Snow! Not in Paris but in Provence

Going home in the snow

We are going to drive back to Marseille from Paris.

We heard the autoroute (Freeway) has been closed off and on, and that the train had to take a detour, due to the snow. Seriously what are we heading into?

Why are we going home, is what I want to know?

Chelsea and Sacha are coming with us, the four of us snug-cozy on a midnight ride, nine hours not counting the snow!

Chelsea made sandwiches, bought snacks, fruit and cookies, a feast on the go, the American way.

The three of them are going to take turns driving… I will be asleep before we leave Paris, if not I will post night time photos of us in the car. Not much to see when you drive at night.

The above photo is of Belle and Sebastien, think Lassie. French Husband gets all sentimental and cute, and boyish when he watches it on his cell phone. The poster above indictates there is a movie of Belle and Sebastien coming out.

Going Home with my family altogether for nine hours in the car, at night, heading towards snow with an American picnic in hand.

Do you like car trips?

  1. I love road trips – I drive from Los Angeles to Gilroy, San Jose and Santa Cruz quite often to visit family. I love stopping in San Luis Obispo for lunch or dinner depending on which way I’m going. Safe Travels! xxoo

  2. Ah, Belle and Sebastian. My Skylar, who is currently studying architecture in Paris, loved that show when he was little. I love that French Husband loves it, too. I hope that the movie will be shown here, in the US so that my granddaughter can enjoy it. Thank you for sharing that photo. And, I am happy that your California self slept happily through the snow!

  3. My dog looks exactly like that, Corey! He can see it at Christmas when you’re here, if you’d like!

  4. How wonderful – you must be so happy to have your family together for this event. As the family gets older, these moments become rare. Enjoy every sleepy, cozy-cuddly moment!!

  5. Love car trips, especially with my kids. Some of our fondest memories. I get to take another one after Christmas break to drive my son back to school in Florida. 16 hours. We always listen to Harry Potter CDs because we love Jim Dale’s voices.

  6. I love road trips but not when the entire world is driving or flying like @ thanksgiving. I hate sitting in traffic. I had a wonderful road trip in the fall when I helped my daughter drive her car from Boston to Seattle. Be safe in the snow!

  7. My crazy brood loves car trips. Just this summer we drove from North Idaho to Tennessee. It was a great time and the boys have mentioned that it was one of their favorite trips and it was by far our longest to date. Blessings~Kimberly

  8. I do love car trips and ALWAYS have-I never selpt if we were driving any distance-I would talk and talk with my mom and dad-then I would ask are we almost there yet EVERY TIME! This post has made me smile-safe travels!

  9. I love road trips. Have driven from Alabama to Maine, Alabama to northwest Montana, Alabama to the Grand Canyon, and those are just the longest ones! Always with my kids and I have so many fond memories from those trips.

  10. Take care and enjoy the nap and the picnic.
Yes, I love to do road trips with picnics,
but I don’t sleep because I must keep the driver
    awake.

  11. Road/car trips are one of my absolute favorite things to do. Oh to be on your trip with Yann, Sacha and Chelsea! Don’t sleep the whole way, you might miss out on some fun sites and great conversations.

Traveling mercies for you and your family!

My biggest road trip was across the United States. Travelling from California to New York, we went through the Midwest on the way out, and the southern states on the way back. There is no other way to really experience the country, the people, and the sights. Kind of like living the song entitled “America”..purple mountain majesties, from sea to shining sea.

  14. Every time I drive either to or from France with Hero Husband, I try to make it a ‘picnic’ – always having bottled water, washed apples & fruits, sliced bread or a crusty baguette (oh, the car afterwards!!! call the chickens….), cheeses cut in bite sizes, some charcuterie, maybe yoghurts, small purées (the French have a rich and tasty collection of them, always apple puree & something else – delicious), sometimes leftover salads – not to forget suitable dishes, napkins… I only regret that as of this week we no longer can have our meal at a table outside, the French have without any doubt the most beautiful, clean and festive rest areas (with clean toilets!!!).
So wishing you a safe trip home, wish us the same, we have a seven hour trip (if there is no snow!!) and HH does this EVERY WEEKEND – twice, coming home and going back – that’s 14hrs in the car, weekend after weekend. THAT is REAL LOVE my friends…. borings, dependable, wonderful love – and every time he returns to me, greyer than the streets of Paris, after a day at work and 7hrs driving in the dark – and all I can do is to lead him to a fauteuil, bring a mug of tea and see him go to bed 5’ later and sleep 6’ later. Then I thank God for having returned the Love of my Life without accident or incident – again!
So, let’s all travel safely, some over long distances, others on difficult and obstacle-laden stretches of life, others making it painfully through another day of illness, disaster, poverty, or celebrating a birthday (two in my immediate circle!) or….

  15. I do, especially with friends, lots of talk and laugh….

Why are you not taking one of those wonderful French trains (and renting a car in Marseille)? Even in the U.S., we much prefer train over car travel, and we drive only if we are taking our dogs with us. (Hence our upcoming round trip by car to San Francisco for a Christmas rendezvous with our whole tribe.) With every wish for safe travels, Leslie
