On The Bridge of Avignon

Dancing-Bridge-Avignon

On the Bridge of Avignon (Sur le pont d'Avignon) is a traditional French song about a  bridge that originally spanned the Rhône River between Avignon and Villeneuve-lìs-Avignon. The bridge was built beween 1171 and 1185. The song dates from the 15th century.

French Husband took this photo of Chelsea and I dancing on the bridge of Avignon, when Chelsea was three months old.

"Sur le pont d'Avignon,
L'on y danse, l'on y danse.
Sur le pont d'Avignon,
L'on y danse tout en rond."

  1. I was on that bridge last April! Time does fly. I didn’t actually dance, but my toe was tapping. Does that count? 🙂

Besides going home to visit mama, dancing with a daughter, does life get any better?

  3. I learned that song in Junior High French class and still remember all the words…..

  4. I remember “Sur le pont d’Avignon” from a basic French course on KQED-9 back when it was educational TV (long before PBS), when I was a kid.

  5. Where has the time gone? I would give anything to hold & kiss my sweet daughter in my arms like that again . . .

  6. A beautiful moment captured!

  7. My daughter had a dance for me when she visited.
Those who have read Les Lettres de Mon Moulin by Alphonse Daudet (Short stories and well worth the effort), will know that the people danced on the bridge because the streets were so narrow. Are they still narrow today?
