Salt and Pepper Shakers and a Checkered Board

Salt and pepper shakers

Salt and pepper shakers on a piece of checkered marble (tile) board.

My mother keeps coming up with creative fun ideas for her home.

Marble checkered board

The last time I was home my mom was putting away Thanksgiving. Amongst the things being put away was a piece of marble checkered tile that she had used for cheese and crackers. She smiled saying, "Isn't it a great piece, I use it for many things," That is so my mom…. Mrs. Re-Purposing, A thinker outside of the box when it comes to decorating, "I get alot of compliments on it too, a piece of tile that will never be used as a piece of tile." She laughed.

Before putting it away, she put it on the dining room table, then went around gathering her collection of salt and pepper shakers. She put them on the marble checkered tile and said, "I had this idea to use it as a center piece with salt and pepper shakers. Using the pepper shakers as the black tokens and the salt shakers as the white tokens… and play checkers, a conversational piece you see."

I saw and I liked.

"Clever idea Mom!" I gushed.

Clever idea for a checkered board

While my mom continued to put Thanksgiving away I imagined putting the checker tile in my suitcase and taking it home… If it hadn't weighed as much as a small child I might have.

To me, it looks more like a chess set with the different size pieces. I love it.

  2. Great idea to display such a lovely collection!

  3. Love this! Your mother is a creative soul with a killer collection of salt and pepper shakers. I love the whole idea of repurposing. Like us, objects are so much more than they appear at first glance.

One could play the game during a meal.Heavily salting or spicing food when the game gets heated up. Ohlala, really spicey if there was a check or checkmate declared. Fun ideas you were surrounded by!

  7. Your mom is so clever with decorating. That must be where you get it.

  13. Your mother is so creative and you inherited it! I love her tile and salt and pepper checkerboard! I will be keeping my eyes out for a checkered tile! I am never very good at coming up with an original idea, but I love happening on ideas that just shout to me and make me fall in love with them!
