Backyard Bedroom

Backyard outdoor bedroom

Years ago my mom added a twin bed to her backyard.

An over sized umbrella became the canopy,

an old peeling chair a nightstand.

Nearby she has a cement table with chairs… a dining room?

My mom has extend her house, taken outdoor living to the next level.

Why take a nap on a lawn chair when a real bed will do.

I would easily sleep out there at night if there weren't a million, and I mean a million mosquitoes!

  1. Love the atmosphere you mum has created and I think that I will borrow the lemonade stand idea for my backyard in the Gers…

I remember your mom’s garden bed – such serenity!
The perfect place for quiet repose on a summer day.

  3. Love the outside bed but was thinking do they not have mosquitoes like us? LOL!! No outside sleeping here…you would be eaten alive!

I love the idea, but what is she using for a matress? I have a horrible time keeping my 7 ft long pad dry on my porch swing and my porch is covered. Would love to know her secret. Thanks!

  5. you must have long spells of rainless and sunny days to be able to put a real bed outside! great idea but honestly, I couldn’t live through a night with all the moscitos! I only ‘met’ these zillions of beasts during a stay in Florida and I still shudder thinking back….
    Lovely atmosphere!!!
Our additional LIVING SPACE is our veranda (conservatory, winter garden, serre), a place with real plants and flowers, a stone bench, stone pillars, a table for 2-4, woven fauteuils, lights, sun shade – and glass panels all around… we live outside/inside from April to at least end of October and it’s heaven.
    LOVE your posts, Corey.

  6. OMG you are SO cut from the same cloth as your mom…did you discuss the B and B with her yet? I plan to be her first customer:)

Your mother is just too cool – thanks for sharing so much that is beautiful in her life and yours!

Your mom’s home has very welcoming feel. The bed must be very popular with the grandkids 🙂

I’d love an outside bed, but we in Australia also have to fight off the mosquitoes, flies and I am sure my dogs would end up lying on it…so then I wouldn’t.
p.s. thank you Corey for the link re the beverage dispenser.

  10. How about a mosquito net around the bed? It would also keep bees and other insects out during an afternoon nap. It could be a mosquito net made of old lace to add to the romantic look.

Grab a book and feel the ultimate relaxation – fabulous idea.

  12. Sounds like Heaven in Willows. I also am borrowing your Mom’s lemonade stand idea. My most favorite is cucumber water. Happy napping.

A little netting draped from the umbrella. How perfect for a mosquito free night!

    Very convenient …!!!
A bed in the garden …
And I remember -among many!- a photo of yours :
Your godmother’s bed which looked like a garden !!!
Thinking of you all, American ladies, with/in your creative world!!!

What does your mom do about little four-footed critters that decide the bed would be a perfect spot to nest? Or birds that let fly droppings? Aren’t there still indigenous wild reptiles in the Willows area? My grandparents in the coast Redwoods region kept a wicker couch with oil-cloth covered cushions outdoors, but compared to a bed it was relatively impervious to the elements and animals.
BTW, every time before I got into our hammock there, I always had to flip it over to check for lizards clinging underneath, because occasionally we’d find a Mountain Gila under there — not to be confused with the poisonous Gila Monster in the desert southwest.
Still, the Mountain Gila, while not poisonous, carried whatever toxins etc. it might have picked up from the blood of critters it had consumed, so evidently could make a person pretty sick if bitten (and the nearest hospitals were 50 then-very-slow miles away in your choice of Willits or Fort Bragg).

Corey, these images over the last couple of weeks of glorious summer living have been such a pleasure to see. I think we all love to see the gorgeous south of France through your eyes, but these photos show the beauty of a different lifestyle in California – vive la difference 🙂
And, as many others have noted, your mom sure has an eye for detail and an amazing ability to create lovely surroundings, just like you.

What a delightful little backyard room! I love the idea of an outdoor nap on that shady, comfy little bed. But I can empathize with your mosquito situation – there’s at least a ZILLION mosquitos here in Minnesota after all this rain and hot weather. I can’t even step outside to water a plant without being buzzed.

  18. She has such a little oasis out there! I love it. Grab a book or magazine and lemonade and enjoy.

She’s bound to have an outdoor shower out there somewhere too?

  24. did you know that mosquitos only bite sweet people? that’s what MY mom says!!

  25. Marilyn

What a lovely outdoor bedroom! A nap will do just fine, thanks! Now where is the bathroom with the tub or shower for outdoor bathing?

What a dream, but unfortunately just a dream here in our humid climate! The bed would be all moldy! Such sweet pics you give us! Thanks! God Bless, Corey!
