Doing the Girl Thing

Traveling light is the norm these days considering one is only allowed to take forty five pounds in their suitcase. When Chelsea came to China she had to remove twenty two extra pounds or pay four hundred and forty extra dollars for her overweight suitcase (Talk about a dyslexic tongue twister!) Hence, the heaviest things stayed in France, coming back home with me that day..

Chelsea took two pairs of shoes.

When I arrived in China we had ever intention to travel… until I looked at her feet and my not so strong foot. You see I noticed a young woman who had spent months studying ten to five everyday.

Also I re-twisted my foot on the airplane trying to leap over two passengers as I tried to go to the bathroom (I know, I know I should have asked for a aisle seat…. but the window seat tempted me as we were going to fly over Russia, Kazakhstan and China.) Re twisting my foot reminded me to take it slow.

Arriving in China I sensed my daughter needed some, "Girl Time". We are not girly girls,  shopping is something we rarely do, let alone a pampering spa day.

Shopping for new shoes was the first thing on the list.

Shanghai is also known for tailors who can make a three piece cashmere custom-made suit for under seventy dollars. We justified our decision to shop and spa in Shanghai on the fact that she has an internship for six months as soon as she returns home.

Shopping in Shanghai and sightseeing became our plan, and to spice it up to take some photos as I mentioned the other day to you.

Coffee in china

 The day started with coffee.

Yes coffee. China makes coffee the way coffee should me made.

I am a tea drinker, coffee does not seduce me, but then I never knew the seduction that China would have over me.

Billboard in china

A giant billboard in Shanghai (five floors high) depicting the decadence of makeup.

Chinese women tend to like sparkles, sparkles on everything, I heard it is called the Manga style.

  Colors china spring

The color feast splashes not only on the billboard, spring has sprung on things that do not need water, nor sunshine.

Happy Colors!

…. to be continued we are off to the tailor for that (those) suits…..

  1. I see you travel the way I love…listening to one’s heart(or feet) of the day…nothing etched in stone.
The permission to change and enjoy the moment.

  2. I can hardly wait to see you new loot! Hope your luggage won’t be over-weight.
I’m nearly done writing my talk, and compiling my PowerPoint slide show to illustrate it, for the conference in Paris next month. With Corey’s permission, I’d love to include a couple of her fabulous slides of the Princeton, California, Holy Ghost festa (because one of the poems I’m discussing is about Holy Ghost queens in California!). Please, Corey, may I? I promise to give you proper attribution. They’re the first two at:

  3. “…your new loot…” (well, it IS after 11 PM here, and I’ve been working hard).

  4. That’s what travel is for – make a plan and then adjust. Shopping, spa’ing, walking and sightseeing – it all works for me as long as the camera is at the ready with the battery loaded.
Chelsea looks wonderful. I’d like to get a sideview glimpse of those shoes.

  5. Looks like you are having fun!
I’m so glad for you. Maybe the sore foot was there for a reason. Slow down and smell the roses!

  6. I hope your foot heals well my darling.
    I love you
I love all you share. Say hi to Chelsea.
    Love Jeanne

  7. Oh, have fun! I just returned from China a few months ago and bought a few suits at the Silk Market … they have worn beautifully. I wish I would have been able to start my professional wardrobe with a trip to Shanghai for great business clothes. Enjoy the spas … such a bargain. And, visit Sharon’s on the 4th floor of the Pearl Market, amazing deals and Chelsea needs some pearls to go with the suits.

  8. Well, try traveling when you “are” a girly girl. It’s painful. I’m still trying to live the less is best and I just can’t do it.
Love these images, today, as well.
    Having my coffee reading this….

  9. Love the shoes!

  10. Have fun with your best girl, she looks fantastic in her new shoes! You don’t have to be a girly girl to enjoy a day with your mother, hope you two have a blast! Can’t wait to see you two in those suits.

  11. I can’t wait to see Chelsea’s suits! 🙂 Also, the girl on the billboard has a lot of makeup on. Her nails are very long! But i kinda like it. I would never wear makeup like that though.

  12. Your poor foot! A girls day out…fun. Hope those new shoes don’t weigh down the suitcase! Can’t wait to see more.

  13. Corey, I had to laugh at this post because I was up with Amanda until the wee hours of this morning, removing things from her carry-on as 13 lbs. is the limit and her small suitcase was weighing in at about 20 lbs. She didn’t want to check any luggage, preferring to travel very light with just one carry-on and a purse, but after several hours of deciding what could go and what could stay, she said to heck with it and decided to check the luggage so she wouldn’t be limited to only 13 lbs.
And thank you again for all your help with the hotel recommendation. She was able to secure a reservation for 6 or 7 nights there and I know she will have the time of her life!!! All my thanks and best wishes! I hope you and Chelsea have a BLAST! How I wish I could have gone with my Amanda!!
    All my best, Donna

  14. By all means, girls. Yes, goodness, shop for shoes and swatch yourselves in cashmere and just RELAX. You’ve been busy, Chelsea has been busy, and you both DESERVE the rest, the treat, the unwinding.
Can’t wait to see more of those shoes – and those suits!

  15. ooooohhhhh that sounds like fun! Chelsea’s shoes are so cute.

  16. I’ve never been able to stay in high heels for a long time. My admiration for Chelsea for being able to walk around Shanghai in the three storey shoes :-).

  17. Be careful with that foot! I am so so wanting a 3 piece classic hand made tailored suit!
