My Favorite Find of the Day

Yesterday we went to the French brocante near Avignon. It was a perfect blue day without a cloud in sight and not at all cold. Which is surprising considering this is the first week in January. Unfortunately, the brocante was sparse. I suppose most the dealers were at home with their families having Gateaux des Rois since it was the feast of Epiphany. Or maybe after the holidays they didn't have much to offer at the brocante, either way it was a smaller than usual.

Imagine my thrill when I opened a dusty wooden box and found a bunch of hand carved eighteen century gilded wooden pieces, mostly flowers for a frame.

Instead of finding a "feve" in my Gateaux des Rois, I found one of the King's forgotten boxes.

What lucky find have you found recently?

  1. Those pieces are gorgeous Corey! I could think of a few uses for them myself. Wouldn’t those two spindle pieces fit together to make a candlestick?
I have not been infected with the bug long but it grows steadily and is here to stay!

  2. Brenda L. from TN.

The pieces are just beautiful! I can see why you call them “treasures”….but next time could you please speak up a little? I had trouble hearing everything you said. Thanks.

  3. Ah — funny this. I just posted my vintage find! I went to an indoor flea market over the weekend and found a vintage pendent with a secret compartment. I love jewelry with secret compartments/little detachable things/openings.

  4. Loved your giggles of delight! No neat finds here, but Mom did give me her grandparent’s very rustic i.e/ made with plywood, woven wood and canvas, picnic basket. Been bugging her about it for ages!

  5. Jill Flory

I would have snapped that up too! How cool – love it all:)

  6. Those are amazing and beautiful. How much time they must have taken to carve! It is lucky that they are now in the hands of someone who appreciates them!

My lucky find was hearing your voice on this video!!! Having been a follower of your blog for some time now, it is a joy to hear you speak. Most of the time you hear some one’s voice and then have to try to imagine the face that goes along with the voice. This brought a genuine smile to my heart. T.O. Joanne

Hey, is that the same Shellac manicure still going strong?!

How fun for us to see you open that box!
    Thanks for sharing the thrill?

  11. What a lovely find! Good finds depend on being able to see possibilities in what other people would pass over. You’re a pro at that.
And I agree – the “find” for me was hearing your voice. Now when I read your posts I can “hear” you talking.

Lord love a duck! You have struck pay dirt! These are absolutely splendid.
You must have nearly fainted when you opened the box at the brocante.
Happy Feast of the Epiphany, indeed!

  13. You lucky stiff!!!!!!!!!!!!!Bestest,Denise

Oh….hee heeeeeeee and yay indeed! What a great find!
I found a Coldwater Creek silvery silk, beaded dress that I didn’t buy last year for some STUPID reason and have kicked myself about all year – it was now on their deep clearance section – in my size!!!!

O_M_G…..Love, love, love these pieces!!!! gotta keep those…..

  16. How do you say “green with jealousy in French”? My best recent find…hmmm…I think it the globes (de mariee I think) I recently scored. I buy to sell, but these are making it difficult.

Not a vintage find but a find which will thrill my son for his birthday this week. While waiting at a bus stop this morning, the public transport poster was being changed and I asked for it. As the man was about to discard it, he shrugged as he gave it to me. My 6 year old plans to be a mapmaker when he grows up and studies all maps friends have have sent from their travels.

  18. Last time, I found a huge wooden holder with a roll of old old butcher wax paper. It sits on my table and I can pull off any amount and tear it with the built in cutter. I’ve always wanted one of these 🙂 BTW, I see that your shellac finger nails are still looking good!

  19. Melinda Venable

ooh la la! love your “new” pieces! I have gilded chandeliers on the brain all the time, so perhaps… but best of all, great to hear your voice instead of the silence of just me sighing. LOL

    Hi K
I still cannot leave a comment on your blog? Why is that?
Good observation about the amazing Shellac Nails! Dang that is one amazing product!

To be green with jealousy = être verte de jalousie
For once, it’s the same image in both languages !!!

Oh, dear, Corey. It is Sunday, and you have caused me to “Lust after” and “Covet my neighbor’s goods”!! [ Ha! I wish you WERE my neighbor.] Wow, this is seriously cool stuff!! Like you said, YaY! And I remember hearing your voice in the little video where you ended it with “hand!” So cute!!

do we have shellac nails here?? are they called “Gel Nails” mine chip the first day but toesies last awhile. loved your find…yikes.

  26. Tongue in Cheek

    Hi CW
Not like gel. Just polish and instant drying. Mine is three weeks old, no chips. Redoing it because of growth.

  27. Believe it or not my lucky find recently Corey is a French cafe about 10 mins walk from my house. I was soooooo excited when it opened, yummy cafe au lait, french bread and macroons. AND surprise surprise the other day they had Gateaux des Rois. As you can imagine this is now my favourite place for a coffee or lunch, I would be happy to go every day.
I love the wooden pieces, just adore anything wooden. What a find. xx

Corey: Gary and I coming to Southern France in September. If you are in town, I will bring you a lampshade for your gilt wood and, if you haven’t made it into a lamp, Gary said that he could make it for you. Melinda, The House of Tuscany, Fort Worth, Texas (I met you at Round Top)
