Saturday Art Saves: Sue Tripp

Every Saturday I focus on a different artist that I admire. From potters to painters, chefs to collectors, seamstress to songwriters, lifestyle to lovers… anyone who set the paintbrush, pastry brush, hands and heart on fire to create.

Those who inspire art to flow where it may.

Sue’s artwork is created on ‘up-cycled’ items
that she found at the flea markets, thrift stores and garage sales.

Sue said, “Usually bowls, trays, boxes, but I have moved on to furniture.
I sand the item down to original raw wood then paint
with non toxic paint, one dot at a time on one side but do leave
the natural wood shining through. I put a finish on them that allows
them to be used inside or outside.”

“I work in a meditative mode while I listen to
classical music or quite peaceful music.”
My designs all follow the grain of whatever wood
I’m working on and all the pieces end up feeling very organic
and have a ‘native’ feeling.”

“I was influenced by the Australian Aboriginal dot art,
tried to do some of their designs, then started studying the history
of how they developed their “Dreaming” paintings.” ”

“An awareness flowed through my body that since I wasn’t Aboriginal
I was fraudulent in trying to do what they have worked on for thousands
of years as part of their spiritual paths. A No, No.”
“Now, I work with nature and allow it to tell me
where to go with the design
and the color of the wood tells me which colors it wants to be.
The tactile surface leads people to reach out
and touch which makes me very happy.”
Sue’s is working on creating her designs on fabric.

  1. Lovely works, Sue — Georges Seurat would be so proud! Hope you and yours came out of the recent wildfires safe and sound.

  2. Amazing that she achieves this with paint! Beautiful work, I thought it was mosaics on first glance.

  3. That was my initial impression too, Diogenes!

  4. Lovely work.

  5. The pointillism and upcycled materials made me think of this artist I just saw at the Visionary Art Museum in Baltimore – she did a lot of her very detailed work on paper plates (and sadly it didn’t survive).

She doesn’t have a website? I’d like to see more.
