A Few More Clues

Yes it is a grill of sort…

I meant to say that the letter was not G as in Grill, but a

C

it starts with a C and I am Dyslexic with things like letters and numbers.

And after looking the "C" thing up online to be sure that I had my facts right, that I had understood what the French antique dealer was told me was true and that I hadn't misunderstood I discovered that:

That these C grills are still made.

That they originated in Spain (Not French! The antique dealer did not mention that.)

Though something about them just says FRENCH to me,

And that they are part of a big lifestyle kind of event.

Now how is that for BIG TIME clues!?

It is an old gypsy grill carried in caravans. The “legs” hold it up over the fire and food is cooked on the rack. I have a similar one I bought in Granada……. Or
…. It is a drying rack for curing hams. It hangs from the ceiling and the hams hang from each of the looped “legs”. Spanish Jamón Serrano Is cured for at least a year. This makes it firmer and more delicate than the similar Italian Proscciuto.

It is rack that is suspended over a fire pit to roast cyclamen mushrooms, waffle berries, junidroops and various fresh herbs. Invented in 16th century, but still used world wide, primarily by elves during the Great Solstice Celebrations. Trolls are known to gate crash these celebrations to steal the food and anything else they can get their grubby hands on. The Trolls stuff their faces and sell their stolen gathered goods to brocante dealers (hence where you got yours), unaware that these magical cooking implements are precious indeed. For if you cook on one of these, the cyclamen mushrooms, waffle berries and junidroops are always perfect.

OK, now I’ve really got it! (I wasn’t that far off in my first post).
It is indeed a gypsy grille. It is a “Charcuterie” grille used for cooking meats over an open fire during the annual gypsy gathering in the Camargue that takes place in May honoring Les Saintes Maries de la Mer, the three Marys who were very close to Christ.
After the parade of the horses and the bullfights (yes, there are bullfights in France!) the families gather around the campfires and cook their meats on these large grilles.

  21. tamara giselle

It is for smoking little fishes….while you are wearing your unmentionables 🙂

  22. tamara giselle

    is it a “coal” rack?

  23. We think that it’s a smoker and for salting fish or pork (sausage) and drying them . All those racks can hang a lot of fish. Draping little fleshy things over those racks and drying the bajeejees out of them for yummy eating on into the cold winters . brrrrr

  24. jend’isère

Cucina paella or as Mimi said chorizo paella. Or back to my bird theme_chicken paella grill

  25. Is it meant to smoke meat? Or grill shellfish for paella?

  26. Well of course… This “grill” is used for crepes.
    Thanks for the good clue

  27. I’d go with the gypsy bandwagon, but somehow the “legs” put the meat too close to the fire. Could it be that they roast oysters over fire? I have had oysters cooked on a grill somewhere near Naples, Florida. They tasted delicious, with ketchup and horseradish dip. 😉

  28. Cargolade for grilling snails?
