Shopping and Eating in Shanghai

China suzhou canal

The very first thing Chelsea and I did after hugging and laughing, was talk and talk about this and that and the other.

Isn't that how it is when you first see someone you love? No matter where you are you, first need to catch up, soak in the moment, reconnect… then you can enter into the reality of where you are: In our case China.

Hersheys chocoate

The very next thing we did was to declare, we were hungry.

Food, oh the comfort.

We headed towards one of the few remaining neighborhoods that hasn't been engulfed by a massive skyscraper.

Community life is evident on each inch of sidewalk.

I pointed, "Is that a bicyclist with a man sitting on top of a heap of Hershey's chocolate boxes?"

"We have a way of following our noses!" Chelsea laughed.

Jack fruit juice

We had fresh sugar cane juice.

The street vendors peel the giant stalks, then squeeze it fresh.

Delicious.

Street food vendor china

Nearby on a wooden table a man made rice flour sesame seed flat bread. The interior had a sesame seed filling. The flat bread is cooked inside a large tiled, kilm like oven.

Standing side by side with Chelsea, on a small street in Shanghai; with the first sip of fresh sugar cane juice and a bite of hot-from-the-oven, sesame flat bread, I knew it was worth the journey back to China.

Shanghai style

I asked Chelsea if she had a plan of action for the next two weeks…

"Eat and shop?" she said with her mouth full.

"Now shopping that is something Daddy won't miss out on…" I beamed,

and Chelsea added, "And we don't want him to feel left out!"

I felt like I was sixteen at that moment. Food, shopping and hanging out with a girlfriend.

Later in the evening, when we arrived at the hotel, a message from French Husband was waiting for us…

Yann's finger

He mangled his finger while putting the Mosquito (his ULM plane) back in the hangar.

It is torn up badly.

Poor left handed guy.

It almost made shopping feel disrespectful.

Fortunately, he is not alone, he is staying with our dear friends Nathalie and Jean Bernard at La Madone.

Note:

Thank you to the readers who caught and corrected my mislabeled fruit error this morning.

Not Jack Fruit, but Sugar Cane.

xx

  1. For a minute there I thought that was your finger. Be careful!

  2. Enjoy, enjoy, enjoy your time with Chelsea. It is such a gift.
Now, on to your next adventure.

  3. Corey – those are sugar canes not jack fruit. The freshly squeezed sugar cane juice is out of this world.

Poor French Husband. I hope he can survive without you. Enjoy your shopping and adventures with Chelsea. You are lucky to have such a great mother- daughter relationship.

  5. Oh no, hope he mends quickly, he’s a south paw too. I’m sure it makes him feel better to see his girls having such a good time together. Have fun catching up, eating, and shopping!

  6. Yes! You are there! 😀 I swim in emotions when I look at your photos.
That jack fruit looks a lot like sugar cane from this end.
I know you’re loving it, but I HAVE to say “Have fun!”

Thank you for sharing your trip to China, it’s been wonderful tagging along 🙂
Pretty sure those are sugar cane stalks, though.

  8. What does Jackfruit taste like? The filled bread sounds divine, hot out of the oven. I’m happy to be back in China so soon! Were are you taking us next?:)

Mother and daughter having a ball!
My Mom met me at the airport the day before my trip to Paris. We checked into the hotel in Chicago visited, had a fabulous lunch and hung out. Then, she hung out with my friends that night at dinner, they love her!
I know what you mean, Corey, there is nothing like it.

  14. Tongue in Cheek

    Hi Connie,
Somewhere between our hotel this morning and the other side of the Bund, I thought out loud…”Oh my god, that juice wasn’t jack fruit,it was sugar cane!” Chelsea looked at me like I was losing my mind,”What are you talking about?”
When I told her I had mis labeled the juice she said, “Well your readers will have correcting you!”
Hello Ding Dong Me! I am off to change my error.
Thanks for letting me know that Tongue in Cheek readers read what I write, right or wrong. 🙂

  15. Following Hershey boxes! One thing is guaranteed, when you and Chelsea get together there is lots of laughter.
Poor Yann! My Dad had to have stitches in his wrist after his remote control model airplane got him. He had brought the plane in for a landing, thought the prop was done rotating-but it wasn’t.

  16. So sorry to hear that FH has injured his hand–wishing him quick healing.
Enjoy this time with Chelsea. Eat and shop to your heart’s delight!

  20. Ana Maria

    Hi Corey!
I’m so glad you decided to go back to China with Chelsea! It will be a totally different trip this time – a mother/daughter trip, how wonderful!
I’m sorry I didn’t get to your blog earlier today. As probably your only born-in-Cuba (albeit a proud US Citizen for over 50 years!), I would have loved to shout out, “Corey, that’s sugar cane!”. In Spanish it’s called “guarapo”. I’m sad to say I don’t like it; I also don’t like mango! (How crazy is that for someone born in the tropics?)
Sadly, communism has so destroyed my lovely homeland, once the sugar bowl of the world, that the people don’t even have sugar at home any more, it’s all shipped out and saved for tourists, the people are only allowed a few ounces a month per their food rationing card.
But well, there have been miracles in other once-communist countries, and we must pray for a miracle there too.
I have a lovely embroidered pillow that says, “Moms make memories” – that’s what you’re doing now, making memories that will last a lifetime! Enjoy!

  21. Gretchen Baldauf

So sorry to hear about Yann’s injury! However, La Madone is a lovely place to recover and I think Nathalie and Jean Bernard will take such good care of him. Enjoy your stay in China!

  22. Oh, you lucky duck!!
Have fun with your BFF! Enjoy every moment.

  23. MMM! Sugar cane juice sounds good! Poor Uncle Yoyo! I hope his finger feels better soon!

  24. I almost felt sorry for FH till you said where he is being pampered this week. Such a rough recovery! No, seriously I hope he heals quickly. That has got to hurt!
Sugar cane juice…I’ve never heard of such thing but would love to try it.
You and Chelsea enjoy your time together!

  25. Cheryl ~ Casual Cottage Chic

Oh, LA MADONE…FH is going to be spoiled! Shopping and eating ~ two of the best things in life (except, well….we can’t mention that “other” best thing 😉
    Have fun!!

  26. One foot, one finger – the tall for going to China :-). Wonder if Marco Polo injured any limbs? Thank you for more photos of life in China and all the best to Yann for a quick recovery.

  27. Poor FH – he’ll do anything to get you back. Enjoy your treck….sleep in….eat fresh food…..shop….hit the night spots (for Chelsie of course) and be safe.
