Koh Phangan and Koh Samui are two islands off of southern Thailand.

We stayed a few days in each. In Koh Samui we rented a motorcycle, ate out, and stayed in a lovely hotel called Saboey. We had dinner by the water, watch classic Thai dancers, and felt we were living in Paradise.

After a few days of classic beauty we took a ferry to the second island Koh Phangan.

French Husband wanted to stay on the isolated, hard to reach, bungalow on the beach…. The no toilet paper, and a board for a bed were just two of the things I found discomforting. After two nights at Tree House we ventured fifteen minutes through the jungle, crossed a river, hiked across the beach of Than Sadet to another "bungalow" resort called Plaas… the difference between the two "bungalow resorts" can be compared to; Relief and Discomfort as far as the "bungalows" were concern, for the same price.

Mind you Tree House wasn't bad, and the bungalows on the rocks seemed better than the one we had. We had bungalow #11 which was nothing short of a nightmare. The toilet was in a dungeon, the window was broken and there was a constant leak in the hose for a shower. (Photo Tree house bungalow but not the one we stayed in.)

Nevertheless the food was outstanding, and the "restaurant" area delightful. But the bungalow we had could not seduce me into staying longer. Hence, we trekked across to the other beach.

This is the hike up to Plaa's… 217 steps to our beautiful bungalow!

At Plaa's Bungalow we found our 'happy place' as a young woman we met on the island calls it….

  1. oh this post brought back memories – of EXACTLY the same thing – we stayed in one bungalow on Koh Phangan – it was just a little too basic for me – so we walked through the jungle and found another lot of bungalows !! How funny….you have brought back memories from 20 years ago… then we returned to Koh Samui for some luxury!!

  2. Really nice images.

  3. Wow interesting and attractive images.

  4. I admire your adventurers spirit, nothing daunts you and you come up smiling everytime. I take my hat off to you Corey and Jann, I love travelling this road with you, it is one I will never travel myself other than on your blog but I love your witty descriptions and your staying power!

  5. men definitely have different agenda. I’m slowly and gently trying to prepare my dear husband for village hopping with suitcases in Provence. Glad you found a better bungalow.

  6. I thought Sacha was your carbon copy, but here you can very much tell FH is part of the mix. Your legs must be ripped by now.

That big rock on the beach is impressive … it looks like a big turtle… and makes me imagine Koh Tao (=Turtle Island).
I have just browsed a few sites about Thaïland, all its “Kohs” and the places you’ve mentioned…
I’m ready to go NOW !!!
    Following you daily !!!

  8. Looks like you’re in paradise, although the board bed and no toilet paper probably helped keep you from floating into nirvana

PS – Thanks to you, I have noticed there are many, many scubadiving resorts round there… Very useful for me and my family (which includes 2 scubadivers)… That will be for another summer though as summer 2011 is planned… and VERY promising.
    (I’ll tell you later …)

  10. There are only so many things a woman should or could give up! Glad you have a sense of humor and adventure!

  11. amazing simply amazing…. what stories you will have to tell your grandchildren…

  12. Love the photos! I lived in the Philippines in the late 60’s. Traveled to Hong Kong but not Thailand.

  13. …and there WAS a toilet! with blue walls and hopefully toilet paper – what a happy compromise. Truly a paradise.

  14. Wow, puts a whole new spin on “packing light”. What do you really need there but each other and a few clothes. Beautiful place.

  15. Oh, my. I’m definitely not one for roughing it to *that* extent.
Your trip has covered such varied things–certainly the trip of a lifetime! Continued safe travels.

  16. That photo of FH hauling the luggage around is so hysterical! What a great adventure!

WOW!!! What a HUGE difference going from a toilet in a dungeon and no TP and a board for a bed to that BEAUTIFUL place WITH a lovely bed and a bathroom with blue walls AND TP…Just Beautiful!!! YOU FOUND PARADISE!!
Bet FH now knows which place is BETTER!!! I’m STILL LOL about him carrying 2 GREAT BIG HEAVY suitcases over BOULDERS….LOL. Bet he won’t go back THERE anytime soon.

What caprice! Thoroughly enjoying your vacation. Did you know there are convertible suitcases that can be used conventionally and wheeled, or converted into a backpack? I also mail the not so expensive spoils I gather to myself so I don’t have to carry them, adds a little to the budget but then you get to open presents when you get home and your back will thank you. Please post some pics of the food, I am interested in what they are serving today:)

  19. Just beautiful! I hope you now have TP!!!! I want to drop everything and run away …. what adventures!
    Thank you for sharing.

  20. Hi V.C.
I know about the suitcases that convert into backpacks (we have some), and posting items back… I also know about wheels on suitcases and my husband’s strong arms, and moreso I know about my stubborn ways….
Photos of food I can do.
    🙂

  21. Beautiful! Now if we didn’t need to take that crazy, bumpy ride to get there and then carry luggage along the beach – I would be there. What an adventure. Thanks so much for taking us along.

  22. You make sound traveling trough these parts of the world like a piece of cake !
I am so inspired, there is coconut in every dish i make .
    Amazing pictures!

  23. Looks like a beuatiful place! Wow….what an adventure you are on. Sounds like something out of a movie! Good thing you have a strong husband! Thanks for sharing your journey as I will probably never make it to those parts.

French husband is starting to look more like jungle-boy!
Am admiring the locals and your adventurous soles — I think I prefer looking at your fantastic photos… than actually living it. I might of strung my hubby up from one of those beautiful trees by now!!!! Give me 5 star resort anytime!
BTW – I now see why Jann said one suitcase! I am loving the suitcase photos the best!
    Happy St. Patrick’s day!

  25. This guy in the find-the-tourist plaid shorts is greeted at the door by a half-naked woman with a rockin’ bod and the screen reads, “Wonderful room and a fantastic view”. I’d like to see what his thought bubble had to say. Then again, maybe he just plays for the other team.

  26. Now we know why French Husband insisted on, “one suitcase.” Poor Yann! But then, he is the one who insisted on island hoping…. 😉

  27. Violet Cadburry

You must have a very strong FH…do you keep him tipsy most of the time so he does your bidding? Or, is he into Tantric Travel Torture? Ha Ha, I am just winding you up. Look forward to food pictures:)

  28. I’m with you. If I have to stay in a hut I want all the intended amenities. I can just as easily live in a tent but it has to be a great tent. 😀 I can do the primitive toilet thing, too but let it be clean and approachable. Heck, I could live anywhere. LOL! Especially if the place is as beautiful as your photos!

  29. What beautiful places you are taking us, magic! 🙂
I learned one thing from your island hopping, though:
Don’t do it unless you have a husband willing to shlep two large suitcases over rocks and stones! And up the ladder to the tree house, I suppose. 😉
    Safe travels,
    M.

  30. This location looks really like Paradise…..
