Diving on the Tea Table in High Fashion

Scones, ireland, tea

Exactly at four in the afternoon, tea was set on a cloth covered table, an abundant bouquet of flowers was placed in the center, and around it teacups and saucers, spoons, sugar and cream.

"Tea" was provided by friends who brought homemade cakes: Chocolate, raspberry, banana…plus a variety of scones, tarts and little sandwiches one of them was a mixture of diced apples, raisins, walnuts, cucumber, with cream cheese, served on a hearty wheat berry bread.

My mouth watered.

My eyes grew wide.

My fingers wiggled at my side.

An older woman, a friend of Carrie's politely asked if she could serve me, "What do you fancy? sweet or savory?" As she reached for a tea plate and napkin.

My inner child got the best of me, and I gushed, "I would like to dive on top of the table with my mouth wide open and scoop everything into one delicious bite!" And for added measure I mimicked my words and licked my lips.

The older woman's brow went slightly upward, she did not know what to make of me.

I think I might have put my goof ball foot in my mouth. Oh my, if only I could have said, "A cucumber sandwich please."

  1. I know that inner child and I succumb to her often. I will often have dessert and not dinner!!

  2. “a variety of scones, tarts and little sandwiches” love, love love this!! I hope you had room to try all!

  3. Ooh lovely – I’m so glad that tea as an institution is still alive and well in Ireland! When I was growing up my aunt always had afternoon tea with about three cakes and various biscuits and probably bread and butter too. My grandmother really did have cucumber sandwiches – I loved them!

  4. 🙂 I would have felt the same way! And I’m sure she was delighted by you!

  5. If you had that reaction at my table, I’d be overjoyed! What a wonderful compliment!

  6. LMAO, you’re so funny Corey. I think I would’ve been disappointed if you said you were all dainty and asked for one cucumber sandwich 🙂 If I were asked if I preferred sweet or savory, my answer would’ve been, “Yes, please.” I definitely would’ve asked to sample them all.

  7. Would love to have seen the expression on your hosts’ face 😉 And if you can get the recipe for the sandwich that was made up of “diced apples, raisins, walnuts, cucumber, with cream cheese” hope you will share. Hosting a tea party next month and that just sounds sooooo yummy! Did they have a variety of teas already brewing in pots? Any pics of the table setting?

  8. Corey, you have made me smile this morning. I have the same feeling at a beautiful tea table, but just have not thought to put it into words. Definitely a compliment, I would say. I would love to see more pictures of this tea table and yes, if there is a recipe for that sandwich I would love it. You know this post has already been mentioned on an online tea group, so you will be having many tea visitors I do believe.

  9. laughing out loud at this tale…any other response simply would not have been you…..thank goodness for your true self….she is spirited- she is real -she is honest and SHE SAVORS ALL PLACED BEFORE HER…the child within….

  10. DId you sit with your purse in your lap and follow the ‘pinky up’ rule?

  11. Those scones look beautiful. Ours at home never turn out quite like that. Hope you have a great time!

  12. I would have hopped on the table with you. I want one of those scones!

  13. Corey,
Every one adored you and thought you were a delight!
Come back soon for more tea parties!

Not sure that “In High Fashion” exactly describes your proposed table dive…

  15. Corey – I love you! You made me laugh out loud. I thought I was the only one who felt like she answers stuff in the wrong (yet honest) way. I guess I just can’t help myself, but sometimes things just have a way of coming out! I would have had to say yes – sweet and savory! That sandwich does indeed sound yummy. Thank you for the smiles today.

Oh Corey, I do love you, you make my day every day.
Come to Australia and stay in my little home. I promise you can dive on my table anytime!
Bought some miniature candlesticks from your store and cant wait for them to arrive. Will send you a photo of them in my daughter’s dollshouse as soon as I can.

  18. Oh Corey, thank you for taking me on your trip to Ireland. I can feel my Irish genes quiver and quake! The color, the land, the food – delightful! Thank you.

You in Wondeland! Height of high tea! Thanks for taking us along.

You certainly made my day also with that delightful comment Corey…….I am very, very sure that the Hostess would have also been delighted and that she took your comment as a compliment.

  21. i love you!! you are a woman after my own heart with your sense of humor and i feel sorry for anyone who can not openly guffaw over such heartfelt passion and delight! life is for exuberance and way too short to censor any of the joy in it.

  22. I’d be hard put believing ‘anyone’ in Ireland, Irish or no, wouldn’t have had the wits to find your response entirely entertaining and delightful. Next time you’re there (you will go back) try the prawn/mayo and watercress on buttered wholemeal soda bread … it’s sure you’ll be asking for seconds!
