Saturday Art Saves: Pen to Paper, Your Favorite Books

  Leather bond books

Every Saturday I focus on a different artist that I admire. From potters to painters, chefs to collectors, seamstress to songwriters, lifestyle to lovers… anyone who has set the paintbrush, pastry brush, hands and heart on fire to create.

Those who inspire art to flow where it may.

In 2009 I asked my blog readers to share with me their favorite books, the list was impressive. Today, I would like to share with you the list that many of you shared with me, and the links to the bloggers who shared their favorite books.

Happy Reading, and please feel free to add your favorite book(s) and blog(s) in the comment section.

Had to delete the post as it was causing my blog to go awry due to the links I added, sorry.

  1. The Prisoner of Heaven by Carlos Ruiz Zafón

  2. I love a reading list! Thanks, I’ll get right on it. Tongue in Cheek is still the only blog I read every day.

  3. Books and reading is the other thing I cannot live without. May I share one more title to add to the list, Corey?
I read this book about three years ago and am still thinking about it. Galina. I read the original in Russian but the book has been translated in English. Here you can buy it used http://www.amazon.com/Galina-A-Russian-Story-Vishnevskaya/dp/0156343207/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1343475169&sr=8-1&keywords=galina
If you like opera you sure have heard about Galina Vishnevskaya. This is her biography.

  4. thanks for sharing this -love a list of good books!
But the pictures of the books? Gorgeous!! I love everything about books – reading, of course, but the paper, the font, the covers, the illustrations as well, and your pictures of these lovely old books are such a treat!

  5. “Book: Antonio Tabucchi, Indian Nocturne (Notturno Indiano)
    Book: Gavin Plumley’s, Entartete Music
    Blog: http://entartetemusik.blogspot.com/
    (Copied this from today’s list)
I am pretty sure that is wrote about this book, Antonio Tabucchi’s “Indian Nocturne” and recommended Gavin’s Plumley’s blog, Entartete Musik. I still stand by it. 😉
Right now, I am rereading Tabucchi’s “Little Misunderstandings of no Importance” – another favorite book of mine.

  6. Correction: that I wrote ( and NOT that is wrote). Sorry!

  7. What an impressive list. I am going to have to come back and really take it in, then make my list of attack. Thanks! You are still #1 in my book of blogs.

  8. martina

I’m going to have to refer to this list after gardening season.
Did anyone mention Kristin Espinasse’s blog French Word a Day or her book Words in a French Life? Other blogs I like are Apartment Therapy and Vintage Rescue Squad. You can Google those title to get the correct blog addresses.

  9. It’s hard for me to say that I have a favourite book. It changes over time. There are some authors that I go back to and try to read everything they wrote or write. One of them would be Jane Austen.
Contemporary English authors that I like are: David Lodge, Ian McEwan, Neil Gaiman.
Canadian authors: Carol Shields, Mordecai Richler (love “Barney’s Version”!).
Polish S/F author translated to English: Stanislaw Lem (e.g. “Solaris” – you probably saw a movie with George Clooney). Lem was more of a philosopher and his books are very philosophical under the guise of S/F.
I like non-fiction, too. Some fascinating books: “Stiff: The curious life of human cadavers” by Mary Roach; “The Ghost Map: The Story of London’s Most Terrifying Epidemic and How It Changed Science, Cities, and the Modern World” by Steven Johnson; anything by Bill Bryson for a lot of knowledge and humour.
Tove Jansson (a Swedish writer) – she wrote the Moomin books
My guilty pleasures – mysteries. Authors: Henning Mankell (Swedish), Kathy Reichs (the forensic anthropologist; the serious Bones is based on her books. Books are so much better than the TV series), Gail Bowen – a Canadian writer.
    I think, that’s enough for now :-).

  10. Diogenes

What an interesting list! I see many of my faviorites here: A Wrinkle in Time, Pride and Prejudice, Cold Comfort Farm. I also love books by James Michener (Poland, Hawaii, The Source) and anything by Dickens.
I am currently reading “Felling the Ancient Oaks: How England Lost its Great Country Estates.”
Thank you for giving me many ideas for my next read.

  11. So many books in the list that I have enjoyed. What fun that was and I adored the images with them. I would love to have this stack of books waiting in a country cottage somewhere with nothing but time and a comfy daybed to while away the hours.
I’m not sure I could ever pick a number one favorite, I’ve loved so many, been touched by so many and still have yet to read so many.

  12. Barbara Snow

A few years ago I took a bookmaking class. We made our own paper, wrote some small poems, designed the pages, bound the books. It was a wonderful creative venture and I’d do it again in a heartbeat.
My favorite author right now – Jhumpa Lahire – her short story collection “Unaccustomed Earth” left me breathless – especially the last three stories.

  13. Your blog is still #1. Many favorites & new ones yet to explore… Thank you

  14. Corey, you rock! Thanks for the list. Hitting the book shops tomorrow..
**Tongue in Cheek is the first thing I read each day. I love, love, love your blog …xox

  15. What a wonderful list. thank you for posting it. I need to back and take notes on the wonderful books I’m not familiar with.
If I had to name one book that has become a favorite, truly a companion it would have to be HE AND I by Gabrielle Bossis – I only have the English translation. (someday I’d like to try to read the original French) They are Gabrielle’s journals, (selected entries) of her journals “alleged to contain the words of our Lord to a French Woman …” she lived from 1874-1950. Whether one believes her or not, the relationship she describes and the words of love she receives from the voice of Jesus reflect the relationship one would long to have with the Divine.
I had this book when I was younger, in France — it got lost in my mother’s moving… then one day few years ago it just fell in my hands in a used book shop — since then I’ve bought 2 or 3 other copies to have. from September 12 “I”ll help you pick up those dropped stitches of your life…Throw yourself into My arms , for I make whole.” Sublime, divine reading.
