Koh Phangan Island Hopping Sounds Easy….

Carrying a suitcase on the beach

We left Koh Samui to go to Koh Phangan. Island hopping. French Husband's dream.

Our bugalow in Koh Samui was too close for a taxi, yet close enough to walk to the port, though we could not roll the suitcases on the sandy beach. I had French Husband carry the suitcases for a photo, "Yes, I nearly got it… Oh no too much sun, let me try again. Oh…no that was blurry, let me take another…" At that point I had to stop teasing him otherwise my suitcase might have become a boat on the water.

Entering ferry

We waited on the narrow, wooden pier with the others for the ferry to come, and when it did we crossed a narrower plank balance beam to go aboard.

I carried my suitcase on the balance beam, yes I did.

View from ferry

The views from the ferry were nothing short of spectacular!

I loved breaking the waves! The ferry rocking deep and long. But most I loved the feeling,  that Christopher Columbus might have had on his first voyage on uncharted seas. Adventure even if brief and planned.

Path to treehouse

When we arrived in Koh Phangan we took a shuttle (pickup) to the other side of the island.

The drive was as wild as any four wheel driving I have seen. I cannot imagine the ride in a storm. Eventually, we came to "the trail" to the huts, and were dropped off. Luckily another vehicle came by and took our suitcases, we walked alongside as his truck was full. A good twenty minute hike. I dread carrying our suitcases back to the so-called main road when we leave.

I'll add photos tomorrow…. but let me say this about where we are at:

Hut.  Middle of Nowhere.  Ocean.  Palm trees with coconuts that fall.  Drinks and incredible food.  Wifi.  and No toilet paper.

Water is the new toilet paper.

Those are the priorities – who needs toilet paper when you have all that!!

  2. Very ecological: fish pedicure and water as toilet paper :-).
The place where you are staying today sounds idillic. Can’t wait for the photos tomorrow.

    Take care !

You have me in stitches here! *giggles*
And now you have left me wondering what the fish’s job will be this time. 😉
The second laugh was the WiFi, and imagining you there, reporting live from the middle of nowhere, with fish nibbling on your toesies.

  6. So pretty. The first pic with FH reminds me of the poem Footprints.

  7. Corey you are an adventurous woman! WiFi and no toilet paper? Note to self..pack toilet paper! Enjoy as it sounds like paradise to me!

  8. no tp, lol:)!

It sounds so romantic and wonderful, even without toilet paper. Asleep beneath the palm trees, waves hitting the beach, sand beneath you, snuggled next to the one you love. A dream come true. Relaxation in it’s best form.

Thank you for letting us enjoy your trip thru Thailand with you… albeit thru WiFi…
Hope they got enough soap tho, right? right?
As you say, at least you got water handy… imagine, what if they would have just handed you a shovel???
Wishing you that the rest of your trip will be just as delightful as it sounds so far.
Your pictures are breathtaking as is.

Sounds gorgeous. The new photo format is artsy but hard to see!

  14. Corey, your trip has been so fun and I have learned a lot. How did you know what islands to visit in order to plan your trip? I get that you visited your friend and I am sure she gave advice. Honestly, I am amazed at your locations . . .I would have never of known how to plan an incredible trip as yours. Keep giving us the pictures, they are great!

  15. Such amazing places you are visiting. If we were playing the game “Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego,” or in this case Corey and FH, I would never guess your destinations.

    NO TP????….Ugh!!!
FH DID say “one bag”, didn’t he? Now you know why…he knew he would have to carry them!!
    But the scenery is stunning!!!
Thanks for encluding us on voyage…

You paint such a lovely picture of your travels!Just be careful of falling coconuts! What is it about the lack of toilet paper ??? Though I did see a comment before you left to take it with you!
    Looking forward to lots more!

  18. Wifi and no tp? It is worth it and I can’t imagine no tp! The islands sound like a dream come true. Thank you so much for sharing this trip with us. You should be a travel agent etc. You come up with the most unique and interesting trips! I would always trust your trip planning! Can’t wait to see more. Safe travels to you and Yann.

Corey your adventure is another breath of fresh air for me! I am still in the midst of winter with snow and freezing temps so seeing your pics reminds me that the sun does exist! Blessings, Kimberly

  20. I have been picturing you with one bag between you. So happy to see two, though I can imagine it is a pain carting it around. I keep telling myself, travel light, travel light. 🙂
This is the island our friend said to visit, but when I heard from them the adventure getting across the island I wasn’t so sure. They said it was their favorite place to stay.
Have you mentioned the massage place in Chiang Mai yet? Maybe I missed it. Thanks!

hey,any word on stinky cat? Bestest,Denise

Who needs toilet paper when you are in paradise? (Well, easy for me to say!) Those of us following your journey with delight are so happy you have wifi, though! This is truly an amazing experience, so loving being able to share it – thank you!

Island-hopping by ferry is definitely easier in the Azores! Corey, did you take either the passenger or auto ferry while you were there? Or did you just fly?

When I was in Australia, a plant was pointed out to me that was called “Bushman’s Toilet Paper.” It had soft, supple leaves. Maybe you can look for something like that????!!

  25. gloria p

What a memorable trip. Thank you for sharing it with us.

  26. I’d take the toilet paper over wifi…. but then I’d miss your blog. Tough choices … but what wonderful memories.

  27. I’m suffering from a little cabin fever just now, so your posts have been a real treat. Thanks for sharing 😉
I had to laugh at the toilet paper issue, because I’ve been there so many times in the past….I’ve travelled to some amazing remote locations and been challenged over the lack of many various materialistic objects that you take for granted, but it certainly makes you revaluate what’s important.
I’ve also got boxes of photo’s (before digital days) so looking at your adventures I’m thinking it’s a shame to keep them all hidden in a box. I need to bring them into the light….
    Thanks again for the inspiration.

  28. I was with you until you said “no toilet paper”. Did you pack any tissues? Probably not in that one suitcase. Oh my.

  29. Marie-Noëlle

While you were island hopping, I could not send any comment to your blog… I felt very frustrated to go post hopping and never to be able to lay my hat (case!) anywhere …
    Pleased to be back…

  30. Oh Corey what a wonderful dream vacation you are having. I love that you and Yann are staying at places that are not on the beaten path! What wonderful memories you are making. Well maybe with the exception of the lack of toilet paper 😉 Have fun! Maura 🙂
