Each Saturday I focus on a different artist that I admire. From potters to painters, chefs to collectors, seamstress to songwriters, lifestyle to lovers… anyone who set the paintbrush, pastry brush, hands and heart on fire to create.

Those who inspire art to flow where it may.

I love companies that have a family history, that have stayed true to their beginnings and remain strong throughout the years, creating a tradition. Torani in San Francisco has done just that.

"In 1925, Rinaldo and Ezilda Torre visited family in Lucca, Italy. The two returned home to their native San Francisco with something very important: handwritten recipes, which they used to create authentic flavored syrups.

"These syrups helped Rinaldo and Ezilda reintroduce the Italian soda to their North Beach neighborhood. And the sodas were a hit. Years later, Torani helped record another hit: our syrup was used to create the world’s first flavored latte!"

"Today, we’re a global presence. But even though people all over the world recognize our iconic Torani bottle, we’ve remained a family-owned company — adhering to the high quality standards that Rinaldo and Ezilda set nearly 90 years ago. Each and every syrup, sauce, and smoothie is created with care and pride. That’s a promise from our entire family — including the more than 100 members that make up the Torani team."

"Way back we started with just five syrups. Today, you can use more than 100 of our naturally flavored syrups, sauces and beverage bases in coffees, sodas, teas, smoothies, cocktails and more. And we’re excited to bring you new taste traditions and flavors as we move forward."

"We are a family-owned business – we always have been. And that strong sense of family has guided our set of values. We believe we can do something meaningful.
From the moment Rinaldo and Ezilda founded Torani in 1925, our company has focused not only on business, but also on serving the community. We’ve always cared deeply about San Francisco – after all it’s our home. And the city has always supported us. Since our beginnings, we’ve worked with folks in our community to help make it a better place for everyone."

"Mixing their syrup recipes with sparkling waters, the Torres introduced the classic Italian soda to local cafes, and soon began mixing, blending and selling Torani Syrups from their Italian wholesale grocery.

In 1957, the Torre's son-in-law, Harry Lucheta, took over the business and oversaw Torani's growth from a small local San Francisco business to an international brand.

Torani can be added to coffee, espresso beverages, cocktails, soda and other beverages."

  1. Medium latte, 2% milk, Torani amaretto syrup is a favorite treat of mine.

  2. I will be the first to admit, I have never tasted any Torani syrups. It was a long time before I even knew what they were used for. I only drink black coffee, so venturing into flavors was an unknown to me. I do admire a family business that has been successful.

  3. Try mixing some of the hazelnut syrup into chocolate desserts (even into chocolate truffles) — yummmmm! Mostly, though, I just like Torani berry syrups mixed into sparkling water. You’re making me so homesick for the Bay Area!

Absolutely love Torani Peanut Butter syrup blended with a mocha. The best! Blessings, Kimberly

  5. I never knew the history of Torani, thanks! I love to drizzle a little of the amaretto in my coffee for a treat.

  6. I have never tasted their syrups – the company culture is impressive and admirable!

  7. Wandering around Pinterest with my Sunday coffee mug in my hand, shortly before intending to get up and start the day, I found you… Somebody had pinned one of your brocantes… I followed the image, landed on your blog and that was it… I have been promenading through your stories, were laughing tears reading your steps on how you met your husband, was touched by your thoughts on the dark sides of life that you, too, are encountering… I, too, am married to a French, we keep spending our holidays with my parents in law in Aix-en-Provence and I feel so nearby reading your posts and looking at the images. Brocante is my passion and I will certainly try to find you the next time I am down South. Until then I wish those shadows in your present lfe give way to the spring sun and the conscience of the inner beauty of things around us again.. Greets, Manu

  8. Reminds me so much of my time in SF. Happy to be back here Corey – I forgot how well you write.

How could I have overlooked their peach syrup? Good not only alone in soda, but mixed with raspberry (sort of a Melba beverage!).
