Blogging makes the world smaller. It connects people, and ideas together… unbelievably, profoundly… it simply utterly amazes me everyday.
Two years ago when my father was very ill. I went home to California to be by his side. My blog took a turn as I shared more personally my time spent with him and my family. The support offered from blogging was like touching God's hand.
Irina, an Ukrainian who lives in Hong Kong was blogging too. Irina stumbled upon my blog when I was writing about my father. Her mother also was very ill. Irina found comfort in my sharing what she found hard to express, and in the many comments written by 'you' during that time.
In the sea of sadness, in the dark place of grief, having someone who understands what you are going through, who can stand by your side and listen is great comfort.
When I wrote on my blog that French Husband and I were going to go to Thailand and China. Irina invited us to visit her in Hong Kong.
Hong Kong… is a place where having a friend show you around is ideal.
Irina lives with her husband Alfred on the 43rd floor of a highrise.
Her bedroom wall has one wall that is full glass, the bed seems to jet out to the clouds.
Incredible!
Of course we have many things in common…
Her husband is Chinese, my husband is French.
She grew up behind the iron curtain, I grew up on a farm in California.
Irina loves to needle point and I have a phobia about cutting fabrics.
We both love antiques, though Irina does not like peeling, rusty, standing on its last leg sort of things… and well you know that I do.
Irina speaks English and Russian.
Alfred speaks English and Chinese.
French Husband speaks, English and French.
And I speak brocante with an accent.
Irina has not stopped feeding us… Delicious borscht soup made with fresh red beets, onions, carrots, potatoes, cabbage, dill, and mayonnaise.
Home made blinis with caviar,
Potato and Cabbage dumplings.
Oh why oh why do I love cooking, recipe sharing, eating and the one hundred and one little dishes to wash and dry, the table clothes, and talking around the table….
Irina's cooking was more than filling,
than we went out for Dim Sum!
Irina told us that Dim Sum means…."Little pieces of the heart"
You know she has given us far more than a little bit!
