So French we are in Aix with Alice from Australia.

Door knocker

Rain was the unexpected alarm clock that woke us up for the market in Aix (pronounced by saying "X".) Every Thursday Aix has a large colorful Provencal market: Fruit, vegetables, cheese, clothes, pottery ware, linens, brocante, flowers… but not today.

The when someone comes from another country to visit, rain should not stop you from taking the view in, even if it soaks you. We piled on rain gear and headed to Aix.

Cours Mirabeau in winter with rain isn't as lovely as a sunny day in summer. But the Pizza on the corner of "Les Deux Garcons" is never closed and serves up the best without fail. Les Deux Garcons history, atmosphere is tempting, but the Capri pizza stand on the side is far better for flavor and local color. It cannot be missed. This is a secret you will want to mark down: LOCAL FLAVOR and COLOR Capri Pizza in AIX. Simple, fast, delicious and inexpensive.

Provence local color

I know what you are thinking… or I should say I guess I know what you might be thinking:

Where is a photo of the Cours Mirabeau?

Where is a photo of Les Deux Garcons? Or a least a photo of the PIZZA!

Yeah, yeah, I know I am a flake. Door knockers, shutters, brocante… instead of facts and figure.

True photo journalism: Take photo of Pizza.

Instead: I eat it, wipe my mouth, then think, "Oh look at the peeling shutter, so cool, so local color!"

Why any of you follow me is beyond me. I am a poor tour guide. Instead of point to the historical fact, you most likely will be eating Italian pizza on the most famous street in Aix. But I guarantee you will remember IT!

Aix en provence place albertas

Place d' Albertas in Aix en Provence.

A bit of touristic information…

"In the very center of the old city lies a reminder of the preferred hobby of gentleman with a little extra time and money to spend: A brothel. Town legend has it that Aix's prostitutes made their home on the Rue Espariat.

In 1745, Georges Vallon Jean-Baptiste d'Albertas bought a private house on the Rue Espariat, hoping to showcase his wealth through dramatic architecture and style. What he did not realize was that he had moved next door to the ancient brothel, whose second-story balconies featured metal-work penises as a way of announcing the house to potential customers." Via Atlas Obscura

Instead of taking a photo of the balconies, I took a photo of a bird on the fountain that was created in 1920 something. I am truly a ding dong when it comes to doing the normal expected thing.

I once wrote about the Albertas Park…

Jacob's bakery aix en provence

Baguettes aix en provence

We walked by a chain bakery called Jacob's that has a charming interior, they use old furniture to display their baguettes.

French baguettes and breads

With lovely baskets to showcase their baked goods.

Photogenic place.

Chocolate chip cookies French style

French Husband noticed the French chocolate chip cookies at Jaclob's and had to have one.

"Your mother's are so good." He offered. Anyone who knows French Husband knows he loves to say, "So good." for most everything worthy. Though my mother's chocolate chip cookies are superior to any French chocolate chip cookie I have ever had.

My mother does not live in France, and my chocolate chip cookies are not happening, Jacob's had some so he bought one.

Sharing a French chocolate chip cookie

And being the French tour guides that we are, I am throwing French Husband into the mix since it was his idea to buy and share a chocolate chip cookie. We bought a cookie instead of a baguette.

So French we are in Aix with Alice from Australia.

So good this post as for the door knocker and old shutter not so good.

  2. Sounds like a lovely experience for Alice from Australia. Aix is one of my favorite cities.

  3. So good that you provided a link for the iron work on the balconies if you weren’t going to show them! Laughed out loud at that bit of history.

  4. Sounds like everyone has their “baguettes” on display in Aix 😉
I love a good chocolate chip cookie (one of my faves) but anything but a really good one is a waste of calories.
Love when you show us photos of Aix and the rest of France.

  5. You are such a wonderful tourist guide!! No doubt about it. My sister is planning on visiting the area and was thinking of staying in Aix for a couple of nights – do you know of any great places to stay locally? Would Aix be the place to stay or could you recommend somewhere else in order to explore the local area?
many thanks for any suggestions! I shall also search earlier posts to see if you have already covered this!
    Thanks once again Corey.

  6. X looks wonderful, even in the rain.
It is 85 degrees here in LA, so we are at the beach in Santa Monica watching the waves crash. Not a cloud in the sky. Ocean warm enough for a swim.

I see mimosa behind the cookies, so Spring is not far off. I was married at the Mairie to my Aixois French husband, and love it still.

  8. oh my gosh, drooling again, look at that huge cookie, and those baguettes, wow, I need to get off carbs though, a craving of mine with olive oil, yummie…..love the door…..oh I love it over there ~xo

  9. Thanks for the smiles.
Next time that balcony and a baguette, please.

  10. Beautiful experience for you all.
    I love all you share.
    Love Jeanne

  11. Corey, have you read MFK Fisher’s wonderful book, “Two Towns in Provence” ? She captures so much of what I love about Aix.

  12. What a lovely day you had and your photos are great! Enjoyed every unexpected one of them

  13. Pat Herndon

Corey, we follow you because you have the soul, the eye and the vocabulary of a poet. I love all the local color you photograph on doors, walls and shutters. I often use them as inspiration to paint a piece of furniture, a frame or garden pot. Keep them coming–sorry Mat.

  14. I am so glad you don’t take photos of the pizza. Boring! I would much rather see the bird on the fountain, the bread and the cookies at the bakery, and make up the rest with my imagination. 🙂

  15. Karen Carson

You photograph the same types of things that I love to photograph! Which is why your posts are so visually interesting along with the narrative. Today I was touring Aix vicariously with you all!

  16. Love all your photos + keep em coming + what a special day for Alice from Australia. xxpeggybraswelldesign.com

  17. I am chuckling big time, Corey, at how cute you are! It’s because you are so human (and you do what I do, which is eat first then regret missed photo of food/restaurant later! Darn!). But following your blog for a couple of years, I have seen lots of gorgeous French food photos, so you’ve made up for it and the bread above with crusty baguettes creatively displayed has my mouth watering. (Wish I had even a bite here in Florida to go with a morning cup of coffee!) You are a refreshing (non-pretentious) blog writer — that’s why I follow you. (I can find blog purists and arrogant snobs all over the internet writing about France, but you are an American with such a delightful view point.) Don’t stop posting! Love your writer’s voice!! Hugs to you!

  18. Alice…Aix…antiques…appetite…
all get an A from me! xo jody

  19. “Where is a photo of the Cours Mirabeau? Where is a photo of Les Deux Garcons? Or a least a photo of the PIZZA!”
Look on the bright side: Now you have an excuse to go back there sometime!

  20. So Yann loves to say “So good” for most everything worthy. I bet he says (and sings?) “C’est si bon” a lot, too!

  21. What a gift to see my daughter sharing the beauty of Corey. I have known Corey for many years. She can create the most magical spaces both in terms of visual beauty but also within relationships. She see things of deep value that are not readily obvious to others…..and she can make you laugh so hard that it hurts! I am the lucky one to have her as a friend and now Alice knows her beauty also.

  22. Oh my gosh, you’ve made me giggle! 🙂
