The future is following those we love

Collage china shanghai

Snapshots from Shanghai while walking around with Chelsea… what we saw:

Top to bottom:

Candied cherries on a stick with a baby in pink in the background.

Stained blue glass in a tea garden.

Hand made basket cricket cages.

Enormous red silk lanterns.

Sugar cane stalk with a basket of red tomatoes.

Pharmacy jars with herb teas and things.

Shanghai Streets

Chelsea's snapshots:

A little boy in the crowd.

Stylish women at the fabric market.

A woman buying fresh tea from a street vendor.

A pineapple vendor who will cut and carve a piece when bought.

Mother crossing the street.

Billboard and yellow taxi.

What I have noticed on this trip while hanging out with my daughter is that we often forget to take photos while talking, laughing and yes, eating take over! Moreso we are told "NO PHOTOS" inside of the market places.

Taking photos on the streets is not my cup of tea, and Chelsea is the queen of wide angle shots, while I prefer closeups.

More of those differences to come.

Manicure

Chelsea's personal photo of her freshly manicured hand.

I dared to have mine painted mauve brown…

The color red has become Chelsea's favorite… China has had a good effect on her!

On this day three years ago my father passed away. Three years…. hard to believe.

Yesterday, Chelsea said, "Mom did you ever think three years ago that you would be in Shanghai shopping with me?"

"Never." I smiled.

And then just like that I saw my dad in my inner eye, laughing and leaning in saying to me, "Oh *little goat legs" how could you say that… you are/were always on the go."

With that tears welled up in my eyes, and I grabbed my daughter's hand letting her lead the way.

The future is following those we love, while passing on our love to the ones ahead of us.

* Goat Legs: I do not know how to write the Portuguese expression in Portuguese but my father and mother (who spoke Portuguese) have often called me, "Goat Legs" which means "One on the go, or one that cannot sit still". My mother and father have teasingly called me that for many, many years.

  1. Beautiful! I love your reds. We have those tulip trees in Japan, too. I believe they are a type of magnolia. I love the purple ones.

Oh, that made my heart sigh. Such lovely thoughts. My father died on the same day in 2000. And my mom just 29 days later. It seems so long ago and like yesterday. Hugs. xox

People in motion complement the still life compositions through various angles, dreams and perspectives. Such a pair you are…creating harmonious ying/yang photography with love!

  5. The future is following those we love, and remember those that love us as well.

  6. Nice to see the world through Chelsea’s eyes.
Sending you a virtual hug on the sad anniversary.

Many time Corey you say just what I need to hear, my thoughts and affection are with you and your family this day; enjoy every moment!

  8. Thinking of you Corey, on this day.
Glad you girls are having fun.
    Love the photos.

“NO PHOTOS inside of the market places.” Any idea why? Have you encountered that policy elsewhere?
Corey, when I was looking over your June 2008 Princeton festa photos again last night — thinking of incorporating a few more in the PowerPoint display for my talk, with your permission and with full attribution, for course! — I was wondering if that was when your father died. I didn’t know the exact date, because I didn’t discover your blog until the following year. I know you’ll always miss him (I still miss my dad after nearly 15 years), but am sure he was proud of your adventuresome nature!

    “…OF course…”

Did you know that at the Minnesota State Fair you can get just about anything to eat on a stick – including DEEP FRIED SNICKERS BARS?
Yeech. I’ll take the candied cherries on a stick any day! Loving your shots of the mother-daughter time.

I love your photo/word windows into China and life.
This is the best: “With that tears welled up in my eyes, and I grabbed my daughter’s hand letting her lead the way.”
    Generation on generation of interconnection.

  16. “goat legs” on the go! how endearing.
Thank you for all the sharing and the gorgeous photo. Tea in the sack, pineapples candied cherries so rich in exerperiences!

  17. My grown children still talk of tiny candied crab apples on a stick. They ate them all over China when we were there in the 80’s. I’m so happy 3 years later as you remember your father you are in different place (literally and emotionally). I don’t believe one ever stops thinking of the passing years. June will mark the 50th year of my own father’s passing. Enjoy this time with your dear daughter.

God bless you, Corey. You are the prettiest goat legs, I’ve ever seen!
This was beautiful and I know your Dad is smiling down on you right now!
    You are living the life!

  19. I love your nickname from your dad “Goat Legs”. Your tender stories always bring tears to my eyes and make me run home to soak up my parents’ time and love.
Have a lovely day today. Thank you for the beautiful words and photos.

    “PERNAS DA CABRA”
I emailed a friend who was born/raised on Terceira island in the Azores, who replied that “pernas da cabra” (“Goat legs”) is indeed an expression there. He added that “Goats jump over walls and move in very difficult spots, like cliffs, and they used to semi-tie them with two pieces of rope (arm-leg/ arm-leg) to prevent them to escape from the “cerrados” (small stone-walled pasture-like enclosures). So [her parents meant] she was always jumping and running or so.”

  21. Little goat legs…LOVE. IT. Having goats in our pasture I have to say that is an accurate nickname for one who gets into everything…Love to you and your girl as she leads the way.

    FROM
“Your guide to Chinese Astrology CHINESE ZODIAC”
    GOAT :
“The Goat symbolizes such character traits as creativity, intelligence, dependability, and calmness. Comfortable being alone to ponder the workings of their inner minds, Goats enjoy being part of a group, but prefer the sidelines rather than the center. Their nurturing personality makes Goats excellent care-givers. They’re quite and reserved because they spend much time absorbed in their thoughts.
    … / …
When traveling or seeking entertainment, Goats prefer groups or venues that hold many people. Goats spend money on fashions that give them a first class appearance. Although Goats enjoy spending money on the finer things in life, they are not snobbish.”

Dear Corey, Thanks so much, I needed to hear that…My father has been gone 4 years this month, I miss his little names for me too. I like “The future is in following your loved ones”…I often see my dads expressions in my sons!
