The antique dealer that sold me this cigarette finger ring had the cigarette stump attached to it that is how I knew what it was. Later she explained how it worked.

"A cigarette holder ring consisting of a resiliently contractible ring band operable to fit snugly on any portion of the wearer's finger, and a cigarette holding clip adapted normally to be folded extremely inconspicuously into the crown portion of the ring band, but to be extended therefrom to hold a cigarette, the clip being universally movably relative to the ring band to hold the cigarette in any position relative to his finger most suitable to any individual user." Louis-armstrong cigarette finger ring

"This cigarette holder irresistably brings to mind the Flappers of the 1920s, who wouldn't want to stain their fingers with nicotine, and would have taken great delight in swanning around with their cigarette held away in this 14kt gold holder, one end clasping the cigarette, the other round the finger to be elegantly waved at friends or alluring strangers." 1. There was a link to your blog a while back on one of the blogs I read – I kept the link but can’t remember which blog it was. So I came for a visit and have to admit that I have never seen a cigarette holder ring – is it French? My father used to go to many “ventes aux enchères” in Paris, mostly rue Drouot, but he never brought back something like that – even though he smoked Gauloises.

  2. So, as Franca said, it’s basically a roach clip, lol.

  3. Diogenes and Franca, you two gotta meet. I just dawned at me what a roach clip is. Slow I know. I literally thought you were talking about a roach like in bug.

  4. What clever thing do we use today will seem completely ridiculous in 100 years? Great brocante find. I love the lost history that you uncover.

  5. It could be a roach clip. Nothing keeps it from being a roach clip. It all depends on the user. Will it become a roach clip? THAT is the question…

  12. I was just reading Carla couson’s blog about the contessa … Which took me to a page showing the apartment. Where she stayed …..I kept thinking this looks familiar and sure enough there was the give-away … your Paris map. Very small world

Was just going to say — Franca Bollo, Diogenes, and I were all right, just different type of leaf in the cigarette. But Diogenes beat me to it.

  15. I think you three are a bird of the same feather! Or a leaf from the same plant. 🙂

  16. Franca Bollo

Pooh … Franca was first. Roach clip … cigarette holder … ils sont la même chose. They both hold a burning butt (and not the kind you find on Baker Beach).

  17. Well I never! Congrats to the winners.

  18. I could see it working as a tooth puller!
