On Top of the Table You Gotta be Kidding

On top of the table

at the brocante

two dogs,

not one,

but two dogs sat on top of boxes of old postcards.

The brocante dealer tried to reassure me,

"They're not mean, just playful."

"Lucky for me," I tried to smile, "I do not need anymore postcards."

Brocante with dogs. Is someone, somewhere trying to tell me something?

What would I have done if those little critters were hopping about on a brocante table that had everything I ever had hoped to find?

Good question, and so happy I did not have to confront that issue.

Dog gone it!

  1. Maybe the universe is trying to tell you who may be your next best friend.

  2. I thought they were a couple of weird looking wigs!

  3. Rebecca from the pacific northwest (with 2 dogs)

You and dogs. I forget, did you have some bad experience with dogs? (I know why I had a bad attitude about cats as a child: our family cat charged across the front lawn and launched himself onto my skinny little leg, clamping on with all claws and teeth as well. It took a cat-loving boyfriend many years later to teach me how to play with cats and that they aren’t all like the one that attacked me.)
Are there two dogs in the photos BTW?
I’m with MarDOG. Maybe the universe is trying to tell you something… or at least soften you up a little.
Because what WOULD you do if there was a nice, non-alarming dog at a brocante table where things were calling your name so loud, oh so clearly. “Corey! Dear Corey! Here I am, the Thing you’ve longed for always. And I’m half price! Woof.”

  4. love the play with words…

  5. Corey, I think you should get a cute little dog, purse size. If you want affection 24/7 dogs are wonderful. You can take her with you to a restaurant or to the brocante. Cute dogs can be a good negotiating tool.

  6. Get a dog. We are losing our elderly sweetest Charley … a spunky smallish rescue with a huge persona … he had been abandoned in an apartment when his previous people moved … would not have traded a minute of our time together. Corey, you are missing a wonderful dimension in life, though yours is very happily quite full, I know. Maybe it is time …

  7. It does all sound like some secret plot by the canine world! I knew a stubborn old lady who would take her toy dog with her to the store and put it in the shopping trolley-on top of her boxed purchases. Another shopper complained about it and she told them “my dog is a lot cleaner than you probably are”. The old lady was very proud of her comment and told everyone about it. I love dogs but putting them on top of food purchases or items at a brocante is just not right.

  8. Merry, sorry to hear about Charley. Rescue dogs do have huge personas. Maybe it is because they realize they now have a loving home and want to tell everyone how special they are.

  9. Perhaps someday (maybe sooner than expected) you might decide they are not quite so frightening as they have been for you in the past. I do feel for you as I am afraid of heights (although not of flying) and it does not have to be explained. It just IS. Do remember though that Dog is God spelled backwards. Maybe you should be hedging your bets.

  10. Corey, both of those dogs together don’t even make one regular dog lol.

  11. Fear is not pleasant. But I can’t imagine my life without dogs in it. They are always happy to see me, and they get such joy out of simple things like fetching a tennis ball over and over in the pond or pool, playing with other dogs and kids and because of them I get daily exercise. Now cats….

Maybe I should listen, cause what is it going to say next?

  13. Tongue in Cheek

    I wish.

  14. Tongue in Cheek

No I have never said. I was never bitten or anything, just scared at their reaction.
There were two dogs, but the photos show one.
They were moving so fast I could hardly take a decent photo, plus I was scared they would jump on me.
I AM not getting a dog, no matter if they threw in the entire antique mall… really?

  15. Tongue in Cheek

    🙂 Thanks

  16. Tongue in Cheek

A dog for negotiating no bad. Maybe a wind up one.

  17. Tongue in Cheek

Hi Merry, I am sorry to hear about Charley. A friend is a friend, and losing one is terribly sad.

  18. Tongue in Cheek

Boy coming from you Martina says alot. I know your love for dogs, “Kipper”… I thought the same thing when I saw those dogs running and sitting on the postcards. But then again I dig in dusty attics so I have no right saying it. Though you do, you know!

  19. Tongue in Cheek

    I hope.

  20. Tongue in Cheek

    lol

  21. Tongue in Cheek

    🙂

  22. Maybe they were there just in case you thought you needed just one more postcard!! The brocant bug watchdogs.

  23. Corey, looks to me like the Universe is laying the groundwork… I predict that within the next year or so, you will have a new furry four footed companion. 😉

  24. You are wise to not even consider getting a companion animal. Your lifestyle precludes having the time for one. You spend a lot of time away from home and want the luxury of being able to travel as you please and that is a very thoughtful reason to not bring a pet into your home. I would be very unhappy without a dog or two but my husband and I are at the stage in our lives when we want to be home. I say both lifestyles are wonderful but should be deemed fair to all parties involved. If you decide you want to address your fear of dogs I am sure they have therapy dogs in France who are specially trained to be quiet and gentle and supportive. You can look into that. Best wishes.

  25. That is pretty ironic that they were guarding the post card stash.

  26. I am so sorry to read about your sweetest Charley….never goodbye just till we meet again-how lucky for both of you the rescue and the rescuer-peace love and strength.

  27. beautiful thoughts…BIG PERSONAS–LOVE!

I agree with Nancy. Having an animal companion of any sort, and caring for it properly, takes a huge commitment. Many people do not understand this. They’re the ones who refer to the animals as “pets”. They are actual part of your tribe/family/pack and need to be treated as such … with respect, love and compassion.

  29. Thank you, G … 3 days now and I am still raw and teary, but you are right … I’m very grateful …

  30. Thank you, Kipper … he knew … he’s gone now and hugely missed …
