The Great Wall of China: Can this foot do it?

Bruised foot

Nearly three weeks ago I fell on the 216 step going to our bungalow on a faraway island in Thailand. To say the least I injured the top of my foot badly. For the next five days I laid low. Then walked carefully, thoughtfully, slowly for the days up to this moment… in hopes to walk along the Great Wall.

Tomorrow we shall see….

So far it has been a miracle that I have managed to do so much considering… your good thoughts and prayers have helped me.

Thank you.

    Mon Dieu !!!
Is that your foot as it was 3 weeks ago ???
Or does it look so now ??? I hope not ! But if so, take great care of it !!!
    Thinking of you …
    xo

  2. Oh that looks so painful! I hope you get to do the walk….take care.

  3. OMG – you poor thing!
    That looks terrible!
You need someone to give you a piggy-back on the Great Wall!

  4. christine

You really must wash your feet Corey 😉
Seriously, this still looks very painful, and this is days afterwards…there must be some revolting sounding Chinese remedy in one of those shops full of dried animal parts ?
Take care, and I hope that you love the Great Wall.
    xx C

  5. LibbyWNZ

If you’re not already wearing one I’d like to recommend a firm compression bandage – that foot needs all the support it can get!!! Loving being a part of your adventures.

  6. Good heavens! Have you had it xrayed? Have one of those great Chinese specialists put some sort of potion on it. I was reading the autobiography of Jane Fonda and she hurt her foot and some sort of crystanthium compress on it and it really took the swelling down. Some of that Eastern medicine is really great.

  7. I hope it will be better soon and you can manage the wall tomorrow….

  8. jend’isére

This soon to be bad memory has slowed you down to soak in deeper the wonderful memories you have shared. Most would have missed the details while running around…though you wouldn’t. Even if those Chinese apothacaries do not carry your magic potion, they are interesting for photo-opp.

  9. jend’isére

PS. Much prefer photos of Chinese food over Chinese foot!

  10. Oh, Corey, you poor dear!
    Saying prayers for you.

  11. I believe they have doctors in Asia and you should probably find one. You may have broken something and be doing more damage walking around on it. Think of it as an opportunity to discover Eastern medicine. You’ve loved everything else about your Asian vacation. Maybe the slip on the step was just your chance to discover acupuncture or feng shui for the foot, or something else I don’t know about yet.

  12. Ouch, Corey, that looks really painful. I’m just amazed now at how much you’ve done with that sore foot. I do hope you can find a good doctor in Beijing (assume that’s where you are now?) to speed up the recovery. And I so hope for your sake that you’re able to get up to the Great Wall – it’s a truly wonderful experience. You can just stand there and soak it in – let the others do the walking.
All my best wishes for that poor foot xo

  13. OMG, Corey. I showed this photo to A and he’s soooooo worried ( and me too)! He said you should see a doctor. I wished while you were here I looked for Epsom salt for your foot bath … darn, I’m so slow! Does it hurt? If it does maybe you should see a chinese doctor?

  14. If that is still how your foot looks today, it resembles my foot that I BROKE 2 years ago. Please be careful and elevate as much as possible. First ice and then heat would be great on alternate basis. Ice may be hard to come by for you where you are. Keep safe. I so enjoy the beautiful pictures.

  15. you poor darling…. I would say NO but I know that this foot here CAN… 🙂
I often hurt my feet (and much else) but it takes a VERY brave woman to walk with such a hurt foot! God bless you – and PLEASE take utmost care – Hero Husband says ‘if she CAN walk at all, she MUST see the wall’…. so take it from him – you WILL do it! 🙂

  16. I would get that foot checked my darling
    It looks awful
How brave you are my sweet friend
    I love you
Please take very good care of yourself and your foot.
    I love you
    Jeanne

  17. 🙂
1st prize of the day for this quote!
and your former comment is beautiful too!! You have a very interesting and thought-worthy way of thinking, one I follow too but all the more appreciate in my friends…
    thank you!

  18. Irina; good idea – hopefully Corey can find some healing salt… and hopefully she used Arnica globuli when it happened.

  19. only with the Grace of God have you been getting by with a foot that looks like that….He is gonna get you through the rest of this trip…I too have fractured bones in my foot, and it was the week I was leaving for an 11 day trip to Italy, it didn’t stop me…
But please get it checked when you get home…just to make sure it is healing properly, and that you have caused no further damage to it…
    Loving this trip through China…

  20. Wow, you really hurt your foot! I’ve heard eating fresh pineapple helps swelling and bruising…something about the acids or enzymes in it that help break up the bruises and thus the swelling. Can you get your hands on a pineapple?

  21. Are you sure you didn’t break something? Maybe you should see another dr.

  22. Prayers are being lifted up.

  23. Oh My Corey!!!!! Have you had an X ray?
    I am so sorry!!!!!

  24. Well, isn’t it a foot of a saint statue found at a brocante? ;-).
But seriously, please look after yourself. It doesn’t look good. I will echo the voices that commented here before me – are you sure it’s not broken?
Sending you best wishes and speedy recovery.

  25. OMG , you are one brave girl Corey!
The piggy- back on idea to the wall- sounds good.
    Please see a doctor!

  26. My gosh that looks painful!! Hope it heals soon… X

  27. OUCH!!!! See a doctor! It looks awful!

  28. Corey, I think it would be wise to go to a doctor and get that foot seen about. You may have a broken bone there. Poor thing having to deal with that on a trip of a lifetime. I do hope you go to the doctor and see what the problem is. I hope its nothing but better safe than sorry.

  29. Oh Corey, sweet kisses
    of healing to your foot.
You can do it! xo jody

  30. Corey, I know exactly what you are going through. Unfortunately these things take a lot of time… and the more you are on your foot, the longer it takes to heal.
A similar accident happened to me when we were in Provence at the beginning of our trip. I thought that was it, but then I experienced “my French miracle” and was able to carry on to the end.
Just pace yourself, wear shoes with a good support, and elevate your foot whenever possible.
    Bonne chance!

  31. Hi MN
It is my foot today. It only turn B&B recently.
Swelling is down. Walking improves everyday.

  32. can’t even imagine how you have managed these past weeks…..be careful on that Great Wall!!!!

  33. Corey- I too have been travelling along with you and assumed though you hurt your foot, that it was coming along and you were just a bit battered. But THAT foot needs attention as everyone else has suggested. Three weeks in, it shouldn’t still look like that and I would be concerned with it healing improperly and needing more complicated “intervention” if left as is. You might have to take a slight detour but I feel certain you will get to The Great Wall whether walking, hopping w/ crutches or rolling. I know a little about being stubborn and determined but it’s time to take care of yourself so you can enjoy the rest of your trip. Godspeed and good luck, be well and safe in the rest of your travels. Peace and blessings to you, Yann & Chelsea.

  34. c-are you entirely sure you did not break something in there SO MANY TINY BONES in the foot….thinking of you and you have come this far…i see THE WALL Walk happening….peace be with you….good health to you and all whom you love and most urgently speedy healing with the foot.-g

  35. Yikes! Corey!! Do you keep it wrapped? You have already received some good advice in the previous comments. Best to you. I will keep you in my thoughts! Diane

  36. Oh my, I had no idea it was so bad! Take it easy today, and ice it. I hope you can do the wall tomorrow, but don’t push yourself if you can’t. My thoughts are with you.

  37. Oh, Corey, sending prayers your way. I’m surprised that it is just now turning black and blue (as you commented to Marie-Noelle)–maybe because the swelling is just going down? Take care; you don’t want to end up with a permanent injury for lack of medical care. Sending up a special prayer to the Great Physician.

  38. I can’t believe that foot has carried you all over Asia. It’s painful just looking at it. I agree with all the others who think a visit to the doctor would be a very good idea. You are an unbelievable trooper, and you will see everything, but please stop and have your foot looked at.

  39. OMG Corey!!! that photo brought a tear to my eye! Stop giving to all of us today, get to a doctor, please. Let us read a doctor’s report tomorrow! Are there 24 hour clinics open? xo

  40. PLEASE go see a Doctor about this. Your bruising is quite severe and like others have pointed out, there are many small bones in a foot. You probably should get xrays too. Even if it is feeling better, it is of concern. I work for physicians and I know that is what they would tell you to do.(please)

  41. C – fyi, I fell down a bunch of steep steps years back and had swelling similar to yours, but not the bruising you have. I went and had it x-rayed, nothing broken, just severely sprained. I don’t want to be a downer here, but it took almost a year for the swelling and pain to completely go away. You probably need to find out if something is broken. I hope and pray that you find some comfort to enjoy the rest of your trip and cherished time with your daughter. xo

  42. Corey you must have a high tolorance to pain! Feet are so precious! Please get a Chinese remedy or x-ray before the Great Wall…love being with you on this journey.

  43. Dear Corey, I hope you Mom doesen’t see that photo….you could be in big trouble! 🙂
So love all your posts! I am a tea educator and dream of a visit to China….take good care! Perhaps a cane? Limping is bad for the back.

  44. Your foot is the most painful looking foot I have ever seen – I do believe you when you say it gets better every day but that only tells me it must have been horrendous when it happened.
I agree with those who say a visit to a Chinese practitioner might be useful and we all know it would be of interest. I wish I had said that was what I wanted to see when you were asking… is it too late? To ask for a phote of one? Say, perhaps of one examining your foot? Or of one selling you a potion to apply for ease of pain? That’s a picture I would request…

  45. OMG! Corey – you are a real trooper! At least the bruising means that it is healing, but if you have pain when you get home, maybe you should have it looked at. Soft tissue injuries can be very painful; hopefully you didn’t fracture or break any bones in your foot.
Enjoy the rest of your trip. You remind me of my mother – awesome, strong women who just get on with it and don’t complain! My mom just had back surgery a week ago and I can’t believe how well she is doing – she is my inspiration! You are too! You go girl and enjoy that walk on the Great Wall! xxxxx

  46. Rebecca from the pacific northwest

Reminds me of my similar-looking foot on vacation in Croatia, and the hindrances that caused. (Also the creepy fascination with a foot that looked like Somebody Else’s Foot on MY ankle!)
Enjoy the wall. Do what you can.

  47. Investigate some Chinese herbals and accupuncture before you hit the trail…and may the force be with you!

  48. Rebecca from the pacific northwest

PS. I notice you didn’t put your “Corey Amaro” watermark on the foot photo — guessing you’re not concerned that someone might pluck that off your site and reuse it without permission.

  49. The Great Wall via piggy back. Corey, your foot looks terrible. Have you been able to wear shoes on that foot?

  50. Oh Corey, your poor foot! Maybe French Husband should carry you on the Great Wall 🙂

  51. Stephanie M

    Corey
I don’t know how you have managed these past 3 wks. I broke the navicular bone and had a similar sprain (but not as much bruising) and was on a walker for 4 weeks and a walking cast off and on for nearly 6 mos! So I hope that you walk the wall and get to a Dr shortly afterwards. The cast made walking so much easier and less painful. That and a daily dose of Advil. Good luck and glad to hear that you have been able to see so much in spite of your injury.

  52. Oh dear, dear Corey! I will say a prayer for you right now. I want you to totally enjoy the Great Wall without a thought of pain. I do hope by now it looks worse than it feels.

  53. OWWWWW !! My feet hurt just looking at yours ! Go easy on the wall…Will be thinking of you. Lots of love

  54. Brother Mathew

Get a cane made from a tree in China. You can use it to scale the Great Wall and it will be a great sovenir. A souvenir that will not take up precious luggage space! Hang in there; that foot is banged up alright.

  55. Oh Corey, that does not look good! Have you had acupuncture for it?? Sending lots of healing vibes your way..
    Stacey

  56. OUCH! That foot of yours looks very bad…as in pain. You must be a trooper to have gone on the adventure you have. Oh…hopefully your foot will hold out for the great wall. I think you need to see a doctor.

  57. oh my goodness Corey. I never in my life imagined that your foot was that bad. you are a true traveling trooper. sending you thoughts and prayers that you have/had a wonderful day on the Great Wall. 🙂

  58. Sending prayers and good wishes. Enjoy the Great Wall and all the lasting memories you are creating.

  59. Brave, brave girl. Your story is so wonderful, your daughter amazing, all the you touch seems to turn to gold. You are a fabulous photographer and a vivid storyteller. Your family so touchingly close. It gives me pause to see how well you have brought up your children, to be so self reliant and confident.

  60. Victoria Ramos

Looks like a very severe sprain….with the blood pooling down toward your toes and swelling. Being a severe soccer mom – I know that sprains like that take almost longer to heal than a break…especially if you weren’t able to put it in ice baths immediately after the injury (to stop the swelling/bruising/bleeding). And sprains look so nasty too! I agree with Brother Matthew and the cane idea….can’t miss the Great Wall!
Take care….and see a physician upon your return….or a healer on your travels!

  61. Corey, PLEASE see a doctor! Last year I fell on a trip to Provence. My foot didn’t look as bad as yours and I had a sprain plus had chipped a bone in my ankle. With the help of a brace and crutches I was able to get around very well and enjoy the rest of my trip. I’m really concerned about that foot and you — you certainly are a trouper!

  62. I made it up part of the Great Wall in poor condition a few years ago–you don’t have to hike the whole thing but you should go and walk a piece of it–they can take you up to part of it and you can walk the easier stretches, even if just a bit–it will be worth it. You could aso see a doctor in Beijing and get a foot treatment–the Western medicine is very cheap and they have all sorts of wraps and balms and Eastern treatments that could really help and cost less than a copay to an American doctor. It is actually a really interesting a cool experience and I feel like you are missing out if you have a legitimate reason to see an Eastern medicine clinic/doctor and don’t do it. There are English speaking doctors or you can have a local take you to one of the clinics where they can have a look and probably treat it. It would take a few hours but appts in advance not necessary. I was happily surprised many times by the great care and results I saw.

  63. Wow..I agree a doctor should look at that. In the meantime….LOTS of ice, and if you can get it…a poultice of the herb comfrey (leaves). You’re in my prayers!

  64. Corey….for heavens sake! I would have never put my foot on there. Take care of it. Love Mom

  65. There is no doubt in my mind that you will do it. Even if Yann and Chelsea have to carry you!

  66. joanne nixon

    i second this….lol

  67. Yikes! You are a trooper to keep going on a foot like that! I hope you get to see the Wall, but the Great Wall has been there a long long time and will most likely be there for a long time to come, while you only have the one right foot. Ouch! Good luck!

  68. Kimberly

Okay my first thought was Holy Cow! Ouch! I can see why you have been in so much pain. My goodness I will say a prayer for you tonight. Blessings, Kimberly

  69. I’ve lost my joy after seeing your foot. It needs looking after. Seriously.

  70. I said good luck on your post on Facebook without seeing the photo. Ouch! I agree with everyone. Have it looked at. The long plane ride home will not be good with all that swelling. But you can go part way up the Great Wall and still have an awesome experience.

  71. Bethany Marco

Totally Gross – why this picture exactly? Don’t you get enough attention as it is?

  72. Can Chelsea learn to say “wheelchair” in Mandarin, quick? I assume you could always visit the Wall that way.

  73. Sheesh, it IS Corey’s blog — WTF else were you expecting???
If you don’t like it, just go away and let the rest of us (who are interested) enjoy her posts in peace.
SHOO, SCAT, SCRAM, you unempathetic little troll (who’s too cowardly even to provide a URL — it figures)!

  74. OMG Corey, you poor thing, your foot looks terrible and I guess very sore. I agree with folk on here, go see a Chinese doctor, I have heard they work wonders. I really really hope you make it to the Great Wall. Take care, and again please go see a doctor, you can;t fly home with a foot in that condition, def. not good for you.

  75. Tiger balm does great things, but I would say Doc as soon as poss after a few steps only on the Wall…:^) All the very best Corey.

  76. Oh my goodness! Good thoughts going your way.
Take care of yourself. Crutches, cane, doctor maybe? Oh and some large hiking boots if you do go –

  77. good lord – that looks so very painful!! I’d be willing to bet something is broken in there. you are a serious big- girl to traipse around on such a big boo- boo! great luck on the great wall!

  78. Ana María

    Corey,
Please listen to all of us who care for you and go see a doctor asap! I too have a high threshold of pain. Three days before my grandson was born, I fell and dislocated my elbow. At the hospital all the attention was on my arm and no one looked at my foot. By the time my daughter went into labor my foot looked like yours, but we were all focusing on her. After the baby was born, I finally had a doctor take a look at it. Of course it was fractured. I had a cast on for four weeks, went to therapy, and two years have passed, but I’ve havent been able to walk normally on that foot again. Had to get rid of all my shoes and only wear wide crocs and tennis shoes now.
Moral of my story: PLEASE go see a doctor!
    Your friend from Miami,
    Ana María

  79. Corey,
I’m so sorry to see your foot. It must hurt a lot. I never imagined that it was this blue.
If you’re going to be in China longer, go see a doctor please. Not the Chinese herbal kind. You need a chinese doctor who practices western medicine (there are plenty of excellent ones in China). It’s most likely a sprain, but there may be a fracture. If you were in the US, you’d get an x-ray stat in the ER stat. You will likely need an x-ray. You might need crutches or some type of air shoes to put off the weight on that foot and to maximize the best long term outcome. If you must, go see the Wall. Then see a doctor. Chinese doctors are very smart and very well trained. If you don’t know any good ones, go to one that’s affiliated with a university/teaching hospital. Do not be afraid.
At night elevate your foot to decrease the inflammation. Some anti-inflammatory (NSAIDs) meds, like naproxen or ibuprofen will help too.
    I hope you feel better.
Your friend, the MD from DC

  80. PS Like this one near Beijing? Ideally you want to be seen by an orthopedic specialist.
    http://www.phbjmu.edu.cn/english/

  81. Denise Moulun-Pasek

    Corey,
It must have looked pretty bad three weeks ago… Have you wrapped it?
You can do the Great Wall, and if you need to stop and be still, I’m sure that will be a great experience too.
    Courage!

  82. I agree with Amylia Grace. I’ll bet there is an Eastern medicine treatment that will make you feel a lot better. You are in the right place to find it.
Thank you so much for taking us along on your wonderful journey. Your photos are stunning and your descriptions very heartfelt and interesting. I look forward to seeing what you are doing every day.

  83. Ouchies!! I hope it heals soon.
Safe travels and thank you for taking us along with you on your journeys.

  84. Corey, You are one tough mama, not letting anything stop you enjoying your travels.
    Even a bruised foot.
    which in fact
    . . . . . is broken!
(But you know that, don’t you?)
Anyway you’ve come this far – just keep going.

  85. Hang in there, but definitely go to the Great Wall. I was there 3 weeks ago and it was amazing. Even if you need to take it easy, just seeing part of it will be worth it. I saw several people walking with canes, there are some sections that relatively easier or places that have gondolas. Those sections are near Beijing. Good luck!

  86. OMG Corey! Your foot looks just like mine this past winter when I twisted my ankle and went down. I FEEL for you!! I can’t even imagine having to do a lot of walking on that foot and especially when you’re on vacation…you poor thing! Now I have to read your latest post to see how you did. I hope your day has been a good one…or is going to be a good one 😉
    Maura 🙂

  87. By seeing it, it hurts me so much . You are very brave

  88. Oh my GOODNESS! I am enjoying reading of your adventures, and opened up the Great Wall post and then scrolled down to see your FOOT! It is amazing to me that you went a mile or two on the Wall, with that painful foot!! You are a trooper and I tip my hat to you.
But I echo concerns of others and say I hope you will get xrays!!
    🙂
    Tamara

  89. Ok…this is not good!! I am a nurse, well a retired nurse, and your foot needs to be in something that keeps it from bending, like a plastic boot. There are many bones in your foot and one or more could be fractured. I will be glad when you get home and get some medical advice. Use ice if you can find it for 20″ at a time, several times when you are resting.
    love,Sharon
