Sweet Little Find at the Brocante

Sweet Little Find at the Brocante

French Brocante.

Early morning.

Sweet little find.

Baby silver napkin rings.

I have never seen such a thing.

Sweet Little Find at the Brocante

French Husband has in the last few years followed me to the brocantes. Mainly because he knows I fall asleep at the wheel, and he wants to keep me safe.

So sweet.

and helpful.

and definitely he makes it more fun… most of the time that is.

Though sometimes he can be, um, bad for business. He is sentimental you see, and wants to keep everything, especially if I talk about the purchase, or say something such as, "Oh look at this! Oh we should keep it! For our future grandchildren." Then BAM, he fixates on that, and that is that.

I cannot say certain things such as:

"I have never seen such a thing.

Hard to find.

A great deal.

A baby's…

Sweet, has survived all these years.

Grandchildren.

Wouldn't this look good in our house."

French Husband is a baby when it comes to parting with things. Gee, I doubt he would even let his future grandchildren even touch the napkin rings.

So I should have bought the silver baby napkin rings and not uttered a word. But oh no, did I do that? Heck no. I exclaimed, "Oh look at those sweet little baby napkin rings, I have never seen such a thing! Wouldn't they be sweet to use at Christmas at our house when we have grandchildren?"

And when the dealer said ten Euros for all of them. I scooped them up without a word of negotiating.

French Husband knew that meant it was a good deal.

From that moment on he pestered me with:

"You ar going to keep them aren't you?"

"I think we should keep them."

"I want to keep them."

"Let me buy them from you."

Seriously, he offers to buy them from me. That is when I have to stop and set him straight. Bring him back to reality. Shake him up a bit and say something such as, "Let's go make out in the car."

  1. You know exactly what you’re doing Corey! 🙂 Keep it going! Those baby napkin rings are so darling…I am probably more like Yann in keeping things and more like you in finding and buying them! Happy hunting…

  2. until there are grandchildren, shine them up, hang them from the Christmas tree with beautiful ribbons or lace; let them hold Easter eggs in the center of the table; keep them out where you can enjoy them.

  3. The only time I ever made out in a car, it was parked in the garage of my 10th grade boyfriend (neither one of us had a license). I think I have a lot of catching up to do!

  4. That is so funny, yes you do know what you are doing. Lets go make out in the car, great distraction move. Checkmate!

  5. Visiting from Polonica: Home Again. We’ve moved from our home in the Auvergne, but I loved our little local marche aux puce! Your blog remonds me of all the beautiful things we found there, some of which now grace my home here in South Carolina. Lovely to have met you…

  6. sweet post – I really like your FH…. he seems a true love. As much as Hero Husband loves me; he CANNOT abide the word brocante… :/

  7. Definitely keepers-Yann and the baby napkin rings. Could you use the rings as little holders for Easter eggs this month?

Yes, if making out with the love of your life when the moment strikes you is part of the best things, then certainly, you do know what you are doing!

He offered to buy them from you….OK, that is the funniest thing I’ve heard in a while. Yes, there is a whole psychology to buying goodies, whether at the brocante or at the auction. Sometimes I think we need the same skills as a poker player.

  10. I have been brocanting for approx 30 years now (in America they are called flea markets or antique shows ) and if I had a dime for every time I over heard a husband say “You should buy it” to his wife I would have about 40 cents ! I want you to send me some French water Corey. Not bottled I want it straight out of your kitchen tap…ASAP..because I am convinced that is it.
P.S. I received the plaster piece yesterday and love it with the others on my coffee table. Merci Cheri !

  11. Oh DO keep them.

  12. so precious … for so many reasons!

  13. Brenda L. from TN.

Oh! Corey! NO ONE WOULD EVER THINK YOU WERE STUPID! Girl, you are SOOOOO smart! making out in the back seat? Brillant!
I, too, have never seen such tiny napkin rings…not at flea markets, antique stores,
Estate Sales, auctions or any Yard/Garage/Tag sale…EVER!
They are precious! Shine them up and hang them from ribbons in a window.

  14. In every sense of the phrase, indeed you do! 🙂

These are the sweetest things I’ve ever seen. Yes, keep them.

  16. Oh my!!! I would have swooped them up as well. I never have seen itty bitty napkin rings like that. So many ideas for their use until the grand cherubs arrive. 🙂

  17. i love you corey! today was an enchanting story. i love how you describe french husband. he is adorable.
how can you remember what not to say to trigger his reaction? oh my!
love your option: making out in the car… you and yann.. perfection

  18. Totes adorbs! – (as the young folk say)

  19. Keep them…keep him…and keep making out! Love this post.

  20. Oh Corey…you make me laugh. I have this visual of you and Yann making out in the parking lot. I’m going to be on the lookout for that at every brocante I go to. Men are so easily distracted, n’est pas?

  21. jend’isère

These babies are as photographed a “supplément de la carte de France”.

  22. Win, win, win 🙂 What a wonderful day !
I think you do know what you are doing more than you realize 🙂

  23. I collect old napkin rings, and, like everyone else, have never seen baby napkin rings. They are darling! What are the names?
I recently made a series of ceramic rabbit heads using the names from my napkin rings; Dick, Bun, Judith, Clarice, Zita, Edna…

men are sentimental creatures, more than we think. My hubby always wants to rescue pottery I have made and banished to the bone pile, or, just like Yann he has offered to buy something I have made so that I don’t sell it.

  25. Two great bargains in one morning!

  26. I’ll send you some water, lol!

  27. Love this story. Absolutely precious napkin rings, and even more precious to have fun making out in the parking lot! Money cannot buy that kind of love and lasting affection and attraction. what a Beautiful marriage ! xxx Jody

  28. Corey Darling and Sweet Story What a wonderful verse for the first grand baby book plus the photo too!
PS I have never seen these either so they are a must keep!

  29. Precious napkins rings – I agree with using them as a decoration for now!

  30. Smiling! Oh I would have a hard time sending them on too. On the Christmas tree or somewhere in your home they really must reside.

  31. FH – true love, best friend. Those napkin rings are — so sweet.
