Around the Corner

Church stain glass window

One of the many things that I enjoy about living in France, is the constant surprise that seems to be waiting around every corner.

It never fails.

A stone wall, or the changing colors of the seasons, a lace curtain in an old window, a chimney sweep, tiled roofs, baguettes stacked in a basket on a baker's rack… things that are a given in France, that live on and on, and yet never dull my senses.

Instead a constant surprise, or awe, wonder! Beauty to capture.

Today a massive stone wall with three impressive stain glass windows appeared.

Why hadn't I ever walked behind the church before?

Stone mason what a story you left behind:

"Make it last, make it beautifully strong."

Nature's Stain GlassThe story, the history, often without words, often without fanfare. Simple, steadfast, strong, forever giving.

The awe factor waiting around the corner:

Cobblestones, wooden shutters, ironstone cup and saucer waiting on a sturdy iron base bistro table… no paper cup of coffee on the go.

The everyday wonder that I am so grateful to call home.

  1. Beautiful windows. I wonder if the stone was left rough because it’s the back of the building?

  2. You are one lucky lady! For many reasons!I say adieu and farewell as we head back to the golden state! The apartment is beautiful readers,I am so thrilled I was able to stay and partake in the Parisian lifestyle.Corey and French Husband did a WONDERFUL job!!!

  3. You write so beautifully Corey and have a sensitive eye for spirit of place. I love the juxtaposition of the fragile stain-glass with the robustness of the old stone. An image that takes us far into metaphorical thinking about life itself. Mai

  4. Thank you for that vivid description, so much of what I love. My parents were of french descent, a paper cup would never do. When they did anything, it lasted and had quality and strength and practicality.

Each of us needs to be grateful and appreciative of our surroundings however humble…and your’s are especially beautiful. My joy is watching the ever-changing light on the oak trees outside my studio/office window. Often it is the little things that mean the most.

  6. I love that you constantly “stop to smell the roses”! I love architecture and the little everyday tidbits of life and you help to bring France alive. Thank you for relaying such beauty and wonder. Hugs for another wonderful, appreciative day, Corey!

Your beautiful pictures and thoughts remind us that we must learn to stop and appreciate the ordinary, the overlooked beauty around us. The throwaway part of life is just that, to be thrown away.

  8. Reading your reflective observations felt like being wrapped in a warm blanket, soothing and safe.
This morning, the “secret garden” I look out into from my bedroom window was blanketed by thick fog, reaching down to the tree tops, rendering them almost invisible and misty below. Silence reigned, interruped suddenly by the distinctive caw of a Hooded Crowm landing on a branch high in the tree, with one last “cha-cha”, and then silence again.
