May the Real Valentine Please Stand Up

Valentine's

1900s – French Antique Postcard.

"Young Lovers on the Train."

On the backside of the postcard the woman wrote:

"I left you at the train, I waved goodbye, I was sad to see you go…. But then I saw you seat next to a young chicken! How dare you break my heart. Please Darling tell me it didn't mean anything?! Though tell me well, her smile gave any love you had for me away."

Honesty….Trust.

Valentine's

1800s – French Legal Marriage Document.

Listing who has want before they are married. Still a law in France. Call it a pre-nuptial.

What is yours before you marry is yours, and what is his before you marry is his, and the two shall not be divided otherwise if you should divorce later on.

Commitment…..Trust.

Valentine's

1900s – A collection of Love Letters.

Hand written, over time, years to be exact.

During the Second World War.

He sent his wife and daughter to live outside the city where he thought it would be safer. They wrote everyday to one another. They wrote every detail of their lives…

They put all their hope into one another, "When will I see you again?"

Faithfulness, Courage…Trust.

Valentine's

1950s French Antique Wedding Menus.

"Dinner: December 3rd, 1951"

Fifteen courses.

Soup to Champagne.

Loving over the years… you might see a subtle change in the appearance of the one you love.

Trust that your skin will change, and that love is not skin deep.

Lovers of PAris

1800s French Book Titled: The Lovers of Paris.

"We always have Paris…"

Is that a line from a movie? Which one? Did I get the right city?

Trust that one of you will know the answer in any given situation.

prayer book

1800s – Prayer Book.

The little prayer books is full of hand-written prayers, scribbled on the side.

She knew what she wanted and prayed for it steadily.

Faith…. Trust.

wallpaper flowers

1930 – Flowered Wallpaper.

She asked for flowers, he sent her orange ones. When he left she kicked the chair, then cried, "The thought doesn't count if it is orange."

Trust that if you don't say what you want and how you want it you might be disappointed.

Or if you really love someone it doesn't matter what they bring.

Unless it is orange flowers, or praline chocolates.

  1. Play it again Corey…the movie was Casablanca.
My fella insists on giving flowers on Valentine’s Day, despite me telling him they are overpriced and he shouldn’t. I love that he sometimes doesn’t listen.

  2. I think I would take those orange flowers, but oh would I swoon for the softness of pink. My guy being very practical takes the same heart box to Sees and has them refill it each year. I better never lose that box.

Lovely, Corey, very fun to read. I love my man – he wants me to wear something red on Valentine’s. Not necessarily day clothes either. Scandelous!!!:):)
I don’t expect flowers or chocolates or a card. Someday when we find our money tree….!!!!!

  4. Re pre-nups, at least Farmboy Husband has the comfort of knowing I didn’t marry him for his money (just his good looks!).

  5. Re “She asked for flowers, he sent her orange ones. When he left she kicked the chair, then cried, ‘The thought doesn’t count if it is orange.’”
Obviously not a California girl, because I know I get saudades every time I see my beloved California Poppies, whether growing wild in fields or domesticated in someone’s garden! I recall the first time I saw some in the Azores, in the front yard of a house in Santa Cruz on the island of Flores (“flowers” in Portuguese, coincidentally). Presumably either the residents had brought the seeds back from the US with them, or someone had sent/brought the seeds as a gift.

This is so sweet, Corey. The letters back and forth between the couple – someday that would make a wonderful little book to share. As if you don’t have anything else to do…
I’ve been missing from these comments for a while – cooking up life changes and then getting really sick. I’ll try to be back more often, because I love this space you’ve created and the people who visit here!

  7. Funny, I just told my husband that he needs to not worry so much about getting it right, about disappointing me if he gets some detail wrong. Just do it. He brought me a coffee, but he called me first to check which kind.

  8. Bogart (Rick) to Ingrid Bergman, Casablanca, “we’ll always have Paris”. What a lovely Valentines blog. Thanks Corey

Pre-nups might’ve come in handy when my first marriage broke up as I left everything I owned behind in England, including trunks full of personal belongings I brought with me after I was married. Oh well…c’est la vie! My hubby has to work tomorrow, the old folks at the nursing home have to have a Valentine’s Day too…we will have a nice meal when he gets home and probably watch Laurel and Hardy films while eating cake 🙂

  10. Diane Keaton also said that to Jack Nicholson in “Something’s Gotta Give”. A great line…

  11. We had our Valentine lunch today and during the meal I pulled out our church bulletin that gave a short synopsis of St. Valentine. They left out the good part that while in prison (for his christian faith) he sent letters and cards signed Your Valentine. This was in the year 269AD. DH listened intently since he loves history. But I’m amazed that St. Valentine created a day of love that evolved to what it is today. Love is the greatest of all commandments – what a contribution to humanity!
For our first Valentine’s Day, I bought DH a new pair of jeans. He gave me 12 American Beauty roses. I’m the practical one and he’s the romantic!

    faithfulness, courage, trust
that’s easy to hold on to.

  14. Happy Valentines Day everyone
I hope I find true love someday….sometimes it is hard to find
I’ve had fun giving to my friends and one friend gave me red roses:)
I hope you all have a romantic fun day:)

  15. Happy Valentine’s Day….my favorite holiday. My husband and I exchange two cards, a romantic sentiment and a humorous one. We use our own names on the romantic one and Fred and Ethel on the funny one as in Lucy and Ricky’s neighbors in I Love Lucy. I love that line from Casablanca. That’s why we’ll visit Paris again in May for our 40th anniversary! I’m a romantic:)

  16. Happy Valentines! I know yours will be filled with love.

I loved the line in “Somethings got to give” as well One of my favorite movies.
    Happy Valentines day.

  18. We always say, “oh let’s not do anything for Valentine’s Day…” but we always give each other SOMETHING. Perhaps a card or a chocolate heart. This year I got a rose bush!! I’m grateful because it really took me a very long time to find my Valentine.

  19. Oh, Marilyn, this made me laugh out loud! Maybe re-using the same box is a sentimental thing? At any rate, you must give him credit for filling it with See’s. My frugal father always buys my poor mother Whitman’s or worse.

  20. Happy Valentines Day Corey……..
and I am probably an oddball….
    but orange roses? my favorite!!!

  21. pam in oregon

    Happy Valentine’s Day, Corey!
