The Color of Friendship

The color of friendship what is it?

Petals in soft shades of light, with hints of character in the raw earthy toned roots.

When I met French Husband years ago he asked me, “How can you love so many people?”

His question struck me as odd… “How?” I asked, “I suppose that is a result of growing up in a large family in a small town. I never knew any differently.”

Often when I write my blog I think of my family, my friends… those I love. They are no longer nearby…. an ocean separates us.

Blogging keeps me in touch. Over the years the circle of friendship grew. I am daily amazed by the power of blogging. How connected it makes me feel. How the circle grows, connecting, caring, bringing together… the world is small and the heart is large.

Yesterday Kate wrote this comment (below) it struck me…. not only because of the infamous orange armoire but because we are all looking for the connection, the dot to dot, the symbols, the color of friendship, the key to loving. Life is full of messages, and today I am thankful for hearing one of them.

“My heart stopped for a moment when I read this post! Paint the orange armoire?! NO! Perhaps I should explain myself. Let’s go back a few years ago when I, flipping through an issue of Victoria magazine, literally swooned at the sight of an amazing orange armoire in the midst of a beautifully simple (yet elegant) kitchen.

I immediately tore that page out of the magazine (don’t worry, it was my own copy) and put it in my LOVE IT file. I would add to and edit that file periodically, but my love for that orange armoire never wavered. It wasn’t just the armoire, it was the whole composition of the room. Somehow over the years my LOVE IT file got misplaced, but I never forgot my favorites.

Fast forward to this past November, my beloved father had just died two weeks before after suffering through a long illness for five years, and I had just returned to work (I work part time at an antiques store). I was pretty raw at this point, but needed to get out of the house and try to think of something other than how sad I was. As I was wandering through the store to see what treasures the owner had unearthed, I saw a stack of old magazines. I picked up the one on the top of the stack, casually flipped through it, and there it was. MY orange armoire. I sat. I smiled. Then I read the accompanying article and……..Wait! I know this woman! She’s a friend of mine!

Every morning, while I drink my coffee, she tells me a little bit about her life. She shows me photos, she makes me laugh. I’ve even purchased a couple of her brocante finds. What do you know, all this time that orange armoire was living with her! With YOU! Such a seemingly small discovery (my long lost orange armoire and the fact that it’s yours) brought me a little joy at such a sad time in my life. This time I didn’t tear the page out of the magazine. Instead, I’m keeping the entire issue, for there is far less chance of me misplacing a whole magazine.

So, paint it? Obviously, I love the orange. I really do. If, however, an aubergine armoire would make you smile, then why not? I’m pretty sure I would tear out a picture of that one, too. Thank you for making me smile.”

Kate.

ps My mom and I just spent a lovely evening at a new vintage event a couple of hours from our little town in the mountains. Even more special than seeing all of the lovely treasures the vendors have found and/or created…is spending time with kindred spirits. I’ve met such dear people over the last couple of years at fancy flea markets and through blogging. Kindred spirits. Wonderful friends. And Victoria Magazine…has always held a special place in my heart, it’s no wonder that you, Corey, are one of my most very favorite finds!

  3. For me it is white and red. I was born in Poland, lived there for twenty something years, then I moved to Canada, lived there for twenty something years and now I am back in Poland again. My family is mostly in Poland, but I have met many wonderful people and made friends both in Poland and in Canada. The flags of both of these countries are white and red http://polonicahomeagain.blogspot.com/2011/01/red-white-czerwone-i-biale.html so for me, the colour of friendship is white and red.
    Have a great weekend!

  4. A miriad of colour. I love subtle colours and tones and at times I love a splash of pure colour, but there is no mistaking true friendship it is as beauty in the eye of the beholder. My favourite colour true Provence blue, I visit you but do not leave my home, I share in your sorrows and your joys, whilst feeling them in my core. In my darkest hour you, Corey, were my one true friend even though you may not have realised it. I do not comment often, but I read you regularly, and your words of wisdom reach me in ever growing shades of colour, all beautiful and magnificent. Serendipity when I found you and everyday since. A truer friend I have never had, one day I hope that we will meet so that I can say these words to you, Thank you for being my friend.

  5. Friendship is the color of sunshine- sometimes a golden mellow yellow, sometimes firey and red, sometimes soft and pink. The blogging world has opened up so many doo-s it’s amazing!! Funny that your friend mentioned aubergine- I decided that would be the next color I based an art challenge on!

  6. Kate writes so beautifully..her words taken from my own heart .
I may have once doubted I could feel a kinship and connection with friends met only in print. But I do–Oh how I do and it enriches my life as all friendships do and causes me to grown and learn as well as to feel the emotions associated with other lives—as the best friendships do.
The color of friendship? I think perhaps a soft and chalky translucent hue that allows us to see the person underneath. Friends behind the hue can be reflected in an aubergine armoireor any other colors that create their lives. Even friends known only though the black and white of printed words cast their own world of color behind that warm translucent hue.

  7. Any color will cheer me up, whether subtle or bright, complex or primary!!! Although, for the record, I still favor the natural wood color of the armoire…
(I suppose color-blind folks just don’t know what they’re missing, so it doesn’t bother them).

  8. Friendship is painted with the colours of kindness and love and devotion and loyalty and pure joy.
It must be the colours of Heaven♥

For me friendship has no color…but lots of feelings ~ warm, cozy, funny, sad.

  10. What a beautiful story shared by Kate. We never know how we affect others, do we?
I think friendship is a rainbow of colors–bold and bright red, orange and yellow for laughter shared and happy occasions celebrated, cool and sensitive green, blue and violet as we encourage and anchor one another during challenging and sad times. Many faces of friendship require many colors.

  11. Now, you went and brought tears to my eyes – both you and Kate! Isn’t it wonderful, the interconnectedness that this medium brings about? Like thousands of hands reaching for each other through space and time, reflecting every color of the rainbow. The color of friendship, why, of course, it is the color of you, and you, and you.

  12. C, I agree with Ana above . . .true Provencial blue is the color. Life is hectic and crazy, we all ride the tide of daily life craziness. We long for peace, stillness, friendship . . .the things that mattter most in life. I have a friend who I have coffee with each and every morning . . .think about that, I said each and every morning!! She fills me up with good advice, loving thoughts, and just plain goodness. Her photos keep my dreams and passion alive. She asks nothing of me. This friend is a very important part of my life that I treasure. Be safe, my friend, on your travels to China. xo

  13. It’s a color wheel.
Warm and cool, pairs of colors
Corey, your hue is complementary to mine 😉
    Bon weekend!
Going home to Willows..will honk loudly as I pass by your Mom’s house.

  14. Amazing. Amazing!! I kinda hope she gets to visit you one day and sees the orange armoire in person. If she’s anything like me, she’ll wrap her arms around it!

Ahhh…so many people here expressed my feelings exactly about you and the “friendships” found here. I feel as if I have known you all for ages…I love reading your posts…some of you write like me but some express such beautiful feelings and words…just like Corey does and I love reading them all.
But the color of friendship? I see lots of warm vibrant colors…reds, yellows (which is why my kitchen is yellow), oranges and grass greens. That’s what I see.
Hurry home Corey…have a safe trip back.

What a beautiful post and an amazing coincidence. How wonderful for your reader to find this connection between the two of you. Blogging helps us to connect to like minds, and our thoughts and words keep us together. Thanks to you, I have a blog and the enrichment it has given me is endless. It has helped me in so many ways. ” the world is small and the heart is large;”
a thought so eloquently stated as we have become used to when reading your blog, dear one.
After reading Kate’s story of coincidence and connection I would have difficulty changing the colour of the armoire if it were mine for it now pays hommage to something ever so poignant.
My thoughts are with you Kate.

  18. What a beautiful story and post it brings tears to my eyes.
    The color of friendship?
Kindness and freedom to be ourselves.

What a perfectly wonderful post, and what a beautiful comment. The older I get, the less I believe in “coincidences” and the more I believe in “meant to be’s.” I love that Kate found that beloved issue with your orange armoire, and that it brought her happiness at a time when she so desperately needed it. I think Corey is the color of friendship. It is no specific color, while at the same time being every conceivable color… Donna

  20. This post made me cry, tears of compassion with Kate who found an ‘orange friend’ in her dark hours, tears of happiness for such an extraordinary ‘find’, tears of ‘feeling in communion’ for all of us; sharing your life and my co-readers experiences of theirs…. it feels like one large group of dear friends! i am quite sure that we would all go along fine because we all enjoy the same ‘materials of friendship’. I have not one colour of friendship, I have a palette of many shades and many colours, dark ones, soft ones, clear shiny ones and subdued tones too…. I made the (small) effort of writing to my former best girlfriend (who fell out of love with me over something I never really knew what) and she sent me a mail saying that she was very touched; I should think that THAT colour is a rather darkish, intense purple maybe… When I think lovingly of my old mother the colour changes to a springtime yellow-green-happy tone; she is nearly, very nearly blind and I bring her with my thoughts the colours of MY day, my feelings, my joys and happiness. Aaah, I could go on and on; but I need to cook supper for my dark blue clad Hero Husband; a colour I LOVE!!!

  21. What a lovely story of friendship. Color of friendship is the colors of the rainbow.

  22. What a heart touching post. I missed so much the last few days. I’ve been sick and just now caught up.
Whatever you decide to do will be gorgeous, I’m sure.
The color of friendship to me is creamy whites, antique white. It’s the common thread my blog friends and I share.

  23. That’s lovely. If I had to define it with a color I guess I would say a prism. Almost everyone has a different aura and something special to offer.

  24. I have it! Update your armoire with a lacquered look in… Chinese red! That way you’ll still have your orange, but a whole new look!

  25. Very sweet, Kate. I remember the day that I discovered this blog and something clicked and I spent the rest of the day searching through all of my hundreds of old magazines looking for those articles and pics that I loved about Corey. So nice to get to know the lady behind those beautiful rooms! Thanks again for sharing your life with us Corey.

ps-how about Annie Sloan Chalk Paint Scandinavian Pink for that piece? Very similar color, but softer-looks great with grey!

  26. what a fine precious sharing with Kate. how about painting the armoire whatever color but keep a little hidden spot unpainted to remain terra cotta orange – craving that color lately. you can call it “kate’s corner”. i like the purple (maybe not aubergine..) idea alot, i have been purple with deep green plants around it and some white, just like your picture. or green with white trim and purple inside? the color of friendship? hmmm, greens and blues and yellows jump into my mind. red may be a bit of a warning…! i am going to google scandinavian pink, sounds divine.

  27. To me, the color of friendship is a well-loved, well-worn pale pink (cotton or linen) shirt. It’s just delightfully pink.

Jenna’s answer is great. I love all colors and especially love prisms, and have one hanging in my bedroom window. Some days the rainbows are pastel, other days they are bright and vibrant, sometimes the look like shooting stars, other days they are soft bubbles dancing around… All are wonderfull and make me smile.

  29. Dearest Corey, Imagine my surprise when I sat down this afternoon and read your post about the comment I left yesterday. I’m one of those annoying blog readers who rarely leave comments. Shyness? Rushed? Nothing to say? Afraid of sounding ridiculous? Who knows why. But yesterday I felt compelled to “speak” and look what happened……..kindness and compassion rained down, and once again you (and your readers) brought a smile to my face. Thank you!

  30. love this idea!!

  31. I love this; Thanks for sharing! It is a beautiful story of fragments of love that shape our lives. The color of friendship is green for me. It is in new beginnings, growth and finding ways to connect our roots, whether we craft, write, recycle, garden, etc. It is finding the common soil/soul, in our words and actions, that reflect the impact of our lives on each other.

  32. Thank you for the reminder Kate that there are no coincidences in life. Your comment was a delicious addition to Corey’s blog.

  33. Oh my goodness, what a beautiful story, Kate. Thank you for writing.

  34. Thank you Corey and Kate, for sharing this with us all..it is a lovely sentiment- I am all for memories….
Please tell us what issue Victoria it was ..I would love to go through my stack of copies and find it..
Or Corey- you could post the article on your blog?…please?
have a lovely weekend- Colette ~ Afrique du Sud

Thankyou Corey for sharing Kate’s story with us out here, wherever we are in the world…….friendship is such a special word and I too am constantly in awe of the friendship which exists out there in the world of blogging, facebook and in my internet quilting and mosaic groups which have all become so very, very special to me over the past eight years.
Hugs and smiles of love and friendship to all.

  38. Despite the annoying Disney song, it truly IS a small world after all. (what have I done? That horrible ditty will be stuck in my head all day…)
    Cheers,

Such friendship…and written so beautifully, Kate…just a thread between heaven and earth so why shouldn’t friendship be the same. So close.
Thanks Corey for another beautiful blog.

  41. Sometimes when it feels like your life is spiraling out of control you find something like this that reminds you that the spiral is a circle….the circle of life….and again and again (if you let it) life will eventually bring you back to something that brings you joy.
Thanks Kate, for reminding us, and Corey for sharing it.

  42. Brenda, Kindred Hearts Antiques

Every friend wears their own color well! I’d have to define friendship as a “Rainbow”…always shows up after a storm and brings sunshine along!

  43. What a wonderful story. It’s amazing how life is. It’s never just a coincidence.

  44. Rebecca from the pacific northwest

I’m catching up on a few days’ worth of your posts (plus comments) so just ran into that lovely long comment. I rarely go back and read comments made later on, so I’m so glad you copied this one in its entirety for all your readers.
And I don’t care what color the furniture in your kitchen is! It’ll be fun and nice, whatever you decide.
