Breaking News: Breaking an Old Bakery

A bakery in town that has been around since the 1800s is closing.

For years I have admired the hand painted canvas ceiling of four seasonal angels gathering fruit for jam. It is worn, discolored from being in a bakery, but still beautiful.

Yesterday when I saw the construction workers inside the bakery tearing things down… I quickly rushed inside, "Hello? Hello?" Nervously I asked about the canvas…

The owner said I could buy it. I hope to save it… But what am I going to do with a three meter by three meter ceiling canvas…

Monday I have to make a decision, I will take photos as I did not go with my camera yesterday.

  1. Buy it, or you will be always wondering why you didn’t.

Sounds wonderful!! Can it be divided up? I want it!

  3. Corey it seems as if it was meant for you- some how you will find a way to make it work…

Bien sur you will buy it! You would not want it fall into the wrong hands. How did they set the price?

  5. I’m sure you can sell it on your online brocante store. Maybe you should buy another apartment somewhere and put the painting on the ceiling there. What a great find.

  6. Use it on a wall, or apply it to your ceiling. If not, I’m sure your online shop will find a buyer.
So sad that this bakery is closing…what a loss!

Ditto what Susan and Star said. You could always hang it on your ceiling. Or separate the four angels.

  8. Would it fit on an outside wall into your garden? could it be weatherized?

  9. Whatever you do, do buy it or you will regret it. Figure out what to do with it later.

  10. I am not familiar with meters… But I take it, this is kind of huge.
Best of luck, with figuring this out. It is one of those things, which _should_ be saved. And it’s history written up and accompany it, to a new and loving home.

Corey, install it on your guest bedroom ceiling I will admire it when I come to stay next year ; )

  12. So sad to hear another bakery is closing. Is this the one you said was just 50 steps away? Or maybe that was the pâtisserie. You will make the right decision, but it seems it should stay there in the village somehow someway.

  13. What an amazing score!!
You can worry later about what to do with it, but now the important thing is to get it, safe and sound.
I hope it’s not the bakery closest to your house! I’m always sad to hear of bakeries closing in France… they are so much a part of everyday life.
(gosh, I want so desperately to move back — just the thought of all those wonderful bakeries!)

  14. Go with your gut feeling…. And bargain him down… He was probably going to toss it,

  15. Bring Yann with you and have him be the bad cop… Telling you jot to buy it 😉

  16. Good luck on Monday.

You have a ceiling that’s more than 3m x 3m, right? BUY THE MURAL, then figure out later what to do with it!!! Re money, you can’t take it with you.

  23. Absolutely purchase it. Inspiration will hit or you can always sell it.

  24. désolée for the end of the bakery…. so sad; I would be devastated if ‘my’ bakery were to close down!
