What to do in Paris when it Rains?

Flowers in Paris

Walking around Paris in the late afternoon. Rain glistens the streets, my shoes are soaked, I am happy to have an umbrella. The budding trees blossoms overhead are like spring banners sprinkle confetti and wave cheerfully, they do not mind the rain.

What to do in Paris when it rains? Enjoy it! Museums offer refuge, cafes do the same, take a swim in one of the many indoor swimming pools, stand in a beautiful doorway, people watch, go buy flowers, take a cooking class or if you are really searching for fun, do a Kelly sing in the rain!

I imagine living in the building I walked by. I imagine the beautiful objects, the dining room, the evening atmosphere, the conversations, a Parisian lifestyle. A movie rolls in my head, I hear music, the scene, the glasses clinking… Then a high heeled lady walks by with her little dog in tow… Paris is a living 3D set.

Oh Paris

anytime.

Walking in the rain I hum,

"La vie est belle"

And count my lucky stars that I see it this way.

You are here, your comments roll in my mind: Must find flowers, store fronts, children playing in the garden… in the rain it is a bit tricky.

A favorite antique shop nearby, actually all the photos taken today on my blog are within ten minutes of our apartment is. It might not be a tourist area of Paris, though it is a beautiful authentic and delightful.

What I love about the 14th in Paris, especially where we are located there are very few brand name shops. Most of the shops are independently owned, one of a kind, friendly, creative, original and different.

It reminds me of how Paris use to be when I first arrived 27 years ago.

A child walks home alongside of his mother who is pushing a stroller. She is reciting a poem he needs to learn, he repeats the verses between bites of his pain au chocolat. The child carries a guitar on his back.

Rain does not stop the daily lives in Paris.

Monday I had the great pleasure of going to the hardware store with Chelsea to help figure out and carry a closet home. Well a pair of closet racks is more the word. I didn't need to go for a walk or do the killer squats, because carrying the closet racks through the metro and then up four flights of stairs equalled five miles.

Sunday, we visited the Picasso Museum. After a few hours going through the museum Chelsea and I went to the terrace on top of the museum, we waited for French Husband who was still at the beginning of the museum. To say he decided to live with Picasso is to say he moved one inch at a time.

How long can you stay in a museum?

Later he met us for a drink, or should I say dinner?

(Debra: Wanted to see artists painting in "plein air" I will get to that, but in the meantime here is one of Picasso's painting tools on a chair from the Picasso Museum.)

  1. Like you, I like to look at the architecture and imagine the rooms inside and what it is like to live there. You have some beautiful windows in these photos! Thank you!

  2. How about a picture of a cute little Frenchie? I know you must have seen one somewhere on the street. The Parisians do love their dogs.

  3. Corey, I am so enjoying all your in Paris photos – a wonderful “walk around the 14th” with you is a gift! One day I know you will find that well put out older lady…70-90.. who is out gathering her food at the fresh market, or her daily bread. I see that part of living in the city to be a wonderful part of the life of one, like me…big smile.

I would like to see front doors of Catholic Churches.

  5. Love that you are injecting a bit of Spring with your blooming trees; our Spring has not yet sprung. I was remembering past posts about how you grow grass for Easter; are you doing that this year?
My favorite of today’s photos is the last one with the statue–love the color of the patina in front of the typical Paris architecture. Thank you, Corey!

Since my son’s leg is now set in a full cast, a snap of a boy with a leg cast on public transport in crutches or wheelchair should amuse him. This reflects what is going on his life just below the Alps, where an inconsiderate snowboarder knocked him over while skiing. PS You can chose right or left leg for photo challenge!

  7. I love all of the photos but especially the store fronts. Thank you.

  8. Beautiful! I love that hot pink building! Really any visuals you capture are appreciated and magical! I love that you don’t have the many “name brand” stores..ugh on the homogenous – it’s disturbing..hooray for the unique, original, individual small shops! I also love walking in the rain, but we very rarely get rain, so sad. Oh, I can spend hours & hours in museums, especially art museums (it was my major)..and, Matisse, my favorite, I could stare at forever.😍 thanks for views Corey!

  9. I loving what others have asked for, but when I was reading this post I kept thinking why am I not seeing Chelsea and Corey preparing for their big walk/run together in Paris. I would be sitting on the roof top terrace waiting for husband too. I love Picasso, but I look most quickly and just stop at a few that catch my eye. My husband reads everything.

This is so satisfying. “beautiful authentic and delightful” is exactly what I want; the fact that it’s all in your neighborhood is even better.

  11. More food, s’il vous plaît!

  12. Yes, au plain air, I will second that! Montmartre perhaps! Yes! Thanks

  13. Hi Corey. Are there any year around Christmas Shops in Paris?

  14. Chico Sue

Flower stalls please? My husband’s favorites!

  15. Thank you, Corey! I loved window shopping with you as well!

I would love to see a photograph of my favorite place to stay in Paris, a little boutique hotel in the Marais, Caron de Beaumarchais, 12 rue Vieille du Temple, just off the rue de Rivoli. Ask the owner, M. Alain Bigeard, to tell you about all the gorgeous antiques (think brocante!) that he has acquired to place in the hotel including the individual rooms. He’s a very charming gentleman and once gave me 2 sets of draperies from the hotel. I suspect that he might give you a tour.

  17. Love the photos, Corey. My request is out of season, I believe, but I would love to see a photo of a puppet theatre in action, maybe with French children enjoying the show? Maybe this summer?

  18. Leslie in Oregon

Merci beaucoup, Corey…absolutely wonderful rendition of muguet de bois! Today is my birthday, and I thank you for this beautiful gift. Fondly, Leslie

  19. Hi Corey, I like you like to take and see photos of the natural world, trees, flowers, skies,
and art and architecture, and family and family life, and the exterior and interior of homes
and gardens and beautifully prepared meals and …well, really photographs of everything!!
But in Paris , and because I am 62 and love fashion…that is what I want to see.
Fashion in everyday living. Clothes worn out to lunch and dinner, to the museum, to the park, at home,…..I know you cannot photograph others living their personal lives…but what about in the storefront windows, mannikins.(sp)..and the displays in shops? I would love that!
Thank you for asking! And thank you again for being so good to your readers. Ps how do you keep your camera and or.i phone dry in the rain?

  20. Hello Cory,
I love the doors of Paris and especially would love to see the Museum Rodin once again…a very favorite of mine !!!you are a real treasure and make me smile every day….even going through my beautiful daughter’s cancer treatments since June-you have been there to make my day a bit brighter…Merci

  21. Texas Francophile

Oh Corey you are so generous. I would love to see Parisians and their dogs. (Sorry I know you’re afraid of dogs) I’m fascinated by their presence in restaurants, etc.
    thank you. Barbara in Texas

  22. I hate when it is raining and above all when it is cold . it started to rain again here , but lucky me the weather is hot

  23. Terri in Texas

Love the beautiful flowering trees with the beautiful buildings in the background. More street scenes please. Wish I was there!

  24. Wonderful photos of Paris in the rain — I too love that you have the indie businesses in your area, not the chain stores. I love your story of the boy, his mother, and the poem; you captured just a snippet of everyday life.
P.S. I believe the boy might be carrying a cello rather than a guitar and they are returning home after his lesson. Thank you for the photographic stories along with your words.

  25. these are absolutely gorgeous, Corey! When back in Paris, I’d love for you to snap photos of people meeting up, if you manage to see it happen. There’s something so special about the joy on a person’s face when they meet up with a friend, family, or a love!
