French Wedding

Columns

When marrying in France the marriage is held at the city hall. If you want a religious ceremony that comes afterwards, though a wedding in a church or by a minister, on its own, is not legally binding, nor recognized in France. A legal French marriage must first take place at the city hall.

Happy love

Mimi and Alain were married at the city hall. Usually, family and friends gather outside then walk in together, followed by the mayor reading the legal marriage documents. The ceremony is over in fifteen minutes not personal, let alone uniquely special.

I warned Mimi preparing her for "how it is" in France. I could feel her disappointment at the reality of how a "French Wedding" was going to be like.

Happy kiss

But my warning was not needed yesterday. The mayor was amiable, a kindred spirit regarding the elements of beauty, sacredness and romance. The smallest details were not overlooked but highlighted… I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw the legal marriage documents with a pink ribbon laced down the side.

Wedding day

At a French wedding the mayor rarely says more than a few words, most of them about the legal contract regarding the laws of marriage. Looking at the paper to see the names to announce.

Looking out for one another

Married

Though yesterday the mayor spoke directly to Mimi and Alain, he spoke of marriage as a path taken by two people, saying that the road ahead is more beautiful when shared, that when the path is uneven or rough, we must reach out to one another, hold one another's hand. Believing that the path ahead is our happiness. His words flowed, those of us gathered were touched. He spoke of problems as rocks as obstacles in our path, saying that the boulders we can see in advance and plan for, together… but the small stones…. we need to look out for one another, tripping is easy, but if we reach out to one another we can make it.

Look ahead the future is yours…

Wedding clothes

Wedding clothes.

Alain is classic, Mimi is Bohemian Rhapsody.

She likes pink, he likes yellow.

He wore pink for Mimi.

He loves her style.

But moreso he loves her… whole story, light hearted steps, brocante madness, crazy lace tales and her two dogs and cat.

Mimi loves Alain every ounce of his past, present and future. His family, his step, his French ways, his silliness, his bachelor ways and his apartment that does not have one stitch of pink, let alone lace.

He finds her beautiful, she founds him handsome…

  7. This is such an incredibly wonderful story, and you photographed it all so well. Thank you for this bright spot of lace and pink and love, and please thank Mimi and Alain for being welling to share their special day with us.

  8. So blissfully beautiful! I loved watching the wedding/ reception unfold yesterday. I had a big smile on my face as I looked at the pictures on my iphone. A coworker asked what I looking at. I explained your blog, their meeting, the wedding, etc. I got a dubious, somewhat sarcastic response of, “but you don’t even know those people.” I smiled and agreed that I may not know them personally, but that I feel I do know them and love their stories and lives. Thank you so much for taking me along. It was one of the nicest weddings I never actually attended. I loved the words from the mayor. What a beautiful way to look at marriage. All the best to the happy couple and your family.

  9. I love the kissing photos above and the mayor’s wise words. This is such a happy tale; you have done well dear matchmaker! This lifts my spirits…really! However today is not a good day for imagining that a Frenchman might think kindly towards a New Zealander;(

  10. How very touching and romantic. I adore stories like this. Love at any age is beautiful and your mayor sounds like a gem. Giving them that beautiful message on their wedding day. God love him.
I was on my way back home when “amour” kept me in Arizona. You just never know where love will lead you.

  17. OMG…I want her dress!!!!!!!! It appears to be deconstructed with lots of fabulous bows and flowers. I love the “tattered” look it has. Linen and /or gauze??

  24. First, congratulations to your friends, Mimi and Alain! I wish for them, many, many happy years together.
Second, Mimi’s dress is incredible, romantic and down-right cool. I LOVE that she wore something that truly reflected who SHE is.
Third, how great is it that the mayor remembered that a wedding is about love first, contract second. Bet he’s a happily married man himself… Or at least he believes that it IS possible to be happily married to the same person for years. ‘Cause it is!

  25. “it was one of the nicest weddings I never attended.”. I agree wholeheartedly.

  26. Divine, Corey. Thank you for letting us be there with you. (For someone with a bum wrist, you took excellent pictures!)

  31. Thank you Corey and Mimi for sharing all these wonderful photos!!!

  32. Glad to read that the legal ceremony wasn’t so ordinary.
BTW I think that this should read “his apartment that does not have one stitch of pink, let alone lace.” – there is a “not” missing.

  33. I forgot to say “Thank You” to Mimi and Alain for inviting us all to share this absolutely wonderful day with them.
Some weddings are special…this one definitely was.
And, Mimi, your dress was absolutely beautiful!
    Merci

  34. It was terrific! Thanks for posting so much of the wedding, and please give thanks to the newlywed too, and my best wishes to them, but by the look in their eyes I see they’re already blessed…..

  39. Marie-Noëlle

The 2 of them look gorgeous !!!
And tell Alain pink suits him !!!

  40. Lovely, lovely lovely! More beautiful than a fairy tale! Thank you and the wedding couple for sharing this enchanting event with us.

  41. Farmboy Husband’s reaction: “I didn’t know they even played rugby in France”!

  42. You did a beautiful job, Corey. The dress is a work of art. And you, as expected, captured and conveyed the height and depth of love present in images of wonderful beauty.
    Brava!

  43. It is so wonderful to be part of this magical event – thanks to your wonderful photos! BTW – the wedding dress was breathtaking! PS. If I move back to Chico(CA) maybe you can do some matchmaking for me when you come to visit – I’m thinking France is too far away! Jamie V in MT

  44. I feel like I was there! Everything looks so perfect, so thoughtful, so love-filled. If only, ONLY I could have been there playing my harp for the happy couple!
And if you can find a guy who loves harp music – and is willing to help me haul the 100-pound thing around on weekends – set me up, sister!
