Popcorn Balls

We made them.

My mom does during: Halloween and Christmas, and has as long as I can remember.

Hers are the best.

Not too sugary, not soggy, perfect crunch.

My mom spends time with the details: Only butter, warm the bowl, take out the unpopped kernels that she calls, "Dead Heads", and make them no larger than two handful.

Where is a photo of the finished product?

If you had a choice of taking a photo of a popcorn ball or eating one what would you do?

  1. I enjoy your stories of your mother. Her routines, her habits. What a lovely, steady joy she must be to so many. I am glad you are together.

  2. Ah do you even have to ask….I WOULD EAT IT!!

  3. A woman in our neighborhood, Mrs. Barnes, used to make wonderful popcorn balls, too, as well as candied apples. I can still remember the whisper passing back and forth from trick-or-treaters alerting us as to what was waiting at her house each year. We’d all try to make it there before she ran out.

  4. Oh, I want one!
We too had a woman in our neighborhood who used to hand out popcorn balls on Halloween. Those were the days. When parents never needed to question what was was put in their children’s trick-or-treat bags.

  7. Memories! Thank you for sharing. I need to dig out my mom and grandmother’s recipe – popcorn balls were always a Christmas tradition at our house.

I still remember which house it was in my childhood neighborhood where we’d always get homemade popcorn balls: a must stop on the trick-or-treating route. Ah for the innocent days before nasty things were rumored to be put into Halloween treats…
(Around the time of the razors-in-candy scare, I was a young single woman expecting no trick or treaters whatsoever. I was making myself some caramel apples on sticks when the doorbell rang, and there was a darling little girl and her daddy. I spent a bunch of time sputtering to him that I only had the caramel apples but he didn’t have to take one. He was amenable and the little girl was delighted.)

  9. I’d rather have my air-popped popcorn served piping hot with melted butter and a dusting of salt stirred in, as Nature intended 😉
