Saturday Art Saves: Diogenes French Interior Style

French Interior, French Style

French Interior Style, Antique Collector Diogene's and D. Home

Each Saturday I focus on a different artist that I admire. From potters to painters, chefs to collectors, seamstress to songwriters, lifestyle to lovers… anyone who set the paintbrush, pastry brush, hands and heart on fire to create.

Those who inspire art to flow where it may…. My friend Diogenes and his vast collection of French Antiques.

While in Pasadena for SpellBound, Diogenes, a faithful blog reader of Tongue in Cheek, wrote and asked if we could meet. Without hesitation I said yes! We set up a date, and he wrote, "I'll pick you up in front of the hotel, at 10:30, in a black car."

Before skipping out to meet Diogenes and his partner D., the women gathered at Spellbound asked me if I knew this man "Diogenes"? I shook my head yes, "Well, through the blog I do, but in person — no."

They thought I was a bit mad, not to give it a second thought, to leave the hotel in a strange man's car. Though one thing I have learned from blogging is that if anyone takes time to read my blog, and wants to meet me… then I figure we must be kindred spirits.

At 10:30 sharp a black car pulled up in front of the hotel and two men got out… Instantly, I knew we were going to have a wonderful day. It felt like I had been friends with them all my life.

Diogenes said we had our day planned and away we went.

First stop… after we passed the boulevard of the stars, was an Auction House that Diogenes and D frequent. Everyone knew them. The auction house was stuffed silly with French antiques. I felt right at home with Louis This, Napoleon That, King So and So, Belle Epoque Clocks ticking and Diogenes and D..

Diogenes and D's style is exquisite, not a hair out place, masculine, classic, over sized paintings paired with gilded mirrors, Marie Antoinette worthy sconces, tied in with French antique wonders mixed with the perfect blend of contemporary art.

As you know I have the brocante bug which is a side kick illness to French antique collecting bug. Diogenes loves French antiques so much so that I thought maybe his middle name was Louis, he has the bigger bug badly!

As I walked around admiring the French Antiques I scratched my head wondering why I never thought to go to the French Auctions... Hello Ding Dong!

Diogenes has been to France many of times, and the antique markets he knows by heart.

Kindred spirits I tell you.

After the auction house we drove by amazing homes along the hillsides of Los Angeles. Later we stopped for lunch at Kings Road Restaurant.

I am not a coffee drinker, coffee never tastes as good as it smells. Though my sixth sense told me I should follow Diogene's lead. I ordered a Vanilla Cafe Latte. OH MY GOD! I would fly back to Kings Road Restaurant for another everyday if I could.

Just thinking about it my mouth is watering. Crazy.

We had a fabulous lunch, and talked constantly about anything and everything. Diogenes asked me if there was anything I wanted to see or do in Los Angeles before we continued on the planned adventure. I said I wanted to see his home! So off we went to see his home.

I imagined my friends back at SpellBound shaking their heads at me, "Crazy girl going to a stranger's home!"

Diogene and D share a lovely home, well appointed, antiques to awe at yet feel comfortable next to. They shared their stories of how they collected the pieces near and far, from San Francisco to Paris, how they transported and placed them in their home. Those of us who like interior design find talking about the process exhilarating. Each piece collected has a story, and the story is part of the colorful journey of collecting.

Long crystals hang from a bronze chandelier… found in Paris.

French antiques, reflections

French antiques, reflected in a mirror of Diogene's dining room.

French sconces

Large French antique sconces, side by side to a shadowy painting of pine trees.

Antiques, mirrors, bronze, clocks

Hints of black with flickers of gold sang well against the white painted and mirrored walls. The previous home owner use to work with mirrored glass. When he sold his home to Diogene and D., he left the one of kind pieces to them.

Bronze statue messenger

At the Auction House Diogenes and D. admired a bronze statue among many, later at their home I could see it fitting in well.

French Style with Modern art

Against a mirrored wall to give the small dining room a larger fell, a French antique commode sat, with a large painted piece in an antique frame on top of it. Given that the original piece of modern art would have cost two arms, one leg and two earlobes, Diogene was inspired to paint the painting himself. I wonder why none of my inspiration pumped out a piece of art? I love how he mixed modern with antiques, a design quality I admire, though am hopeless at accomplishing.

Diogene and D will have to come visit me!

Thank you Diogenes and D for the fantastic tour of Los Angeles area, the lovely lunch, the beautiful tour of your home, the vanilla cafe latte, the best ever margarita's at El Coyote(!!!) and for your friendship, thank you for the wonderful day together!

  5. Hi Corey,
I grabbed my coffee this morning and boy was I surprised when I got to your blog! We loved spending time with you, Corey…it just flew by…and I wish we could have shown you more of Los Angeles. You were so much fun to be with, we are kindred spirits, absolutely, and I feel lucky to have met you.
I love the pictures you took; you capture so much in each one.
As for the auction, the prices that day started out very high for everything. Sensing a trend, we went to see a movie after a couple hours. I went online later to check out what happened and the bronze statue sold for $250. Crazy, right? No reserve. The grise racetrack went well over estimate. I came away empty handed but there’s another auction in a couple days ;-). This time I’ll sit through the whole thing.
I hope you and FH make it back to LA. Our home is always open to you.

  6. Amazing home! Thank you to D&D for sharing it with us. What a wonderful day you all had. Yes, they MUST come & visit with you. I think you all have much to share with one another. N.

  8. Beautiful home. D&D – thank you for sharing. You couldn’t have a more wonderful photographer capturing your gorgeous home. Awesome adventure!

  9. Q & A for Diogenes:
    Dear Diogenes,
How does one wife convince a very modern, gray, monochromatic, husband to decorate in french?
    Signed,
    A secret, french-hoardering antique, wife.
    * A side note. What are your thoughts on men who wear white socks with sandals? This high heel wearing woman wants to know. Love your style!!

  10. Hi Laurie,
Thanks! I think modern and gray and monochromatic is the perfect foil for French antiques and old paintings. They will pop against that background. You can Google images of designers that mix things for inspiration:
    Alberto Pinto
    Pablo Paniagua
    Geoffrey Bradfield
If you are in SF, you have a wonderful resource at Bonham’s, the auction house. You can get some great deals…it’s where the dealers go.
White socks with sandals? Hmm…we’re finally getting some rain here in LA.

  11. Diogenes directed me to your blog to read this, and I am so grateful to see their home, filled as it is with beautiful pieces. We quite often discuss items at upcoming auctions, and commiserate with each other when we fail to win on what we bid for. Happily the success stories do allow for a stunning assemblage, as seen here!

  12. $250! Sorry you lost that one as it looked lovely.

  13. Just Wow!
    and beautiful!
    Lucky you!

  14. Hi Corey,
Lucky me, Diogenes is my brother. He and Danny are the best…and such exquisite taste! Sounds like you all had a great time together in LA. Thanks for sharing.

  15. Aahh love these guys and their home and style. So gracious of them to take you to so many lovely places.
It is nice to have the time to write to you again. The wedding consumed me for a month. My Granddaughter is now married. Thank you for the picture comment Corey.

  17. I felt the same way! I’ve bookmarked the auction house website.

  18. Love, love, love French antiques and browsing the markets. Thanks for a beautiful post.

  19. I recently discovered your blog and enjoyed this post very much. My husband and I have met over thirty bloggers including some of their family and one of the best perks of blogging is friendship. We’ve had perfect strangers to our home for lunch that I met through blogging and I felt as if I had known them all of my life. Diogenes & D’s home is over-the-top gorgeous and they are delightful. You are very fortunate to have them as readers. A wonderful read.

This is the second time I’ve written this comment. The first time I chose Preview and it disappeared. If for some reason it shows up twice, would you please delete it.

  20. I love the photos of their gorgeous home, but love the story of your meeting even more!

  21. jend’isère

The drama of your encounter unfolded in the natural interior of a setting which spells drama. Life is a stage…

  22. What a wonderful adventure! How generous of them to offer their day to you – and how wonderful of you to accept. I knew that I too had met kindred spirits through blogging when I received several e-mails of concern from thousands of miles away hoping that my family and I were safe during Hurricane Sandy – which we were. Wonderful connections.

  23. Hi N.
Lucky indeed! He spoke highly of you too!

  26. Diogenes, I googled your nom de Internet to figure which Greek we were dealing with. I came across this line, “He basically lived in nothing better than a corrugated cardboard box, and yet a happier person in Greece could not have been found.”
I’m having a having a hard time reconciling the your home and Diogenes’s box. 😉

  27. Corey, you have the best adventures!

  28. Hi Franca Bollo,
I did not know that. 🙂 On the list of Greek names (I wanted something different) his was one that started with a “D” like my real name, so easy to remember. I could have also chosen Dionysus, given that I enjoy a good glass of wine now and then, LOL.

  29. Rebecca from the pacific northwest

Franca, I do enjoy your comments. “Having a hard time reconciling…” makes me laugh!

  30. Rebecca from the pacific northwest

So happy that your hosts D and D allowed you to photograph them so we could see their nice faces! When I saw a reflection in a mirror only, I was thinking, aw shucks, this is all the view we’re going to get of them. So thanks for sharing with us.
Fun to read, days later, the report about missing out on the auction items. Sort of a “you were there” update.

  31. There is something about french made items that just screams “classy”. It really does, doesn’t it? Anyway, I think these are some great pictures, the designs are perfectly done. Thank you for posting these here.
