One Night in Bangkok

Oriental hotel boat, corey amaro

If you have less than twenty four hours in Bangkok, and you have a swollen foot you still have many options to taste a mouthful of Bangkok. We arrived to our hotel (Legacy) to find many people waiting in the lobby, upset people who were anxious and angry at the staff due to the wait.

A man asked us, "How long have you been waiting? Isn't this maddening!"

I looked at my foot and thought, "Nope, I am very happy to sit in a clean, cool, and comfortable place."

Eventually everyone had a room, and we were upgraded. I don't know why, but was pleased to be given an upgrade simply because we had to wait in a comfortable place.

Daily life bangkok

Streets bangkok

One thing is certain… Bangkok surprised me with its instant seduction. What a city! Layers and layers of depth, richness and poverty, chic and earthy…. every walk of life passing side by side bringing constant awareness that life is not a straight line, but intricately woven together with many layers of threads.

Seamstress with their sewing machine on the street, next to an upscale chocolate shop, flower vendors, palm readers, food vendors everywhere, children and women construction workers working on the next upscale boutique hotel… narrow streets, massive overhead metro, luxury two inches away from pure grit …

I walked around in awe with the word juxtapostion going on and on in my head.

Bangkok river

Anyway if you have less than a day in Bangkok, take a tuk-tuk, go to the Oriental Hotel have a drink by the river, watch the life go by. Then take a tuk-tuk around the old town, have dinner in one of the many wonderful places and restaurants available.

Lotus bangkok

One night in Bangkok… was what I sang, French Husband was ready to stuff a lotus in my mouth, it was sick of it.

Though I sang, "I can feel an angel sliding up to me."

Whatever he moaned.

Oriental hotel pool side

This is luxurious Bangkok…Oriental hotel's pool side… I could have been a happy camper right then and there forever.

Bangkok luxury restaurant

Oh Thai food how I am going to miss you…

Note:

I'll add our video later today.

Here is one so far….

On the way to Bangkok.

Where next, China? If it’s not too late, can you get a pair of compression stockings (knee-highs) to wear on the plane to keep the swelling down (especially a concern due to the pressurized cabin)?
    Boa viagem!

  2. What a wonderful day. Is Chelsea next?
Thank you for the video; it was fun to “be there” with you.

  3. I don’t know if those stockings would be a good idea to wear on the plane. You don’t want to risk a a clot-which you can get from sitting in one position on a plane too long anyway.
Woohoo that tuk-tuk ride looked like fun!

Hey Corey I sure enjoyed riding with you and Jann on the tuk-tuk..love the vids

  5. Pretty pictures, I love your blouse. I can feel an angel slidin’ next to me!
Just for you, tell FH to plug his ears:

In this post, especially the paragraph about the wait in the hotel lobby, you reveal the secret of your happiness. I felt really touched. You have the character of an angel, a very human and very kind one.
    Warm hugs,
    Merisi

Hi Corey, I hope your foot is feeling…smaller. Ouch! Thank you for the lovely tour, I too enjoyed the ride. I would not, however, like to try to sky-dive anywhere near that pretty boat in your first picture.

  8. Glad to hear that you are feeling better. Sore foot or not, I could sit by that pool with the blue and red? orange? pillows all day.
I also love the photo of the seamstress on the street and the photo of the little girl on the boat (from yesterday) was like an embodiment of childhood – one of your best photos.

Bangkok looks a dream, and I love the open-plan taxi – so sensible in that climate! Your images and stories every day are such a treat – what a pleasure to be able to share the adventures with you. So looking forward to the next leg of the journey, and good luck with that foot!

Put your feet up in the big bustling city. Well deserved rest for you, keep conveying your messages through your words and images, while exploring your taste buds for us! New season of Spring/new approach…take care of your foot.

  12. The photos of your last posts are incredible, truly amazing and stunning! What a trip!

  13. Rhonda P.

I was singing that same song, lol.
I love the video, seems like the taxi was going fast, very fast!

Martina, compression hose help REDUCE the risk of DVT (deep vein thrombosis), as well as make walking about a bit easier if there’s less swelling (in this case, for Corey during the flight). Farmboy Husband was in fact ordered by his doctors to wear compression hose all day because of the risk of blood clotting in his legs.

  15. Definitely juxtaposition! I love the word pictures you painted!

The food looks wonderful too…thanks for sending videos…
it was fun riding with you and FH on way to airport…when are you two going to China?
take care of foot…have fun and be safe..

I love the sewing machine operator on the street. What’s he up to? A savior for travelers who split their pants after eating too much wonderful Thai food? Is he making shopping bags for travelers who find lots and lots of fabulous stuff?

  18. Cheryl ~ Casual Cottage Chic

Once I only had a night to spend in Brussels and stayed up all night to explore the city!
Where are you onto next? To see Chelsea?

  19. I have thoroughly enjoyed your visit to Thailand. Thanks for all you share. Your visit was timed so perfectly for me with my trip coming so soon. I am making notes and reservations.

  20. Sharon Penney-Morrison

I am sorry about your foot. Are you wrapping it?
Your pictures and stories are wonderful, and I feel like I am traveling with you, however the stairs would have done me in……..that snake thing again!! hahaha

Missed reading posts so am just now hearing about the injury. OW!
On our first day of three weeks in Croatia last summer, we drove to the coast from Zagreb, milled around frustrated and jet-lagged in a confusing coastal village, found our lovely hotel, stepped out to enjoy some walking and sight-seeing. Not 50 steps out of the hotel, I was looking all around and didn’t see the mere 1/2″ dip in the otherwise perfectly smooth asphalt! Down I went, and out my ankle. I took photos of it the rest of the trip, especially when it swelled, toes and all, and I couldn’t recognize it as my own foot. (Husband made a separate photo folder called “foot.”) Have fun documenting the changes, and hope it doesn’t hinder you too much.
PS. An ace bandage is now in my travel gear.

  22. Corey . . .thank you, thank you for posting the video! After following you each day, the video made it seem so real and gave a texture and flavor to your post. BTW, this exotic trip and your blog have been so educational . . .my children are loving following you too! Tell Yann thanks for his capturing it on video!
    xo

  23. I am loving your trip so much and I also love the way you deal with adversity. Thank you so much for sharing this with us.

  24. Elaine L.

I have loved all your photos and descriptions. I loved the video and hope you post more. It’s the first time I’ve heard your VOICE! I want to hear you again. People never sound the same way we imagine them. Would love to hear FH, too.

  25. It is possible that you were upgraded because you weren’t standing around complaining. Nice people sometimes get rewarded.
