The Spirit of the Tour de France

Tour de France riding like the wind

Several times I have had the pleasure to stand by and watch the Tour de France ride by.

It is all day experience for a nanosecond pleasure. Well what I mean is it is a slow build up:

First you find out where the Tour de France will be, then you must go early in the morning and find you spot. The roads around, connecting, and crossing are closed.

Second you wait. And wait. Wait some more. Until you start to hear the distant buzz of cars and motorcycles, as they pass by the throw little trinkets and souvenirs to the crowd. Nearly the entire stage is lined with fans.

The Champs Elysees had 350,000 people alone.

I was one of them.

Thirdly, the shout of joy comes softly and as the racers come closer so does the sound of joy. Until it is right at your feet, amidst the crowd bursting into crazy cheer there is the sound of the tires fiercely carressing the pavement … it is a sound of passion burning… the spirit of the Tour de France.

Bravo Chris Froome and team!

I love your photo! : ) Truly the spirit of the riders. Bravo to all the fans for your strong support.

  2. As I was watching last night, I wondered if you were there cheering them on!

  3. How exciting to be there!
I remember the one time I got to watch it on a huge screen and I thought that was exciting.

  4. As we watched it yesterday, I was wondering if you were in the masses. Amazing light show. Aside from enjoying the 3 weeks of cycling, it feels like a nice trip through France from the couch.

Frank and I are going to be going through major withdrawal! We have been watching the tour faithfully every night. So exciting. Glad to know you were there cheering them on. Lucky you!

I enjoyed seeing all the absolutely beautiful sights in France on tv, some great shots of castles, landscapes and in Paris of course. We were thinking about you!

I watch the tour faithfully every year. It was spectacular! I loved this year’s route. Going through withdrawal today…..was up at 6AM and nothing to watch. I was hoping you would have several photos today to help me get through but to my dismay..I am not on facebook. Glad you were there and experienced the finale.

  8. Sigh to the max. For each and every day we sat by the telly every night (and sometimes day, too, if we could!). We watched as many minutes as we could. The finale was one of the most breathtaking things I’d seen. I’m a bit envious you got to see it in person. Definitely on my bucket list — even with the waiting!
