Everything You Ever needed Found at the French Flea Market

French Antique Fatima Hand Knocker

Everything you ever needed, thought you needed, didn't know you needed or wanted you can find at the French flea market. If you need hardware, software, clothing, toys, knick or knack, bric anc brac, Jack or Jill you can find it at the brocante.

Even if you aren't looking for anything you will can find something.

It never ceases to amaze me the stuff, the tons and tons of stuff that can be had at the fleamarkets in France. Literally I have asked myself when is it ever going to end? How many door knockers, tables, mirrors, letters, books, dishes, platters, pillowcases, lamps, etc. etc. could a country have had in the nineteen and eighteenth century?

French antique scissor

Finding something you like is easy. Trust me if you come to France bring an empty suitcase. You will not regret the extra room to carry things back. The clothes you pack you will wish you hadn't…

My mother said, the first time she saw the flea market in France, "I have died, and gone to heaven, with my tongue hanging out and I am tripping over it."

Flour jar

Pharmacy jars used as cannisters.

Going to the flea markets is the best way to feel good about yourself and recycyling.

I recycle.

My house is recycled.

I can count the new things I have on one hand, okay maybe two… forget that I said that.

One of the best ways to recycle is to buy at the flea markets.

French towel Rack

A towel for every purpose under heaven.

If you didn't use paper towels how many towels would you use in a day?

I do not use paper towels. I can tell you having a towel for every purpose cuts down the laundry.

French dish towels

Varied dish towels.

Some are linen, some are cotton, all are old and in perfect condition.

Do you think old things survived because they were better made? Because they were valued? Needed? Cared for?

Provence, french, pottery, vintage, antiques

Every single photo is of something I found at the brocante, bought, kept, used and eventually sold.

Small purposeful, delightful, well made antiques for the home.

Fruit painting on board

Sweet and charming too.

Nothing says original and unique then antiques and flea market finds.

Want to have your own look… buy at your local second hand shop.

French Dishes Black Transferware

Why have your meals on the go when antique plates look this sweet?

French letter slot

French antique door/letter slot.

I know I love old stuff… and cannot understand why my brother Mat doesn't.

Seriously, Mat this is cool, you gotta admit it!

French Pink Ruffled Page Books

Paper back books from the 1830.

Most of us won't look this good after 100 years from now.

French mail box

Old mailbox.

In France they made it a law, a law that you cannot have a small mailbox or slot. Hence, the market is flooded with them.

Crazy.

Old windows, and hardware too. Because new windows that are double paned the French goverment will give you a tax break.

Lucky me!

Button-shoe

A baby's leather shoe.

Boutis 1900s

A hand made boutis.

Time taken.

Slow art.

Zen reflection.

Love nest, warm.

Made to last with enormous care and talent.

Brocante music

A dog sits under an old iron table with a music box over head.

He knows he is safe… I am not looking for a dog. Though if I were I am certain I would find one at the brocante.

  1. Here is a name for your first book! “Booty and the Boutis!”
That boutis is the most lovely thing! For sale? Size? Price? Local pickup available?

I bought only 3 things at the brocante this year…a huge copper saucepan that I will get re-tinned, 5 yards of linen for 5 euro..(not old, but I am a sewer and linen of that quality is NOT a buck a yard at home) and the most beautiful handmade HEAVY linen sheet with a handsewn seam down the center and the brides initials on the edge In one section a repair was made…such imperfection just adds to the beauty. I could have bought them all…lord they are beautiful. I’ll probably use it as a table cloth on my modern industrial dining table. Wouldn’t the original owner be surprised?

  3. This post reads like a song for me! This is the essence why I keep reading your blog day after day.

  4. Makes me smile. 😉

  5. a reminder of how to make the world a better place by recycling…or in my world discovering new uses for these precious treasures. thank you for reminding us about the history of these finds.. i.e. small and beautiful mail boxes..
    any other laws passed lately?

  6. All such good stuff! My house is filled with vintage, too. I have trouble buying new things because they just don’t mean anything.
I love the red striped dishtowels. They would look (and work!) great in my kitchen.

  7. Still can’t get over that you don’t use paper towels…

  8. HaHa….me,too.

  9. I am always a wee bit nervous to use old jars for food. I worry about some poisonous residue from some long forgotten remedy or medicine that was stored in them! I love old jars esp used for spices and as canisters but I am so skittish! So, I am stuck using them only for storage of non edibles and as vases etc….Those canisters are so pretty!

  10. J’adore your last photo! We saw puppies for sale in a cardboard box at the brocante in Isle sur la Sorgue, and it was hard to walk away.

Love those plates! My favorite brocante is Tongeren in Belgium. I also like the Marche aux Puces in Paris. But I have not been to any in the south of France, where I am guessing the prices are better.
I have brought home in suitcases or bags: 19th century clocks, wall sconces (with and without prisms), paintings, frames, and silver-plated items. I have yet to saw a chair in half to get it on the plane, but I certainly would, if the right chair came along. 🙂

  12. There is just something about vintage treasures. I have regular plates in my cupboard but I so prefer to eat of my old ironstone platters that I keep on the counter. I like the weight, the look and feel – all of it.
I would be the same as your mother if I ever got to go to the Brocante. I would love love to have a wall of those cute little mailboxes in my house – no end of ideas pouring into my head!

  13. How fun to see all the treasures you have found at the broncante. Love them all.

  14. Okay the brocante is growing on me, I love re-pursposing old things.

  15. Rebecca from the pacific northwest

    Hi Rebecca, this is Rebecca!
I saw some gorgeous heavy, embroidery-monogrammed linen sheets at Isle-sur-la-Sorgue some years ago when there. I wasn’t expecting them and didn’t have room for them, but oh I still remember them. Next time…

What? No disparaging comment from Mat yet? And I came to the comments just to see it.

I was also surprised to see the dog peeking up from under the Victrola table in the last photo, knowing you and your attitude about dogs, Corey. He makes such a charming last-minute surprise and tidbit in the bottom of the photo and blog-post though!
