The Way of the Heart

The Way of the Heart

Last October I mentioned to my brother Zane that if I had a daughter who was a teen, who adored her cousins as sisters, and who LOVED One Direction as they do … Well I said as a cheerleader, "How often does a boy band come along the rocks the teen world for five straight years and during the same time you have a teen-aged daughter and nieces? You should buy tickets and be the Hero Dad/Uncle."

And he did.

He bought enough tickets for all the nieces plus me! In the end our niece Marie had already a ticket so she went with a friend. Chelsea could not come, as she is coming in October for my mother's birthday. So my brother Zane gave the extra ticket to our brother Mat (with one T).

We left for the concert around noon, drove three and a half hours to One Direction's Concert the music blasting in the car. My nieces had barely slept the night before, the excitement was so great. I woke up three times as I had dreams I misplaced the tickets.

The Way of the Heart

Overheard:

"I have waited for this my whole life."

"What will I have to look forward tomorrow?"

"I have butterflies in my stomach."

"This is the best day ever."

"I am one in a million fans, and yet I feel special."

What I saw:

Forty-nine thousand girls with beautifully coiffed long hair, smiles a thousand miles long, giddiness galore and maybe one thousand guys, their bathroom line was non-exist.

The band was easy going, likeable, young, delightful and aware of their fans and gratefully humble.

I admired them.

I was in a love feast, a wave of unbelievable energy.

At the end as we walked back to the car and listened to One Direction's music until the girls were fast asleep, my brother Zane said, "I would go again." Now that is music to the heart.

Corey watch out! Next year they will want to go early and stalk. Last summer I spent two days in Chicago hanging around the One Direction hotel with throngs of girls waiting to catch a glimpse. They never saw the boys, but did recognize the stylist, other entourage members, and some of the boys’ family.
It was great fun. I had drinks and snacks with other parents, most of us from other states. The girls were thrilled to just be near these boys. At first I was perplexed at this “waste of time” but there is a long history young girls following boy singers, remember the Beatles and Elvis. I wish I had done something like this at their age.

  4. A joyful experience for all of you! Years ago I went to a Spice Girl concert with my nieces, then in 4th and 5th grades. (They are 20-somethings now.) I was in Kansas City visiting them with my five year old son between moves. They had purchased tickets for their family to attend. My brother-in-law, oh so generously, gave up his ticket to me. My sister and I attended with the girls while the boys did something else. What fun! I’d never even heard of the Spice Girls. But being in a sea of young girls, standing on their chairs, singing, smiling, waving signs is a fond memory. Thanks for jogging my memory, Corey!

  5. It sounds like a wonderful night ….long remembered and to be cherished by EVERYONE! There is nothing like a band – no matter the age of the audience- that is grateful to the fans who put them there – so wonderful!!
