I brought my friend a strawberry tart from the bakery across from the hospital. He ate it in four bites. After he swallowed the last strawberry, I told him instead of asking, "Let's leave here and go across the street for a drink."
He put on his sweater with a great effort. And we went downstairs, and walked out the front door.
He stood outside and breathed in after six weeks of being inside. I could see it did him good.
I had a hot chocolate, he had a mint syrup with water.
I dared to ask, "You seem happier today?"
He didn't smile when he said, "I am making an effort. I feel the same as I did yesterday."
I shook my head yes as I closed my eyes, trying to imagine his pain. Then I said, "Effort is a good direction, if you can do that it is extraordinary, I am proud of you. " I continued, "Each day try to be thankful for one thing, and say thank you to it."
He agreed, but I have learned that this is his way of stopping the conversation.
So I added, "Being thankful for one thing each day is like a key opening a door. We can be thankfully for the smallest of things…like mint syrup in water.
He laughed, and I was thankful for that.
What are you thankful for today?
