French Antique Paper Back Books

Voltaire's Theater book two.

Pink paperback cover.

Worn, though I do not believe this book was ever read. It sat on a shelf, then was put into a box and stuffed in an attic. Years later an antique dealer bought the belongings of the house. Discovering the book(s) he found them interesting, decorative, valuable enough to sell. I bought three. I haven't read them, they sit as decorative objects on my shelf.

Stories, dreams, hopes…

Are they sitting on a shelf?

Or are they in an undiscovered box in a faraway attic?

A page in an eighteen-century book of an engraving of the Mona Lisa. History lessons then and now. I have seen the painting of Mona Lisa though never noticed her cleavage as I do in this engraving.

It strikes me funny that two people can look at the same thing and have two completely different impressions of it. The graver seems to notice her cleavage more than her smile or lack of ornamentation.

  1. I am reading the final book in the Clan of the Cave Bear series. Much of it takes place around the painted caves in France. I use to just like having books in the house and then I started reading. Now I usually don’t bring a book in the house without reading it. So many books, so little time.

  2. Florence Crowder

As you know, in the United States we do not have books that are so old. I do like a book that I bought in England ages ago, ‘Memoirs of the Court of Marie Antoinette’ by Madame Campan.
The wonderful life that she lived, along with all of her tragedies are written as though you were there and truly lived her life.

  3. I’m in the middle of two different books of Scripture right this minute, Old Testament and The Book of Mormon; and I have a list of book club orders to get through.
My daughter is a PhD candidate and reads/studies/picks clean a book every single day! I can’t imagine her schedule! She is very involved with French literature as well, and would probably pass out just seeing these fine old beauties! Such finds, you’re a lucky gal!

  4. What am I reading? Why, the book I’m currently translating, of course — and obviously with a figurative fine-toothed comb!

  5. “As you know, in the United States we do not have books that are so old.”
I must respectfully disagree. Many are, e.g., held in special books collections at libraries for their own protection, as they are quite fragile.

  6. Brenda L. from TN.

I read purely for entertainment…I love mysteries…(shades of many Nancy Drew books!)
I am reading Robert Ludlum’s “The Bourne Deception” by Eric Van Lustbader. I really like the Bourne books and movies. Bourne is such a strong but flawed character…just like us all.
I read Clive Cussler, Randy Wayne White (love his Doc Ford character), Stuart Woods, David Balducci and for a good laugh…Donald E. Westlake.

  7. Old books are so cool. Someday I’m coming to France to buy my own neat old french books!

  8. I am reading Infidel by Aayan Hirsi Ali worth the read!
I also read Little Bee and found it a compelling read.

  9. Brother Matthew cracked me up in yesterday’s comments!

  10. Pearl Cobarrubias

There are (3) I’m currently reading; Isabel Allende’s The Sum of our Days, Paulo Coelho’s The Alchemist and Deepak Chopra’s Life after Death. I so enjoy getting lost in a good story.

  11. Whoops Mathew!!!

  12. More than one, with winter keeping me inside…
    1. Madeleine L’Engle {Herself} — a short selection before breakfast,
    2. Frederick Buechner’s “Listen to Your Life” — a short reading, akin to evening prayer,
    3. Story, Robert McKee, a chapter a day, for a class I’m soon beginning, and
    4. Leaving Church, by Barbara Brown Taylor, for pure pleasure and reflection.
A good book reads me as I read it — and as for these four — so far, so good.

  13. Corey, I feel confused. I just got your invitation to write about writing one’s book just late last night. I sat down to share my idea when I see it’s over. Why am I getting this a day late. You are 12 hrs ahead of me, so the next day is the best I can do.
    ??? Just wondering

  14. I came in a day too late 🙁
    My title:
All a Girl Really Needs is a Kickass Red Lipstick!
And it would have been located in the Self-Help/Weight Loss Section of your local bookstore.
    Have a good weekend, Corey!

  25. I am reading “A Brief History of France” by Cecil Jenkins, and While I Was Gone by Sue Miller. How about favorite books? Do you have an all time favorite book Corey? I have 3, Pride and Prejudice (for Mr. Darcy-the Colin Firth version-of course;) Bee Season by Myla Goldberg (because the writing is brilliant;) and A Witness to Life by Terrance Greene, because it’s a good story and it’s well written.

  26. I’m reading The Elegance of the Hedgehog by Muriel Bayberry, which actually was originally written in French and takes place in France. You should read it Corey, if you haven’t already!
