Saturday Art Saves: Tom and Susan Vieth

A Small Village in France

Every Saturday I focus on a different artist that I admire. From potters to painters, chefs to collectors, seamstress to songwriters, lifestyle to lovers… anyone who set the paintbrush, pastry brush, hands and heart on fire to create.

Those who inspire art to flow where it may.

"When Tom and Susan Vieth aren't pouring concrete, tiling floors, building kitchen cabinets, plastering walls or reconfiguring the entire back forty, Tom finds some peaceful moments to be an artist."

"Tom and Susan Vieth are Americans who live in France.
Tom is an artist.
Susan keeps everything in their lives somewhat straight so that
Tom can stay lost in his painting."
Love and humor makes good art, Tom and Susan have plenty of both.

"Tom’s paintings show his love for his adopted region, his love affair with the colors and lively vibrancy of the weekly markets, the exploration of the compositions of the ever-changing working fields that surround him, and the intimacy of small corners of the villages where one can sense the elegance and calm of layers of culture."

"Tom’s vision is to paint the things that he loves in a way that speaks to scenes you may have seen and of places you may have visited.  Mostly these paintings are about a sense of comfort, of being home.  Because Tom is never more than thirty minutes from home. No need to venture further. Every thing that he loves about painting is to be found here, inside and around Bourdeilles— the small village where they live in France."

"After 22 years of loving Vermont and having tremendous success with Tom’s art career they made a bold move to live in Bourdeilles, France."

"It all started ten years ago when Tom proposed to buy a house in France, so he could have a settled place to make his watercolors. Being the practical one Susan said, “No, that’s what one does when they are 60 – 70.” Tom’s response was that at that age they might not be able to make it to France. So 6 months later they had ‘the little house in France’."

Susan and Tom also offer tours and products of their region on their blog (listed below),

and joyful French watercolors from Tom’s sketch book.

  1. Delightful . . . I am thrilled Tom and Susan didn’t wait until their 60’s-70’s to live their dream.
Now . . . a visit to their site, thanks to you.

Oh how I love these beautiful paintings: their focus, the colours spectacular, confident brush strokes, whimsy, light and so much more. I want to know these places.
Thank you for igniting the desire to travel because of your wonderful art.
    Jill

  3. Delightful, witty paintings!
That first image, half-photo half-painting, made me do a double take, though 😉

  4. What beautiful paintings…reminds me of Raoul Dufy, but taking it a step further. They really capture the essence and mood of each place. And the light.

  5. Lovely paintings – I like the style and colors to enhance the scene and create a mood!
