Twenty Three Years

French husband proposed to me in a small neighborhood park in Paris. His breath was swirling white from the cold; funny when you are first in love, the things around seem brand new and miraculous,  seeing his breath made me feel less cold. We sat on a bench. French husband handed me a box of chocolates. Opening it I saw a simple gold band in one of the empty chocolate spots. Oh. I looked up at him, and followed his eyes…

                      Fountain

Slouched over the park's fountain was a young man, obviously poor in spirit, shaking from cold, he was holding a spoon over a lighter. I looked back at French Husband, and tried to understand. French Husband stood up, as if in a trance he went to the young man, put his arms around him and held him for which seemed like eternity. He rocked him and gently talked to him. Eventually, the two of them walked to the nearby phone booth, later an ambulance came. French Husband walked back to where I was sitting. He told me the young man was trying to shoot up heroin- and yet he felt it was more than that. French Husband sensed the young man was trying to kill himself, and he felt he needed someone to hold on to.

At that moment I knew my answer would be yes.

The way to know the heart of a person is to see how they treat people they don't know when in need.

The story of your proposal is like life in a capsule – for you and Yann it was a very happy moment, for the young man with the spoon it was probably one of the darkest moemnts in his life. Yann chose to share your happiness and love with the stranger in need and saved him from dispair. “Love is all you need”.

What a heart-breaking story…what a wonderful act of kindness on Yann’s part…I think he was right about the young man…lonely…maybe homeless…no one to care about or for him…
And all along I thought FH was the lucky one…Corey, you have found a TRUE gem in this man…May you have many, many more years of happiness together…

  30. Wishing you both every happiness and blessing this world and the one beyond holds for lovers, parents, and generous-hearted people. In honour of the day, here is a snippet from sonnet XVIII by Louise Labé (in modern French) 🙂

  31. He’s a keeper..

  51. Oh, Corey. Such an amazing story and recounting of same. Thank you for sharing it here.

  52. Happy Anniversary to you both and by the way there is a wonderful Brocanate in Beijing should you be stopping there when you visit Chelsea. We had wonderful fun there and bought some lovely art. In the Sunday NY Times magazine section last Sunday (not today’s) there was a wonderful last page essay about shopping at the Beijing Brocante. I thought of you when I read it…about a woman bargaining for a giant Buddah after cancer treatment. You could probably find it online. I know you will miss Chlesea. My daughter is a Chinese major, spent her sophmore high school year in China, last summer in Taiwan and all of her senior year of college next year in Asia. I know you will have a wonderful visit with Chelsea when you go. I do know about missing daughters… it is difficult but then we get to visit them in such interesting places.

  53. In this day and age of seperation, divorce and “growing apart” I have to say this is what I love about your blog.
I love that you live in France, I love the beautiful brocante items but what makes it all sing is you and your happy family. Refreshing, thank you.
Marriage is work, but next to parrenting it is themost rewarding work there is.
    Happy anniversary!

  54. we were born in the same year [although I am a month older than you]… we were married the same year [mine is in March] & we both have a daughter who is 21.. a few similarities 🙂
happy anniversary to you both xoxo

  56. Happy Anniversary Cory! You have a very special husband there. But then you knew that already didn’t you. I hope the two of you had a wonderful day. Congratulations!

  57. Your husband’s gentle, kind and loving spirit was overwhelming – how wonderful that you accepted and have lived happily ever after … all in all.

  58. Wow, you are so lucky! He is too of course but…wow…what a wonderful man. Someday I hope to find one just like that!

  59. Have a wonderful 23 more! When reading this, I felt I was there! You are two that God can use!

  60. Truly inspiring, I have read your blogs for a few months now after a foodie/travel loving friend suggested your lovely site was one after my heart but not yet made any comments. I just wanted to say how touched I am by the humanity in your husbands actions all those years ago and your words today.

  61. Stephanie M

  63. What a lovely story. Congratulations to you both.

  64. Your story was so heartwarming. It’s so refreshing to know that there are men out there that are so caring and compassionate to strangers. You’ve got a rare gem in French Husband … and he in YOU! Happy Anniversary! BTW, I LOVE reading your blog, even though I don’t always comment on it.

Dear Corey and Yann; It seems that yours is one of those relationships to which others aspire. It always gives me joy to read about it when something is posted. Yann’s actions those many years ago told a story about the character of a man. No wonder your heart melted, as mine did when reading what he did.Doing unto others as you would have them do unto you; a very precious quality; not unlike the kindness you have shown me through your caring words. I think the two of you make a wonderful couple. Congratulations on the first 23 years and may the next 23 continue to fill your hearts with the love you so readily share with others.
    XO

  66. Happy Anniversary and I think everything you two do together is a celebration. Some of the photos you have shared here show many of those moments: playing hide and seek in the park in Paris; dancing in many places, particularly the sidewalk in Texas? this summer; the formal party overloooking the Mediterranean, etc. Enjoy!

  67. What a lovely man you chose to share your life with–your story speaks volumes about him, and of you that you wanted more of that person in your life!! A Very Happy Anniversary!

  68. What a lovely man you married. Happy Anniversary.

  69. Oh my God, you made me cry… what a gloriously dear husband you have! And what a touching declaration that was; I bet NOBODY in the whole world could not have said YES after that experience!
Congratulations and blessings for you Corey and Yann, your wonderful FH… One day I shall tell you how my Hero Husband ‘got me’… Or rather, why, after knowing each other for years and years, I also couldn’t not marry him!!! (but this is no blog story…)
Lovely photos – I immediately knew it was Versailles – I have similar shots!
    Big hug, gros bisous
    Kiki
