The Mediterranean Sea + France = A Glorious Sunday

Provence coastline

The blue Mediterranean it never fails to please, an enticing kaleidoscope of magical blues, one shade prettier than another. If you follow the color out to the sea… well you might never come back.

The Mediterranean Sea + France = A Glorious Sunday. We hopped on a small boat from the small port town of Cassis, rode the waves out to a sea of swirling blues.

Cassis

Take a seat on the outside of the boat, yes it could chilly, and possible wet, but to see the giant stone canyon walls along the coast, with the various formations, is worth the ride on the outside of the boat.

You will be tempted to dive in.

A kaleidoscope of magical blues, I kid you not!

Straight up,

Grabs me every time.

I cannot stand how achingly beautiful it is.

Majestic knows no other crown.

Long long time ago when Chelsea was three, French Husband took our friend Paul and his eight year old daughter Brittney (our Godchild who was recently married) out to the cliffs along Cassis.

Those two Dads jumped off the cliffs with their daughters.

The daughters had a wonderful adventure.

The mothers had a fit when they found out…

A royal fit.

Okay just to set the record straight, not the cliffs above but the ones below on the left….

Why hang out on the beach drinking a pastis?

When you can jump in.

The boat tours are available along the port in Cassis. They leave (during the summer) every thirty minutes, or when the boat is full. Several tour options are avaiable, the longest one is an hour and a half, less than 20 Euros per person.

Do not go out if the Mistral is blowing and you see white caps on the waves… unless you don't mind getting wet, and your stomach doesn't do somersaults.

  1. Although we love going to Cassis for a day trip (but not in high season!) we never managed to go on a boat tour to the Calanques. Every time we tried, the weather wasn’t as it should be.
So I am more than happy to see your pictures of this unforgetable tour and hope that maybe this year we can do it ourselves.
Thank you so much for bringing the South of France into my home today and shorten the time until our trip to Haute Provence in a few weeks.
    Amicalement, Monika

I have done this boat trip more than once and it never fails to delight. (Never in a Mistral though…:)

Alas, we were in Cassis too early in the year for the boat tour, but next time…
There’s no shade of blue that isn’t gorgeous!

Absolutely gorgeous! The other day I was watching Montalbano (an Italian detective series). The main character lives in a house right on the Mediterranen. So many different beautiful shades of blue in the sea!

  12. It was just here…
    the last moment in France.

  13. Thanks for sharing, Corey. You know I love your fabulous shots of my favorite places in the world. . . Please, God, let me get there one day!

  14. My family and I took this boat trip in early June and it was just as amazing as you say. The Mistral was mighty that day, but as we were only there for the day we took a chance. An hour and a half later we were back on land, soaking wet, with huge smiles plastered to our faces. It was a wild, but amazing, ride! I’m surprised none of us got sick (we sat in the front, facing forward–would that make a difference?). The cliffs and the sea were just breathtaking. I, too, highly recommend it. So glad you posted about Cassis–brings back lovely memories.

once again, a page from our trip. the wind was so great we had a hard time just standing on the beach for the must have photo. and the water was so choppy it was hard to see the color. but did we care? no! we were there! and then we went in and had the best ever mussels and wine ever! we were happy campers!
