Forgot the Fortune Cookies and the Smoked Salmon

Set table

The party began at seven-thirty, the table was set, the food prepared, the fireplace warm, everyone showed up, the oldest was Annie (91) and the youngest was my friend's Melanie's baby Matis (two months old).

Friends 1

Benjamin and Emily Philippe and matt

Between, serving the meal, filling glasses, wiping spills, removing plates and bringing out new ones, I barely had time to say, "How are you?" to our guests, let alone take a few photos.

I was the juggler, with many hats, balls in the air and a rhythm set by an inner clock that was telling what to do and when to do it.

Unfortunately, my inner clock forgot to remind me to take a photo of Chelsea, Mr. Espresso, Baby Matis, and well, most or our guests.

Nevertheless, we had a good time.

Fabrice and valerie

The night before Chelsea's Bon Voyage party, Sacha's childhood friend Fabrice, came over for dinner. He has been away at University so I hadn't seen him in awhile. When he came in I felt as though Sacha should be right behind him, though he was not.

Fabrice said that he reads my blog… but when he sees that it has to do with the brocante he skips over it (I think there is a conspiracy going on amongst my brothers Mathew, Mark and him!) he added, "I prefer when you talk about family and friends: show more personal photos would you!"

So Fabrice these photos are for you. Doesn't Fabrice's mother, Valerie (above photo) look like his sister instead?

Spinach roll

One of the two thousand little finger food thingies that I made, were spinach-blue cheese, puff pastry rolls. After the party I realized that I had forgotten to take out the smoked salmon rolls… looks like we are going to be having them for breakfast, lunch, and dinners to come.

In reply to some of your questions.

The French university (Grand Ecole, Skema) that Chelsea is attending in France, has a campus in China. She will continue her studies with them abroad. Part of her studies abroad will include three hours of Chinese a day. She should be able to ask for directions, say vegetarian, and brocante by the time I get there. Chelsea is working towards a master's in business management. She has one more year to go.

Why is she going to China to study if she can do so in France? Because the opportunity to do so is intriguing, available to her, and the chance to discover a different culture offers lessons that books cannot.

The party went well… and somewhere in the middle of it I thought I should have served fortune cookies. That is one bad thing about last minute planning, and living in the country, details such as fortune cookies get lost in the rush.

(best of luck in your studies, have fun and be safe) If you need a translator, I have a 21 year old son who is Chinese and fluent in Mandarin and a couple other dialects…and he likes camembert…alas not espresso…yes, this is a hint, lol

  5. You will be happy, discover much, meet new friends, buy jade, eat with chopsticks at record breaking speed, have a business suit tailored made, find an antique trinket for your Mum, and return home full of memories to share.

  6. She who studies abroad must contact Mother every other day.
I swear, that would be in a fortune cookie!
    Great Post, I loved it.

  7. So many people to wish her well, she’s well loved. Everyone looks happy and the food looks delicious, you did good! Fabrice is wise beyond his years.

  9. You will see great things, travel to great heights, learn of an ancient culture, taste new sensations, and you will travel home safely.

  10. You will travel extensively. You will be kind to your mother. You will be able to speak Mandarin enough. You will be happy and have fun.

    Dear Chelsea and Corey,
I have a funny (long) story to tell about Fortune Cookies as well as your fortune…
three years ago I was in the UK for the birth of my cousin’s first daughter – lucky me! (I flew from Australia) I was there for three weeks seeing family, my cousin becoming a parent, waiting for baby, waiting, waiting.
My cousin G, who is six years younger and me have been writing to each other since I had my boy 17 years ago. We are very close. She traveled to China to study at 20ish too!
It was approaching my last weekend in the UK.
We planned a feast of Asian food (mostly Chinese and Japanese) and hoped baby would be born. At the time she was living in the most multicultural city in the UK. She took me to a large Chinese supermarket were we could get our supplies… 🙂
On the menu was Sushi made by me, red been dumpings and coconut rice I believe. I remember G’s insisted on us using her Saki set and she also bought a packet of Fortune Cookies.
We sat around afterwards, full and happy and tiddly, and started to unfold the cookies from the standard cookie box, and read them out.
The first read “You are not being paranoid, there is someone following you!” another read “Your partner has sexy legs and does too many dishes” (or something like that). It was starting to get weird we thought. They continued till we found one that said “Help I am trapped in a fortune cookie factory!” and they kept going like that for the whole box!
Either way – they seem to create good fortune, that night G went into labour. She passed through an eternity of transformation it seemed..two mornings later a little girl was born. 🙂
Now I sit here tying this in Australia, my cousin G prepares to transform some more. Their second child is due to be born anytime in the next tree weeks or so.
I’ll have to remember to suggest the Sushi, Saki and fortune cookies again this time. 😉
Meanwhile I predict that: “You will discover the beauty of mountains, the warmth of a new girlfriends hand, the strangest of flavours. If you wish to you will find that pen and ink brings you closer to what you leave behind. And that the richness of the heart unfolds with time, like a flower in infinite bloom.”
Best wishes for your travels! Happy and safe and wonderous adventuring.
Dear Corey: for you I say, employ a family tradition of ours “Give your daughter a trinket of yours, not to keep – insist that she takes it and that it needs to be returned!” Sending love wings Kdbell xx

  12. you will answer all your e-mails. LOL
Sounds like a swell party. HNY

  13. Chelsea, May your life be always intriguing, like your mothers.

  14. Oh… I can’t tell you how many times I’ve forgotten to bring out a food I had made for a dinner party. I find it in the refrigerator the next day. Usually it is of no good without the other food I did serve and is now all gone.

  15. Marie-Noëlle

I love reading your blog, Corey… for what you offer, write and shoot…
AND I love reading all the comments too …
My days should be much MUCH longer !!!

  16. Chelsea, Home is where your Mom is!

  17. Well I don’t know if I should be the one to share this (and someone might have already in the comments but I am writing this in a dash!) but there is a little funny tradition in some circles to add the words “in bed” at the end of one’s fortune, particularly when reading it out loud in the company of friends. You can imagine the messages then! Not sure it’s appropriate to share with Chelsea but thought it shouldn’t go unsaid…
Trust me to say the unsaid…
    🙂
    Have fun, Chelsea!
She who seeks adventure will never be bored. (in bed)
    😛

  18. You are a beautiful person inside and out. Your life will be full of happiness and joy.

  19. Take pictures, absorb all the culture you can, imprint your memory with moments, and most of all, keep a journal Chelsea.
Corey, I want the filo/spinach recipe please!!

  20. I love your Brocante posts so much but I also loved seeing all these happy smiling people (and can never get enough of Annie). I still have food in the fridge/freezer that I forgot to bring out at one of our many get togethers over Christmas (and lots of cheese). My fortune cookie to Chelsea would read “if you are planning to travel – take tampons” 🙂
I CANNOT believe that is his mother, I thought perhaps a girlfriend – lucky lady!

  21. Oh, the irony for Chelsea, that the modern Fortune Cookie is alleged to have been invented about a century ago in… San Francisco!
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fortune_cookie
I don’t know how to say “Bon voyage” (or “Boa Viagem”) in Chinese, alas. However, from having grown up in the SF Bay Area, I know that the standard Chinese New Year’s greeting in Cantonese is “Gung hay fat choy!” — which, I’ve learned over the decades, will make no sense whatsoever to Mandarin-speakers.

  22. Brenda L from TN

The party looked marvelous!!! Yes, Fabrice’s mother did look like his older sister…she is so pretty…AH!! living in France must do that to you…I,too, like to see pictures of family and Annie but I want to see what you buy at brocante as well.
For Chelsea, have a safe trip, be careful and call home OFTEN…you have a bright future ahead with wonderful memories to remember…Good Luck!!

  23. P.S. “Why is she going to China to study if she can do so in France?”
One thing I wish I’d known while in college is the value of studying abroad — not so much for the formal learning as for learning about other cultures outside the classroom. (Dear me, so many of us were still so provincial back in my day!). Later in life, I couldn’t believe how rapidly my two years of classroom Portuguese (in which I’d done very well) improved during just three weeks in the Azores, where I had to “shift for myself.”

  24. She who travels far will gain much. Enjoy, Enjoy, Enjoy Chelsea. What an incredible opportunity and so glad you are an adventurer at heart. Corey, I always love your stories. Laurie

  25. Chelsea: May great JOY travel with you wherever you are.
Corey: Your wall in the first picture enchants me. Wishing I had a wall like that. The food looks good too and wish I were close enough to come and help you with the salmon rolls.

  26. Michelle M in KY

    Chelsea…
May safety and happiness surround you always. This is so exciting. Soak up every minute of it that you can. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity. Your Mama may miss you but she is also your biggest cheerleader. Study hard and enjoy yourself.

  27. Corey; that – once more – sounds like one of MY parties…. I too just go and invite friends and the number may change at any moment (in fact we had to cancel a quick last minute invite for supper on the 22nd December because of the terrible weather and I sat on all my stuff I bought in the morning when all was still well…..)!
I am around for the salmon rolls; I’m doing a gratin aux pommes de terres with smoked salmon tonight!!! And I add a salad with wild rocket (which I know since I spent time in Italy – and LOVE IT), small tomatoes (tasty, astonishing!!!) from Maroco, echalottes, grains from whatever I find in my cupboards and a lovely, full bodied RED…. mmmmh!!!!!
Chelsea: I wish you an unforgettable stay and that you think lovingly of your wonderful family EVERY DAY – you can choose your friends but not your family. But I bet if you could have chosen your family, you would…. You are an incredible team and a great, great example.
Much love and fun to be had! Kiki

  28. Chelsea, Never lose your sense of adventure! It gives you life. Blessings, Kimberly

  29. Brother Mathew

    I like that Fabrice. Brocante..seesh.

  30. recipe for blue cheese spinach puffs, svp!

  31. Good luck Chelsea!

  32. Fortune cookies are a great idea! I’ll have to keep that in mind for the future. Sounds fun!

  33. Chelsea sounds like one smart ‘cookie’!

  34. Bon voyage, Chelsea. I loved China and hope you will also. The area where you are going is so beautiful. I was very happy that some one had advised me to take toilet paper and hand sanitizer. So, she who packs tampons, toilet paper, and hand sanitizer will have a wonderful adventure in China.

  35. My fortune cookie for Chelsea is the lucky number 6 (you know how in the States they have the lottery numbers at the bottom you should play). According to my extensive research (Google), the number 6 represents in the Mandarin dialect success in business – here’s to great sucess with her business degree; it also represents happiness – may she find great happiness not only during her stay in China, but throughout her lovely life and in the Cantonese dialect – blessings; may they rain down upon her. Bon Voyage and God Speed.

  36. carol in CA

My fortune for Chelsea: You will have a grand adventure!

  37. Oh look here, what did I find in the fortune cookie?
It says, in Chinese traditional characters:
‘Where daughter shines, father and mother benefit also.”
I consulted a dictionary, and here’s what the English Translation says:
Why play in one country when you can play in the world? France will always be your home. Mom and dad will always be in your heart. But parents make indescribale sacrifices precisely so their children can reach their potentials. It’s an unspeakable bond, timeless, placeless, always and forever. And the bond just gets richer and more beautiful as each grows and matures into the new amazing memories.
Opportunities are everywhere if we open our eyes, hearts, spirits, and brain to receive. Take a look in China to see what element of France you can bring to them, to enchant, to inspire, to tantalize, to amuse. As an easy example: what about developing commercial real estate and interior renovations, for the middle class, and for the ultra rich? Is there someway to marry the the French Provencal elements with Beijing sensibility? What about executing something like La Madone as a tourist attraction?
Mom can bring all her brocante goodies to show the Chinese a good time! Let the Chinese re-live the romance of Marie Antoinette.
    They’ll go nuts!
In other words, in the meantime that the French are flocking to China to seek never-before seen opportunities, the Chinese are flocking to France to make romance too. The price for luxury goods stocks have been increasing by up to 80% in the last year. It’s no longer this country vs. that country. It’s no longer our country is better than your country. People who think like that are stuck in the dinosaur mindset and are NOT going to be the new global elites. It’s not just about France, China, the United States. It’s about India, Russia, Brazil, and every little town very where in the world. Be observant about dealing with the government.
Things are only beginning to get very, very, very (tres, tres, tres) interesting.
The fortune cookie was so delicious, that I had to eat another one. Here’s what this one says:
“See you at Davos 2020, Chelsea.”
Bring mom and dad for extra prosperity and filial piety.

  38. Chelsea, your great fotune was to be born to Corey and Yann, and to have a baby brother Sacha. This cosmic roll of the dice made everything possible: camembert, Mr. Espresso, Willows, and China. Enjoy every moment!

  39. Amazing journey awaits you!
Stay safe and have fun Chelsea!

  40. you will have a glorious future, marry the man of yur dreams, and make you mamma and papa proud grandparents.

  42. joanne nixon

safe journey to you, chelsey….go and soak up your china adventure…be the sponge.

  43. I give Chelsea the fortune I just got from that wise ol’ cookie:
Use Your Talents. That’s what they’re there for.
(something tells me she won’t have a problem with this!)

  44. This is a great opportunity for you Chelsea, I’m sure you will get the best from it. Good luck with this new adventure!

  45. Julie Ann

I hope that Annie & Matis will not let the generation gap get in the way of a great friendship ! Luv Jx

  46. Trust yourself. Listen to your inner voices.
Never make a decision when you need to pee.

  47. My fortune for Chelsea is this: Be not afraid. Live in the moment.
I would so love to be in Chelsea’s shoes right now. I never had to ask, “Why study abroad?” I just went, and it transformed me. I am only hoping I don’t actually PUSH my children out the door, but I might.

  48. Sweet Chelsea,
Look up into the world and you will find enchantment. And when there are challenging days always remember the moon you look up to at night is the same moon that was with your family at home. You are always connected. Your journey will be life changing in the most profound ways. Enjoy!

  49. dear chelsea,
the top bunk of overnight train cars is the best. you will looove china.

  50. Rebecca from the Pacific Northwest

Lovely sentiments all, but Ellen Cassily’s fortune wins. Hands down. I need to remember to never make a decision when I need to pee. Good advice for the long haul.

  51. Being in catering business for twenty-one long years, it’s not an easy job. Truly great feat achieved, congrats for that. I really feel that a catering service plays a very important role in parties because they are the one who take care of food, so it’s better to always hire a good and experienced catering service.
