How to Tie a Scarf

Charlotte, a dear friend who use to live in the same French village that I live in, and reader of my blog sent me this link. My cousin Franca and Mardog who were in France briefly with me, before suddenly having to return back to California, asked me seconds before they left…. "Corey, how did you tie your scarf?" I had to look in the mirror to see what I had done. I tried to duplicate it, but couldn't explain. Dang-it! I usually work well under pressure.

Alas, Charlotte sent me this link, I love when that sort of serendipity thing happens.

Look, I can show them now… it was one or the other… Either the Turtleneck, the Celebrity, or the Waterfall… a mixture of the three.

I am not certain but I would bet on it that most French women have a drawer full of scarves. I won't tell you how many I have… unless you do.

How do you tie a scarf?

  1. My favorite is the fold In half to make a loop, the pull one end through the loop, twist the loop and pull the other end through. Quick, easy and looks complicated enough that women stop me on the street and ask how it’s done!

  2. I’ve seen this vid before (luckily, as it turned out as it keeps stalling… – too much scarf tying going on I guess!) and it’s quite marvellous….
I bet you Corey that I have more scarfs, shawls, carrรฉs, stoles etc than you….. ๐Ÿ™‚ I need a huge woven crate for my winter collection and I have another one, slightly smaller for my collection of the other three seasons.
Like them nearly always best sort of around and around the neck and linked loosely (tied under) in one of the many folds. Feel even (for once) quite very Parisian… ๐Ÿ˜‰
Shall try the link again – might be luckier!
Have a peaceful, sunny, warm (in heart) weekend – thinking of all of you…. Shall send you a special prayer when singing tonight, we are giving a concert.

  3. Wow. I don’t often wear scarves because I’ve always felt inept tying them. Thanks!

  4. Dear Corey,
I know that I am late in saying that I am so sorry to hear about your cousin. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. I lost a cousin exactly the same way 11 years ago and miss him terribly still.
I hope that time and your loving family will help ease your grief.

  5. This is great. I have been hanging on to an old promotional pamphlet from Hermes (although I have never owned one of their scarves) that showed various ways to wear a scarf, but this one is so much better – and more fun.
The firs, and only time, I had visited Aix-en-Provence I was fascinated how women wore their scarves. When I purchased a few in the market I asked the vendor how to wear it and he happily demonstrated.
My favorite fashion accessory. I will forward this on to my 29 year old daughter.
    Thanks……..

  6. Love this video. I have been a scarf wearer for 25 years. I always look for and buy scarves. I have so many that my husband says that I am banned from buying any more. I just smile, knowing that’s not going to happen any time soon. I’m hopelessly addicted.

Wow – this is perfect for me. I have a drawer full of scarves and no sense of how to make them look casually tossed on. Thanks!

  8. Thank You for the Christmas present…..Invaluable

  9. I have some scarves but never wear them because they feel hot and uncomfortable in our warm climate. But in a cooler climate, scarves look fabulous. I’m a shoe person and probably would skip the brocante and head for the boutiques.

  10. Now there are no excuses. The difficulty now is deciding which way to wear it.
    Loved this! Thanks.

  11. I have this on one of my Pinterest boards. Are you doing Pinterest yet? If yes, I’d love to follow your boards. I have dozens of scarves, they are my favorite thing since I rarely wear anything other than jeans and turtleneck tops. I usually wear my scarves one of three ways, but I’m determined to try mastering a few more creative ties. Please tell us how many scarves you have…

  12. My favorite, too, Deborah! In winter here it’s so cold that one can never go outdoors without a scarf, heavy coat, gloves and (often) hat and boots.

  13. The Modern One Loop and the European Loop are my basic scarf looks. About 10 dress scarves and 4 handcrocheted winter mufflers made by friends. Thanks for the neat instructional video.

  14. Or just pull BOTH ends through together!

  15. Oops! That was supposed to be a reply to Deborah (1st commenter).

  16. Or just pull BOTH ends through together!

  17. Thank you for this. I have many many scarves (I had never counted before and was surprised there are more than fifty including winter mufflers). I use them to zhuzh up my outfits, especially as I wear a lot of black. I tend to do simple styles like the first one on the video, the modern loop and the European loop for winter. I am keen to try the infinity ones now.

  18. that was excellent. i don’t wear scarfs, but they are sharp. i wish i could email this to a good friend that works in an office each day. she always looks spiffy. Bestest,Denise

  22. Thanks Corey. This is great. I just posted on my facebook page.

  23. I like to fold my scarf in half and then slip the ends through the loop-kind of like a slip knot.

  24. I love this…I sent it to all 5 of my girls. I use the “Magic Trick”…always gets a lot of comments…but now I have so many more to try.

  25. Awesome scarf tying info!

  26. I wrap, roll, wrap, tuck, roll and repeat until the ends of the scarf have disappeared.

  27. I love scarfs and have lots! Where I live it hardly ever gets cold enough for a coat but a sweater with a scarf is just perfect……so far this season I have bought 4 & received 2….. My problems is how to display them so that I don’t choose the same ones over & over?

  28. i have

  29. Love it! My daughter tells me That I had a scarf addiction and I happily agreed! I usually fold in half and pull the ends thru the loop and wrap around so the ends don’t show. Lately I have been wearing circle scarfs. Thanks for sharing! xxoo ๐Ÿ™‚

This was fun, but I’ll have to keep this available. I once, during sailing lessons, attempted to learn to tie knots and never was able to follow the instructions. I’m short of space, but still have one big basket full of scarves. Teddee

I love scarves, and love seeing this video (although everything goes by so quickly that all the variations started running together.) What a cutie doing all the modeling!
A while back I searched online and found a way to neatly hang/display my (over 30) scarves. It’s a bunch of wooden rods that swing back and forth, all connected to the wall by on 18″ tall wooden base. I think it was originally for holding men’s trousers? I have two of these on the wall behind my bathroom door, and have arranged the colors like the rainbow: yellow-green-blue-purple-(black)-rose-red-orange, with all sorts of variations in between.

  32. I like the link. I did not know that they way I tie my scarf is called the European loop.

  33. I thought that, too! She’s adorable.
