French Market

Have you ever been to a French Market on a Saturday morning?

If not grab your basket and follow me.

Vegetables

Roasted peppers with garlic.

A summer favorite.

Also Ratatouille!

 Basil

Vegetables,

fruit,

a ton of cheese,

wine,

olive oils, spices, fresh herbs…

Pesto or in French Pistou:

Basil

Olive oil

Roasted pine nuts

Parmesan

Garlic.

French market flowers

One thing that cannot be missed are the flowers.

Overwhelming array of beauty.

French Market oil clothes

France has the very best collection of oil clothes.

Most French families use a table cloth or place mats,

rarely, but honestly never, would they set the table without one.

French Market Colorful pottery

The French market reminds me

that the French meal is more than just eating,

 the table is an altar.

French market chalk board

At the French market and at the grocery store,

fresh food is labelled where it is coming from.

Buy locally and in season is best.

In the south, Provence summer is the land of plenty.

French Market Outdoor cafe table

Going to the market means a stop at the cafe.

In the south Pastis is a must.

Sunflower

Happy Saturday Feast!

I hope you enjoy the colors of summer.

At the French market it is a feast for the senses.

What is in your basket today?

I still remember (in a Proustian way!) from childhood the smell of the oil cloth on my maternal grandmother’s table. Does French oil cloth smell the same as American?

How I would love the French market.
In my basket today was celery root, oranges, cherries, potatoes, tomatoes, and zucchini. Guests coming for brunch soon and I will make a veggie stirfry, then for dessert will be fresh berries with chilled coconut cream.

I wish we had similar labeling here that indicated the origin of produce at the market. Helps to know what you are eating.

  6. Yesterday? Cherries and apricots—-they have been amazing this season. The market in Uzes was beautiful!

I just LOVE French markets. They are my favorites. All the wonderful scents of garlic, air-dried sausage and ham, lavender etc. and the variety of food are extremely inspiring. It’s a treat for all senses.

  9. Hi Corey. I was wondering which are your favourite markets in Paris: food and Flea?

  10. I love to go to the market every Saturday morning. This Saturday I had in my basket: peppers, tomatoes, strawberries, radishes, yellow beans, basil, carrots, …

I was in the market in Uzes yesterday too, Cindy! Only it was much too too crowded for me, I had to leave! You must arrive at the crack of dawn! I prefer the Wednesday one much more. Ended up meeting friends (who live in the center of Uzes) at the Vieux cafe for drinks and commiseration…. Who was it that said “no one goes there anymore, it’s too crowded” ? I kept thinking about that with a smile…..
