Cafe de Flore: The French Waiter

Cafe de Flore: The French Waiter.

Cafe Flore, the French waiter

Cafe de Flore. The French waiter in his long white apron, with a tray poised perfectly on his hand. Swished around, seriously, attentively, listening to the customer's wants, fulfilling their desires. A young women with legs up to the ceiling asked for a scissor with her coffee. Ease-dropping had I misunderstood her request? A scissor was carried out on the waiter's tray, she cut the tag off her new coat, placing the scissor and tag on the table. Not giving much of a thanks, the waiter not bothered, retrieved the scissor and left to attend the next table.

I felt like I was in a movie set, no, no, no, a dab of color in a work of art.

Cafe de Flore we arrived around eight in the evening for a dinner drink. The mood inside the cafe was contagious: The constant French chatter that sounded like birds chirping, the flow of wine, clicking glasses of Moet, the younger woman, the older man, the waiter's discretion as he corked another bottle of wine which balanced on his tray confidently. The waiter's serviette elegantly on his arm, he remained professionally distant yet aware of every movement.

He does not listen to the conversation as he wipes the leftover crumbs from the table on to his tray, he does not react to the flirtatious dance circling around him, he serves silently and with that is the canvas, the strongest color to the fame of Cafe de Flore.

I soaked it in, feeling part of the set, dared to dart my camera in his direction… it is after all a movie set isn't it? Life is art isn't it? I wanted to capture the moment…. no, no, no I wanted to be the moment…

I raised my hand, he came. I asked for another glass of Medoc and some olives, he smiled and for some reason I blushed.

September a year ago, I went to Café de Flore, alone, at 7 a.m. on a Sunday morning… with my camera. I had a café crème, orange juice, and a croissant. I would give anything to relive that morning!

  2. Funny, scissors with coffee. When we were in Paris we could not get butter with our bread. No matter how we pronounced beurre the waiters looked at us like we were crazy. We’re we?

  3. Perhaps the waiter smiled because he was seeing what you were seeing? I always thought that waiters/waitresses could write the steamiest trash novels. Beautiful photos, they caused me to think I was in a 40’s movie with Bogart and Bacall!

  4. Chris Wittmann

He has a nice smile too 🙂
I felt like I was right there with you Corey, terrific post! How are the autumn colors where you are? I’ve just come back from a trip around Lake Winnipesaukee and the trees are ablaze! I’m in heaven at this time of year..love it! How are the fall colors in France?

  5. Oh I do believe I would blush with that smile too. How delicious!

  6. Rebecca from the pacific northwest

Look at that smile! No wonder you blushed.

  7. I love your photos. They are so clear and crisp. They translate the moment. How did you tint the wine red on a black and white photo?

    Hi Karen
I used PICNIC which now is PIC MONKEY, an easy to use website to work with photos. It is free. I used the pen tool in the highlight section to tint the wine glass that had water in it.

Beautiful, just starting to change, mostly the color palette is in the vineyards.

    Hi Alan,
Yes, butter is not something they use on bread…. cheese yes, butter not so often.
Only at breakfast. A baguette in the morning in cut lengthwise with butter and it is called a tartine.
Bread with butter only for breakfast.
    Complicated is rule in France.
