Saint Francis and the Sow

  Saint Francis and the sow

 A poem.

Saint Francis and the Sow

BY GALWAY KINNELL

The bud

stands for all things,

even for those things that don’t flower,

for everything flowers, from within, of self-blessing;

though sometimes it is necessary

to reteach a thing its loveliness,

to put a hand on its brow

of the flower

and retell it in words and in touch

it is lovely

until it flowers again from within, of self-blessing;
as Saint Francis

put his hand on the creased forehead

of the sow, and told her in words and in touch

blessings of earth on the sow, and the sow

began remembering all down her thick length,

from the earthen snout all the way

through the fodder and slops to the spiritual curl of the tail,

from the hard spininess spiked out from the spine

down through the great broken heart

to the sheer blue milken dreaminess spurting and shuddering

from the fourteen teats into the fourteen mouths sucking and blowing beneath them:

the long, perfect loveliness of sow.

Evening rose

Note: A friend who is going through a painful divorce found remembrance for her perfect loveliness in this poem. It reminded her of what would heal a broken heart. She sent it to me, and I instantly read every line with her in mind: A Perfect Loveliness.

  1. This is beautiful….to you friend-peace and love and hope and strength– she shall remain with me in thought and prayer-in the quiet of my heart where I wish for healing and love!

  2. It is hard to find ourselves after a relationship ends. Grief takes hold and we forget to breathe. It is with the help of others that we take one breath at a time, one step at a time and one day at a time, and eventually hope takes over and breathing becomes automatic. Until then your friends near and far are taking breaths with you until you can breathe on your own again.

  3. I think we all have days when we need this blessing. I’m glad your friend has you, Corey, to sit with her during this difficult time.

  4. A beautiful poem and hugs and blessings for your friend.

  5. So lovely. After a few heart wrenching endings of my own…I cry for others going through it. Sometimes the only thing one can do is walk through it…just put one foot in front of the other and keep moving. I loved the poem. Thank you and your dear friend for sharing.

  6. Beautiful. Beautiful. Thank you for sharing it.

  10. When you visualize someone special in your mind it is beautiful. Thanks! Your friend will gain much beauty in her soul once she walks through the fire and comes out the other side. I wish her well, she is on her way.

    Thank you. Just had a disappointing morning, with flight cancelled due to health and weekend plans out the window. Feeling lousy. This was soothing.
