Good Bye Hong Kong, Hello Yangshuo, China!

Yangshuo china

Lil River Yangshuo

On the first step off the plane, we knew we weren't in Kansas, or I should say Hong Kong, anymore. Fortunately, we had the luxury of having a hotel taxi waiting for us. Our hotel is in the center of Yangshuo over an hour away from the airport. It is far better than I expected or read about on the internet.

The rooms are wonderful, the service excellent, but more than anything they have a vegetarian restaurant. The food alone is a reason to come to Yangshuo.

I have never, and I mean never have had vegetarian food prepared as wonderful as this.

Bowls with chopsticks

Of course, I want the recipes, of course, I want to take cooking classes from the chef in the kitchen, of course, I have asked a million times in the last twenty-four hours if there are cooking classes, of course my middle name is Piglet.

Tea in china

Tea in China… oh my goodness, that is a topic all to itself.

(Note: Photos take an enormous amount of time to download. Therefore I'll add them when I can, hopefully, recipes too.)

Corey, I’m glad to learn you guys arrived safely. How’s the ankle — less painful, swelling receding? In the final photo, are those carrots arrayed to resemble Estrelitzias (Bird of Paradise flower)?
Our best vegetarian meal ever was at the most advanced student restaurant at the Culinary Institute of America, in Hyde Park, New York, ca. 20 years ago. Will tell you all about it another time!

  2. When do you get to see your baby? I bet she is as anxious as you are!
You know I love your blog, but this has been such fun being along for the ride on your travels! Thank you for sharing such intimate peeks into Asian life and the various cultures. How is the foot?

  3. So beautiful!

Corey, thanks so much for the splendid tour. I am so enjoying your journey…so much to see and learn…Fantastic.

  5. What an adventure you are having! And, you haven’t even seen Chelsea yet! I worried when I heard about the earthquake in Myanmar, but then I saw it was hundreds of miles away from you. My, the earth is active these days. But not as much as you!

  6. You need to write a book about your adventure – it really has been interesting and fun to follow you on your journey. Breath taking photos, the stories, the people, the places all I can say is WOW. Thank you for sharing it all with us.

Your journey continues to fascinate, day by day! These are lovely images. When we visited China (not including Yangshuo) we were bowled over by the incredible food – especially vegetarian, both my daughters being vegetarian. And the tea! – yes, that is another story! I look forward to your take on that.

Corey, you mean these 4 beautiful pictures are “only appetizers” !?!?!
I could feed on them for months, really, and not be starving one single second !!!
Besides, within ONE click, I can get an extra portion …
    MAGICAL !!!

  10. Glad you arrived safely. Don’t worry about the pictures, you’re on vacation!

  11. Beautiful! I am so enjoying your trip, Corey; the pictures, the words, the excitement, the passion. It is a delight to come here everyday and to be able to share in your adventure.

How exciting it is to read your blog during your travels. Fantastic!

  13. I love this blog. I love that you take us with you. I want to know more about these recipes. I’m leaning more toward vegetarian everyday. Love you! Hope your foot is better.

  14. Your photos are exquisite, especially love that last one. I could eat vegetables if they were prepared like I imagine them there. And tea, my goodness, yes, please enjoy for me. I will soon get to experience tea in Taiwan and your picture reminded me of my upcoming trip.

Your tales are mouth watering…But I fear that wherever you go afterwards, your expectations about the quality of food can never be fulfilled again… what do YOU think ? Will you ever be happy again with having bread & wine & cheese after your taste buds after been so spoilt ? 🙂
