Stair Master in the Ruins of Uxmal

Running the stairs in Uxmal

Uxmal, like most of the ancient ruins in Mexico, has many things in common one of them being steps. Uxmal spreads out over one hundred and fifty acres. The acres are covered with amazing ruins, most of them with steps.

When traveling with the two that I am traveling with, the steps are, "The fun part."

How many steps can one do before one more step makes you want to scream.

104 degrees.

Sun burned.

And those two in sandals.

Ding Dongs hello?

Uxmal stairs how many

The thing with steps is that whatever goes up must come down.

Oddly enough going up is easier than going down.

Especially when the steps are about the size of slice of bread.

Uxmal 2012

After hours of walking around, hiking up and down, admiring Uxmal, I stepped out on this last set of steps and took to my zoom lens to show me its beauty.

"I'll take photos, you two go ahead," was the excuse I offered."

Thankfully they loved the idea.

Uxmal Mexico

I think Chelsea was asking her dad if he would carry her.

About twenty years ago when we were hiking in the Pyrenees, French Husband carried both Chelsea and Sacha down the hill…. we had hiked a little too far that day… I wished he could have carried me too.

His back has never been the same since.

Uxmal running down the stairs

It wasn't long before the two of them were racing… or showing off in the ungodly heat.

I sat back in the shade and thought to myself, "Knock yourselves out! You two are nuts!"

But I couldn't help noticing that they were both laughing.

Happy together. Even in the heat, on the millionth step.

Uxmal Ruin

Dad helps daughter.

Or was she helping him?

What I do know is that I admired the two of them holding hands.

I almost wanted to be by their side…

Then I thought of how many steps it would have taken to get there.

I took a photo instead.

Ruin Stairs Uxmal

The ruins are gonna ruin me.

But at least the daughter and her father are happy and that makes me happy…

and a cold beer helps too.

Love the photos, but they make me dizzy !

  3. That second photo is amazing. Very artsy. I’d have avoided all those stairs too.

  4. Father-daughter bonding time and a smart decision for your ankle. Great photos!

  5. Oh those steps would have intimidated me too…no hand rail. I would worry more over if lost my footing than the actual reason to climb and descend them..the beauty of those sites! Smart move to stay put and snap photos Corey!

  6. How beautiful… Dad and daughter .

  7. Brenda L. from TN.

WHEW! I’m with you, Corey…in the shade with that beer!

  8. I would be sitting in the shade with you for sure! How fun!

  9. I love to see my grown children with their Dad and the camaraderie they have between them. Fun photos…and I would have opted to take pictures as opposed to climbing steps too!
P.S. I made your asparagus, smoked salmon ,pasta dish for Easter and it was a huge success! Thanks so much. 🙂

I agree with the other bloggers..
The father, daughter bond takes my breath away.
Being on the outside looking in on the father/daughter relationship my husband has with our daughter, gives me such joy.
Know matter how old the daughter is,dad will always be their holding out his hand.
    Beautiful!

  11. Adventure must be in the blood. Daddies do have a special relationship with their little girls, no matter how tall they get.

I’ve visited Chichen Itza and Teotihuacan and climbed those pyramids.
And you are so, so right…going up is WAY easier than going down those steps! Because if you have any fear of heights (which I do), it looks so very steep on the return.
Stair Master….LOL…that is the best description I’ve heard.

  13. When I saw the title of this post, my first thought was “Good lord, tell me she’s not climbing stairs in some remote part of the world again!” Glad you just took pictures and protected your ankles/wrists/ and all the others. Those stairs are fierce! Just looking at the pictures makes me dizzy.

  14. Still 104°F? Yikes — show me the air-conditioning!!!

  15. Very sweet photos of dad and daughter. I truly am breaking a sweat just looking at those stairs. Good for them! xxoo

  16. So glad French husband is there with you and not home all alone in France.

  17. I can echo Deb, as my first thought was that you had injured yourself again. Thank goodness I read the whole post!

  18. Corey — these shots are fantastic. go, you.

  21. beautiful pictures, fascinating place. perhaps one day i can visit and like you take the pics.

  22. great photos!
I’ve climbed those stairs before – same with other pyramids. What amazes me about these photos is that they descended on their feet. I always end up scared of the descend and sit down on the steps. Then I go, bump, bump, bump all the way down. On my behind.
These photos don’t capture the fact the steps are NARROW and VERY, VERY HIGH UP!!!! You feel like you are just going to fall forward and crack your skull.
Good for them for surviving. And good for you for staying on terra firma!!!

  23. Oh wow! Just the photos of those steps and those angles makes me woozy. Brave daughter and husband you have. I’d be right there with you at the bottom, sharing that cold beer. (you know, I’d also have taken a picture of you standing on the first step, from a low angle, to make it look like you were climbing and then you could have posted it and lied and nobody would have known!)

Talk about stair way to heaven with Father and Daughter. Beautifully photographed. I did them 44 years ago with my daughter and it was an experience, especially the icy cold cerveza served in a copper mug. Virginia
