, Corey…and as usual, lovely words to accompany them.

  49. Brenda L from TN

It’s in the mid 40’s here today in Chattanooga, Tennessee…first really cold day we’ve had this winter. Was in the mid 60’s the last 2 weeks…which was unusual…Should have been in the 50’s.
I didn’t know you had a courtyard…it’s so pretty with the snow dust.

  50. What lovely snow! When did you add the upper metal trellis?
It is in the low 50’s and sunny with blue skys. We will get snow once or twice this winter- also for two days and then gone. hugs, E

  51. Yuba City is Chilly. Your courtyard is so beautiful. Wish i were there.

  52. Such pretty pictures! My weather today was sunny with warm southerly breezes. I hear we may have flurries by the end of the week. I can’t wait…I love the snow! My daughter in Le Panier~Marseille did not receive your beautiful snowfall…only hail.

  53. It is a beautiful sunny day here in Coronado, California, but a bit windy & chilly.
Your snowy day photos make me want to hop on a plane to France!

  54. Sue Morris

Hot and uncomfortable here……28degsC at the moment and climbing.
Your snow pictures are really lovely – so peaceful and calming.
    Hugs Sue/West.Australia.

  55. It’s hot and sunny in Melbourne Australia. Even having moved here over 20 years ago from Scotland it still seems strange that we are in summertime at this time of the year. Also strange that Santa is seen in the streets, with full red costume on including the black heavy boots and it’s 99 degrees!

  56. I want to sit in that snow-dusted white iron chair all wrapped up in wool and drink a cup of French hot chocolate with you!
Our massive snow of last week and ice storm of this week have been melting today. I hope some snow stays…it makes it easier to practice those Christmas carols on the harp!

  57. How lovely it is. Thank you for sharing pictures of it with us.
The weather here in Virginia is chilly and I have heard that we could face another large snowfall this year. My hands got real cold while I was putting greenery on my fence this afternoon especially after the sun started going down.

  58. Beautiful fleeting winter wonderland! I must be in Provence for Xmas or New Year one year. Yesterday in Malta, I was in flip-flops and sleeveless T in the garden! So hot I had to move from the sun. My son is sad we don’t get snow, ever. But off to the UK to visit family for Xmas so perhaps he’ll build that snowman once in his childhood!

  59. Your photos are lovely! We had snow squalls over the weekend but today it is cold and sunny. The ground is just beginning to freeze over. I still have so much outdoor work to do, but with holiday artisan shows there is hardly time to ready the house for Christmas let alone worry about the outdoors. How did I find you? I think I found your blog by searching for French antiques online…fancy that…I love flea markets and antique shops just as much as you do! I believe it was old hemp linens I was searching for at the time.

  60. Stephanie M

Love the canopy over your garden. Lovely setting especially with a dusting of snow. enjoy…..

  61. Amazing, we look for snowflakes on the very cold days and nights but nah, just not gonna happen. In the Southwest it just got cool…it was a lingering summer this year.
We’ll take the 40 degree nights and 60 – 70 degree days for now.

  62. Victoria Ramos

Corey: I L-O-V-E these photos!!! They are so special! It is sunny and cold here is Sacramento…leaves are falling everywhere…snow in the Sierras…

  63. Well now, unlike most of you I am down-under in NZ so today it has been beautifully fine and sunny with a temp of around 24 degrees C. Our weather is just starting to heat up…some parts of NZ are already looking at drought conditions for the summer as we had a mild winter. We are sitting in a La Nina weather pattern so that means a good summer. I hope your cool weather is not too COOL – it certainly looks very pretty in those lovely photos!
    Cheers
    Jennie

  64. sigh ๐Ÿ™‚
same here – without the sun!!!
birds are fighting over the many food tables I set up and re-fill daily…. Am already through the second 3kg-bag (honestly!!) of sunflower seeds and the first 5kg bag of mixed seeds – have already changed three times the 6 fat balls hanging from the nearly dead branches of a crippled apricot tree in front of my study window. I just keep that tree for the birds… This morning as well as yesterday, the birds had to pick-fight their way to their food, some of the feeders are attached to branches of rose bushes or sitting on stone benches, so they had to pad a path first…. so much fun to watch and they come in such huge numbers!!!!
