Summer Gathering in the Garden

Melon salad

Sliced melon in juice glasses sit on the sideboard next to the dessert forks. A paper-thin linen dome is placed over the sliced melon to protect them.

Basket to carry out silverware

Silverware in a basket ready to carry outside.

Water pitcher

A long, tall glass cocktail pitcher that I like to use to serve water.

Saint victoire provence

The Provencal countryside… it is a drawing factor to why so many people come to visit France.

Sailing stories from Turkey and Greece …
Smiling and welcoming faces from Turkish boat vendors, market sellers, village dwellers, …

  2. It’s been a wonderful summer here in New England. Sunny, breezy days, lazily sitting by the pool, book in hand-what could be better? The kids did various camps-soccer mostly, we ate loads of fresh tomatoes, basil, corn-on-the-cob, and ice cream. We welcomed a French exchange student-he was a doll and we hope to have him back next summer. All in all, a perfect summer.

  3. We have had a HOT summer here in southwest Kansas. But, we have been able to be in the air conditioning or swimming most of the time. My sister and her family visited us from Ohio and that was great fun. The summer always goes too fast..

  4. Well – we’ve been invited around to our neighbor’s a few times for cocktails in their hot tub. Yes — we’re a wild bunch and I won’t tell you what we get up to here in our village 🙂
AP and I drove down the the coast of Dorset and Devon a few weeks ago and we stopped at small villages all along the way. We walked around coastal towns and beaches — stopped at pubs for lunch — generally relaxed and enjoyed every minute.

  5. Mostly sailing regattas with my middle son. Trying hard to de-clutter, boy scout & vacation Bible camps, college visitsjob searching. Driving, because we live so far from everything . . .stick shock at the gas pumps. Realization that another summer has passed and my dream of visiting France was put off another year and trying to figure out how TO MAKE IT HAPPEN NEXT YEAR!!! Gotta call that acquintance who said his mother rents her apartment in Nice. Lastly, lack of sleep . . .gotta buy a new mattress!!!

It has been a fun summer for our family: Four weeks traveling around Europe catching up with relatives, old friends, and sightseeing (London, Paris, the gorgeous Dordogne region, Carcassonne, Collioure and Spain’s Costa Brava.) Sailing in the glorious Pacific Northwest. Outdoor concerts at the local winery with close friends. Finally, I was able to fly back to France and spend 10 days on my own in Nice exploring the foothills and la Cote d’Azur. Heck, let’s revise my original statement. This has been a GRAND summer! Family visits and continuing this month. Making new blog friends daily and creating like never before. Following you has been so much fun this year!
Summer in Phoenix is so hot you tend to stay indoors but I made sure I got my green on and keep my patio fresh with flowers and herbs.

This summer has been a mixed bag in my life.
The first summer my son and his family live just 5 doors down which means 6.5 year old Iris comes to see grandma all the time……”THAT” my friends is heaven on earth. I sit here in my studio at my computer and listen to her playing with a friend out front…..so sweet. Barbies, pretend camping…..fairy adventures…….
On the other hand, professionally the single most challenging time in my entire life. Hard to watch a valued employee taken down by mental illness and trying to keep the remaining 29 safe and secure so they can earn a living for their loved ones.
I swear the hand of God held me up.
And this blog…..how I would ever get through the day without my stop to see Corey and all the commenters, friends, associates…….my home away from home.
    Happy Summer All !!!!

  9. Have been running delightfully all summer on leftover vapors from our May trip to France 🙂
Have plodded all summer on translating novel, first draft of which I hope to complete by early October. Predict that collaborators suffer nervous breakdowns this autumn 😉
Milestone: Applied for Social Security benefits. It’s official now: I’m OLD!!!!!!! On the bright side, I can start saving for my next trip to France.

  10. hm. Memories…
straight As from my son who has many difficulties and continues to bring me to my knees daily in prayer.
a wonderful time seeing my parents and a knitting conference to boot with my aunt.
driving with my husband to Georgia (while the kids flew), talking the whole way together, being tailed by a local sheriff for nothing that we could think of except out of state license–plus my husband being scared by a bear.
a 5.8 earthquake here in Virginia while we were sitting on our deck talking about God, human/natural freedom, and the laws of nature (I kid you not).
cozy times while Hurricane Irene lashes outside.
processing peaches, tomatoes, dreaming of making my little yard an edible garden.

This was a summer of sacrifices for me, yet, there was reward after much of it….

  12. The photographic grace with which you capture the human face is almost magical…yet instead of stealing their spirit, as the Amish believe, you seem to infuse it. Amazing photos! My summer? New home by the river -filled with life! Fun!

  13. Karen@PasGrande-Chose

My favourite memory from this summer is meeting you and Yann 🙂

  14. Bev, re the 5.8 quake, I recently came across this quote:
“You can’t be bad enough to cause an earthquake, neither can you be good enough to stop one.”
Which is fortunate, because nearly all of my paternal family — since my great-grandparents immigrated to Northern California from the Azores — has been through either the Great Quake and Fire of Aught Six, or the World Series Quake of 1989 (“Loma Prieta”)!
Hope you and other East Coast followers of this blog stay safe and dry during Hurricane Irene.

  15. Summer is not over yet………..

  16. where do I start?!
how much time have we got?
so, i’m just here to congratulate you to your photos which put me in a ‘canicule’ mood although right now I’m wearing my long warm wool jumper!!!!! 🙂

  17. great photo of Allison – I love that girl
