Cooking up a Collage in the Kitchen

Collage old papers corey aamro

When I learn something new, or dip my foot into an old pleasure, or start something that I have been meaning to do but haven't done it… well once I get into it, I am on a roll. I want to keep on doing what I am doing, and not stop. Call it mad inspiration, manic, or simply passion… it is a driving force to reckon with.  Are you like this too? Once I start something that inspires me I usually don't want to stop… even if it is passed midnight.

Copied old papers corey amaro

When Chelsea and Sacha were little I stopped reading. I am by nature a night owl who doesn't need much sleep. When the children went to bed, I would read. I loved to read. The problem was "one more page" turned into late nights… Topped that with babies that didn't sleep through the night and who were up at six. No sleep was not enough.

Well, something had to give, I stopped reading at night, so I could be a better mom during the day.

Anyway, that is just to say that when I do something I love I don't want to stop, unless babies are waking me up at two, three, four in the morning.

Hand written antique letters

After wallpapering the bathroom. I was itching to get my hands in glue again. The kitchen wall was crying my name… and so yesterday I dove back into it.

First, I copied a bunch of old papers I had. Then I covered the wall with neutral colored tones copied old hand-written letters. Next, I collaged images I had (copied) over the neutral toned letters, to add color and depth.

I collaged an eight meter square of wall with copied old papers. The wall, was a stairwell with two doors under it. Can you imagine the ton of angles! After glueing the truckload of papers, the doors didn't match. I am painting them today.

Of course I will show you the results tomorrow. I'll let you know my next adventure into wallpapering. Our home didn't have a single wallpapered wall until this weekend… at this rate I fear it might say the opposite by next weekend.

  1. What an awesome idea, I am looking forward to the finished photos!… never thought of this, and the effect is ..well, a terrific idea! …

  2. I Love this Idea!! I am convinced it will be very beautiful. I am so excited to see the final result. This upcming spring we are wallpapering our tiny little Wc, do you have any good suggestions for a light romantic French inspired wallpaper?
    Enjoy a lovely afternoon,
    Warm greeting, Aina

I really am looking forward to your pictures of this creation! I never would have thought of doing this, but your teaser photo is quite lovely and soooo “Corey”! Have fun gal!

  4. 🙂 I meet a woman who cannot be stopped once she gets going… 🙂 Good girl!
I read ALL THE TIME, EVERYWHERE, I always have at least 3 books at different places and sometimes I forget what’s in the one because I hadn’t been able to go back to it for a moment…. I even have bookmarks with the words: Ooo go on, just ONE more page!
Can’t wait to see your kitchen offerings… 🙂
Corey; I do hope that this doesn’t appear multiple times…. My computer tells me that it couldn’t upload…. and pls: submit again!?

  5. What a fantastic concept, now you can read the walls while you cook. I cannot wait to see your creation. It’s all going to look so fantastic with your chandelier. Yes, I’m a am a little obsessive, I’ve made peace with it over the years.

  6. You are a true ARTISTE!

  7. Yes. That feeling of being immersed in my latest consuming passion I know too well.
Yet. Not always. Sometimes I grow still. Maybe to allow everyday life to catch up with me — or vice versa? In any case, my life consists of feast and fast — while I long to find that elusive middle way which saints and poets know first hand.

Your picture already give more than a hint of the fantastic final product to come.
Can’t wait for the outcome of your creative outburst! :-)))
You may have noticed, I am a fellow night owl (ARE there day owls?).
Always been. As a child I got regularly caught reading under the bedcovers by the shine of a torch (gosh, I am turning European, what’s wrong with a flashlight?). Like you, I stopped reading fiction after the birth of my first child and that sabbatical lasted until the fourth one was borne. The youngest one was a couple of days old – and I had finally learned to celebrate the weeklong “lying-in” after childbirth – when a friend brought me her mother’s latest Rosamunde Pilcher, “The Shell Seekers”. That was the very first book I read in its entirety after something like seven years of abstinence! And I loved it, I could not have cared less that it was from the “trivial” shelf and not at all what I enjoyed reading before children came into my life. 😉

    I agree, Judy 0!
There are times, when one’s comments do not justice to Corey,
yours does it, thank you for expressing what I feel too.

  10. Tongue in Cheek

Well said! Feast or fame, seeking to strike a balance.

  11. You are INCREDIBLE! What wonderful ideas you come up with -it’s fun to vicariously be part of the process. Thanks, Corey.

  12. such gorgeous wall paper!! I can imagine it’s going to look so elegant and oh, the angels!
ps. my angels didn’t go well. I’ve decided to stop embroidering them. the pattern I’m using is free on the internet and obviously was made on the computer without a correction by a person. so the colors are awful and I better stop before lots of threads got wasted. as I’m an owl too, I’m still at my computer, it’s about midnight, looking for an embroidery pattern to buy.

How fun, better tell FH not to sit still for too long lest he get papered!

  14. Can’t wait to see! You are such a creative genius 🙂

  15. It does sound like you are having alot of fun. Can’t wait to see the results.

  16. Barb at Coronado Daily Photo

Corey, you are so clever! I can’t wait to see the “after” photos.
Just have to tell you – today I blogged about a “brocantess” and her shop. I met her through your comments section, even though we’re in the same California town.
    You’ve created a lovely community – thanks!

  17. I can’t wait to see the new wall! A dear elderly friend had her WC wallpapered in old New Yorker covers. It was so much fun to be in that room!

  18. Sharon Penney-Morrison

I am not sure how to tell you this, but, I think it is called manic. It is that space between planning and burn out! I would not know how to work any other way.
When I am on project, I don’t answer the phone, or leave the house. I am totally focused. It gets done, and then I play for awhile.
Love what you are doing with the papers!!

  19. Corey, kitchen (and bathroom) walls tend to attract more moisture than most rooms because of their usage, so I was wondering if there are special precautions you’re taking to protect your labor-intensive projects from becoming damaged by humidity. Does anyone else here have suggestions that have worked for them or someone they know? (Varnish or shellac overcoat, maybe?)

  20. I am not a night owl, i am an early bird, I love to get up early and have space to myself and then when I am creating my dolls I get into the flow, the slipstream and time stands still. It is almost as though the universe stops time and one hour literally just fades into the next. I understand how you feel time is infinite and so is your energy until you have finished and then, your soul breathes and you can rest. Keep creating and sharing Corey you are a true inspiration to me at present, I am procrastinating, I have misplaced my flow for a while.

  21. Amy Kortuem

Well, then call me manic, too – and join the club! I’m the exact same way with what I’m “in to” at the time.
Mine comes from just not being able to do it all at once or switch gears very easily. If I’m reading books about France, that’s all I read. If I’m listening to medieval harp music, that’s all I’m listening to. If I’m working on writing my book, that’s it – no other creative activity.
Which explains the blisters on my fingers at the moment…all I’m focusing on is playing the harp to get ready for my St. Patrick’s season concerts.

  22. Love your ideas and the finished WC we saw yesterday. I am the same way when doing anything — I prefer to call it passion 🙂

  23. Shelley Noble

    Love this! Inspired manic passion!

  24. It’s heating up in the kitchen, collage that french husband of yours, begin with a blank canvas. Oh la la

  25. Cynthia @Beatnheart

Oh yes indeed…an obsessive myself. Just discovered Photo manipulation via Picknic and apeture. No photo left unturned…days turn into nights…laundry turns into mountains…Corey, I’m celebrating one year of blogging…thanks to you!

  26. I can think of nothing more beautiful than wallpapering with your documents and paper.
    You have inspired this gal.

  27. This is so exciting! I can’t wait to see the updates. The water closet looks beautiful.

  28. jend’isère

Millefeuilles is your kitchen project! Your intention to bake more has turned a delicious twist. Millefeuilles (literally 1000 leaves or sheets) are American “Napoleons” or UK “Cream Slices”. Waiting with impatience to see the delicacy you concocted.

  29. Romantic Dinner Bruges

Fantastic Wallpaper and i like that . Great idea and nice details shred in the post . amazing your this post

  30. I too had to give up reading, novels that is. I kept disappearing into my room to read. Now I stick with non-fiction. I tend to be a bit obsessive about things and am forever trying to achieve balance. I love the tease of your photos. Can’t wait to see the finished kitchen!
